This article deals with a critical perspective on modern schooling based on my own experience as a child and young adult. I illustrate the effects of what I call a pedagogic of detachment and argue for a decolonial option of the modern school system. I will start with my personal history as a minority pupil in Argentina and will also use cases from my experiences as an immigrant in the Norwegian school system and from my ethnographic work among the Mbya-Guaraní in Northern Argentina.

The traditional use of medicinal plants for treatment of infectious diseases by an indigenous Mbyá-Guarani tribe from South Brazil was assessed by evaluating the antibiotic and antibiofilm activities against relevant bacterial pathogens. Aqueous extracts from 10 medicinal plants were prepared according to indigenous Mbyá-Guarani traditional uses. To evaluate antibiotic (OD600) and antibiofilm (crystal violet method) activities, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 35984 and seven multi-drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing bacterial clinical isolates were challenged with the extracts. Furthermore, the susceptibility profile of KPC-producing bacteria and the ability of these isolates to form biofilm were evaluated. The plants Campomanesia xanthocarpa, Maytenus ilicifolia, Bidens pilosa and Verbena sp. showed the best activity against bacterial growth and biofilm formation. The majority of KPC-producing isolates, which showed strong ability to form biofilm and a multidrug resistance profile, was inhibited by more than 50% by some extracts. The Enterobacter cloacae (KPC 05) clinical isolate was the only one resistant to all extracts. This study confirms the importance of indigenous traditional medicinal knowledge and describes for the first time the ability of these plants to inhibit biofilm formation and/or bacterial growth of multi-drug resistant KPC-producing isolates.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the social representations of health care of the Mbyá-Guarani ethnic group by multidisciplinary teams from the Special Indigenous Health District in the south coast of Rio Grande do Sul state (Distrito Sanitário Especial Indígena Litoral Sul do Rio Grande do Sul), Brazil. Method: a qualitative method based on the theory of social representations was used. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews with 20 health workers and by participant observation. The interviews were analyzed with ALCESTE software, which conducts a lexical content analysis using quantitative techniques for the treatment of textual data. Results: there were disagreements in the health care concepts and practices between traditional medicine and biomedicine; however, some progress has been achieved in the area of intermedicality. The ethnic boundaries established between health workers and indigenous peoples based on their representations of culture and family, together with the lack of infrastructure and organization of health actions, are perceived as factors that hinder health care in an intercultural context. Conclusion: a new basis for the process of indigenous health care needs to be established by understanding the needs identified and by agreement among individuals, groups, and health professionals via intercultural exchange.

Résumé Cet article présente une recherche-action réalisée depuis l’année 2000 au sein de l’ethnie mbya-guarani de Rio Grande do Sul, au Brésil. Cette recherche cherche à collaborer avec les programmes développés actuellement pour intervenir sur la consommation excessive de boissons alcooliques et sur ses conséquences, notamment en ce qui concerne l’identification du sujet d’intervention. Traditionnellement, la substance « alcool » était le sujet principal dans la conception des programmes, alors que l’on cherchait à diminuer son accessibilité et sa consommation. Dans ce projet, une perspective ethnographique émique a été adoptée, ce qui a permis d’identifier les modèles explicatifs de la consommation de boissons chez les autochtones guaranis. Un aspect fondamental réside dans la compréhension de la notion de personne et du système médical traditionnel, où la notion d’ « esprit », binaire dans ce cas, a permis de comprendre l’association de l’esprit de l’alcool qui se marie avec l’esprit de nature tellurique de celui qui boit. Dans un sens plus large, l’interprétation sociale explique que les communautés n’ayant pas de maison de guérison (Opy) sont les plus vulnérables, car elles n’ont pas de lien avec le dieu créateur (Ñanderu) qui protège les individus contre les risques de devenir malades ou alcooliques. Face au manque de services de santé adéquats pour prévenir et pour traiter le problème de l’alcoolisme, un réseau de guérisseurs et d’assistants a été développé. Ces personnes agissent dans toutes les communautés et, jusqu’à présent, elles ont réussi à réduire la consommation de boissons par la restitution de l’esprit divin et des réunions communautaires.

O presente estudo procura analisar sob as ópticas histórica e antropológica, a maneira como as lideranças religiosas Mbyá Guarani da região amazônica paraense, cumprem os sonhos recebidos de Nhanderú Ete, iniciando a caminhada em direção a terra sem mal, a Yvy Marãe‟y; assim retornam ao local de ocupação antiga ou a indicada por Nhanderú, terra com a qual mantém laços históricos de luta. Portanto, pesquisa versa sobre o modo como "escolhem”, “adotam,” “retomam,” ressignificam, reterritorializam, guaranizam a terra onde pausaram a caminhada.

Este artículo documenta el modo en que se ha aludido a la infancia indígena en las fuentes etnográficas argentinas. Con ese fin, se presenta un estado general sobre las etnografías que directa e indirectamente refieren a niños y niñas mbyà-guaraní de Misiones y tobas/qom del Gran Chaco y Buenos Aires. Gracias al análisis de dichos trabajos, se revisa cuál es el rol que ocupan los niños, cómo son presentados y qué espacio se destina a plasmar sus voces como interlocutoras del investigador/a-etnógrafo/a.
