INTRODUCTION. Magnesium is the second most common intracellular cation, is a cofactor for more than 300 enzymes, affects the functional state of the cardiovascular system through various mechanisms, in particular, through the action on the smooth muscle cells of the vessels, modulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, regulation of sodium and calcium homeostasis. Therefore, maintaining a normal level of magnesium in the blood is an urgent task, and the consumption of drinking water enriched with magnesium can be considered as a method of correcting an insufficient intake of exogenous magnesium.THE AIM. The purpose of the study was determined – to evaluate the effect of drinking water with different contents of magnesium ions and a complex of magnesium with calcium on the state of the cardiovascular system of rats with genetically determined arterial hypertension. MATERIALS AND METHODS. From 6–7 weeks of age, male SHR rats received drinking water of various compositions for two months: in the first group (hCа+Mg) – with increased content of calcium and magnesium (120 mg/l Ca2+ and 45 mg/l Mg2+), the second (nCа+Mg) – drinking water normalized by mineral composition (60 mg/l Ca2+ and 25 mg/l Mg2+), in the third (hMg) – enriched Mg2+ (45 mg/l), the fourth (control) control group – St. Petersburg tap water with a low mineral content (8 mg/l Ca2+ and 3 mg/l Mg2+). WKY rats were divided into 2 groups: one group (hMg) received water enriched with Mg2+ (45 mg/l), the control WKY (control) group received water with a low mineral content (8 mg/l Ca2+ and 3 mg/l Mg2+). After 2 months, the blood pressure of rats on the tail was measured by the cuff method, the level of urea, cholesterol, total calcium, and albumin in the blood serum was analyzed, left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and myocardial mass index (MMI) were calculated. The spontaneous contractile activity of the portal vein (PV) was recorded by myography (in vitro) in isometric mode. The following were analyzed: frequency, total and maximum amplitude of phase-tonic contractions, the area under the contraction curve in 1 min, which characterizes the work performed by the vein. %). RESULTS. Enrichment of drinking water with Ca2+ and Mg2+ had a more pronounced antihypertensive effect in SHR rats compared with the hMg2+ group. In WKY rats, magnesium enrichment of water did not affect blood pressure. Modification of the mineral composition of drinking water did not affect MMI and LVMI in both SHR and WKY rats. Interlinear differences were found in the contractile activity of PV in control rats (the amplitude of PV contractions in SHR rats was greater than WKY. Consumption of water enriched with minerals decreased the amplitude of PV contractions, the largest decrease was in the hMg2+ group (in SHR, 2.6 times, in WKY, 1.5 times as compared to the control of the corresponding line). The value of the work performed by the PV in the control SHR rats was greater than in the control rats of the WKY line, and the enrichment of water with magnesium caused a decrease in the work performed by the PV only in rats SHR lines (by 55.6 %), but not for WKY. CONCLUSIONS. In rats, the consumption of drinking water enriched only with magnesium has an antihypertensive effect; however, it suppresses the spontaneous contractile activity of PV. It is advisable to use a complex of magnesium with calcium, which lowers blood pressure, but maintains an adequate level of contractile activity of the PV.

Background: Access to potable water has become a difficult task in many countries of the world including Nigeria. In Nigeria, the government is trying her best to make water supply available to the masses but till now this vision has never been accomplished. If those living in urban areas could not have access to portable water supply by the government, what is the fate of the people living in rural areas? This has led to increased usage of sachet and bottled water as portable drinking water. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the quality of sachet and bottled water produced and/or sold in Ogbomoso metropolis, Nigeria. Place and Duration of Study: This research was carried out in Ogbomoso and Ibadan both in Oyo State Nigeria between November 2018 and February, 2019. Methodology: Twenty sachet and five bottled drinking water brands; making a total of 25 brands from different manufacturers were used for this study. They were purchased randomly from local markets, shops and street vendors within Ogbomoso metropolis. They were clearly marked for easy identification, and transported to the Quality Assurance Laboratory of Water Corporation, Eleyele, Ibadan for immediate analysis. The samples were examined physically and information on the packages were recorded. Each product was carefully opened to avoid contamination. The physical, chemical and bacteriological qualities as well as the mineral composition of all samples were analyzed using standard methods and results were compared with the recommended WHO/NIS guidelines for quality water. Results: Physical examination indicated that all the sampled water were registered with NAFDAC but 50% of the sachet water had no manufacturing and expiry dates. The results of physical, chemical and bacteriological qualities as well as the mineral composition of sachet and bottled drinking water analyzed showed that 90% of the values were within the guideline of WHO/NIS for quality water. Conclusion: Though, the average temperature values of both the sachet and bottled drinking water samples were significantly above the WHO/NIS standard, it did not have any effect on their microbiological quality properties. Total coliforms, faecal coliforms and enterococci bacteria       that principally characterize drinking water quality were not present in any of the water       samples. Generally, the results obtained in this study indicated that sachet and bottled drinking water produced and/or sold in Ogbomoso metropolis were of good quality and hygienic for consumption.


Introduction. The data presented by us is characterize priority problems in the field of drinking water supply and quality of drinking water that are relevant for many regions of Ukraine, including for Hulyaipilskyi district of the Zaporizhzhskyi region, whose population receives drinking water with deviations in some indicators from hygienic standards. Objective - to study impact of mineral composition of drinking water on the health state population in five experimental districts (Vozdvyzhenskyi, Komsomolskyi, Novozlativskyi, Uspenivskyi and Malynovskyi) of Zaporizhzhskyi region in comparison with control Hulyaipilskyi district (with the lowest levels of diseases among population). Materials and methods. Study of drinking water quality from centralized and decentralized water supply sources in Hulyaipilskyi district (102 studies in total). Indicators of general and primary morbidity among adult population in Hulyaipilskyi district were studied for the last 5-year period (280 studies in total). Indicators of general and primary morbidity among adult population in the individual hospital districts were analyzed according to the medical records (350 studies totally). Results. Deterioration of the qualitative composition of drinking water with an increased level of total mineralization during 2015–2019 was established on the territory of individual rural areas: from 1.15 to 21.82 times. A reliably high level prevalence of kidney stones and diseases of the urinary system, diseases of the circulatory system, hypertension, coronary heart disease was shown in the territory of rural districts: Komsomolskyi, Novozlatopilskyi, Uspenskyi and Malinovskyi among adult population, compared with average annual indicator in the Hulyaipilskyi rural district (p < 0.001). Conclusions. There was a tendency to increase incidence of hypertension in all rural hospital areas during 2015–2019 years. Statistically significant correlation of average strength were revealed between individual components of the mineral composition of drinking water: hardness, dry residue, total mineralization and prevalence of III, XIV classes of diseases by ICD-10 (r = 0.30, p < 0.05).

Kidney stone disease (KSD) is a complex disease. Besides the high risk of recurrence, its association with systemic disorders contributes to the burden of disease. Sufficient water intake is crucial for prevention of KSD, however, the mineral content of water might influence stone formation, bone health and cardiovascular (CVD) risk. This study aims to analyse the variations in mineral content of bottled drinking water worldwide to evaluate the differences and describes the possible impact on nephrological and urological diseases. The information regarding mineral composition (mg/L) on calcium, bicarbonate, magnesium, sodium and sulphates was read from the ingredients label on water bottles by visiting the supermarket or consulting the online shop. The bottled waters in two main supermarkets in 21 countries were included. The evaluation shows that on a global level the mineral composition of bottled drinkable water varies enormously. Median bicarbonate levels varied by factors of 12.6 and 57.3 for still and sparkling water, respectively. Median calcium levels varied by factors of 18.7 and 7.4 for still and sparkling water, respectively. As the mineral content of bottled drinking water varies enormously worldwide and mineral intake through water might influence stone formation, bone health and CVD risk, urologists and nephrologists should counsel their patients on an individual level regarding water intake.

Objective. Hygienic assessment of the quality of drinking water from two rivers, Kama and Chusovaya, which supply the city of Perm, was carried out. Water in them is different in mineral composition, but similar in terms of anthropogenic pollution. Materials and methods. Dental status was determined in 142 schoolchildren aged 15-17 years old, who use water from different sources. The concentration of total calcium and magnesium in the oral fluid was determined for all schoolchildren. Results. The study found that the degree of mineralization of drinking water affects the mineral composition of the saliva. Schoolchildren, who use drinking water of low mineralization, have a low concentration of calcium and magnesium in the saliva and a high intensity of dental caries. Schoolchildren, who use drinking water of increased mineralization, have a high concentration of calcium and magnesium in the saliva, a low intensity of dental caries and a high intensity of periodontal diseases due to an increased formation of tartar. Treatment and preventive measures, carried out among schoolchildren, included the drug Complivit, plates CM 1, low-intensity laser light. Conclusions. The effectiveness of treatment and preventive measures was determined by the activity of the oral fluid enzymes before and after the course of treatment.
