This paper presents a second-order discrete-time Sigma-Delta (SD) Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) with over 80 dB Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), which is applied in a signal conditioning IC for automotive piezo-resistive pressure sensors. To reduce the flicker noise of the structure, choppers are used in every stage of the high gain amplifiers. Besides, to reduce the required area and power, only the CIC filter structure is adopted as a decimation filter. This filter has a configurable structure that can be applied to different data rates and input signal bandwidths. The proposed ADC was fabricated and measured in a 0.18-µm CMOS process. Due to the application of only a CIC filter, the total active area of the SD-ADC and reference generator is 0.49 mm2 where the area of the decimation filter is only 0.075 mm2. For the input signal bandwidth of 1.22 kHz, it achieved over 80 dB SNR in a 2.5 MHz sampling frequency while consuming 646 µW power.

This paper describes the application of filter sharpening method to the modified comb filter (MCF) in the case of decimation factor, which is product of two or more positive integers. It is shown that in the case of multistage decimation with MCF, filters in each stage are also MCF. Applying the sharpening to the decimation filter in the last stage provides very good results, with savings in the number of operations comparing to the case of sharpening of the complete filter. Direct-form FIR polyphase filter structure is proposed for the filters in each stage.

This paper presents a research on design of multiplierless comb compensators with magnitude response synthesized as sinewave functions. First, it is elaborated the importance of comb decimation filter and why we need its compensator. In continuation are presented some favorable characteristics of comb compensator. The compensators, with magnitude characteristic synthesized as sinewave functions fulfill those favorable characteristics. Next, are described some most important results on design of compensators with sinewave-based magnitude responses including single and cascaded sinewave-based functions. In all designs are presented the overall corresponding magnitude responses and the zooms in the passband. The parameters of design generally depend only on number of cascaded combs and generally do not depend on decimation factor. Design parameters are presented in tables along with the corresponding required number of adders.
