With superior flexible manufacturing capability, selective laser melting (SLM) has attracted more and more attention in the aerospace, medical, and automotive industries. However, the poor quality of the lower surface in overhanging structures is still one of the factors that limits the wide application of SLM. In this work, the influence of process parameters and scanning strategy on the lower surface quality of SLMed TA15 (Ti-6Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V) titanium alloy parts were studied. The results showed that the laser surface energy density (EF) had a significant influence on the quality of the lower surface. Excessive EF led to obvious sinking of the molten pool and a serious slag hanging phenomenon. However, the too low EF easily contributed to the insufficient powder fusion in the lower surface area, which led to the agglomeration of a molten pool during core processing, resulting in slag hanging, pores, and powder spalling that reduced the quality of the lower surface. Moreover, the cross-remelting strategy and non-remelting strategy gained better surface quality at the low EF and high EF, respectively. In addition, it was found that the quality of the lower surface could be quickly and accurately evaluated by the cooling time of the molten pool during the processing of the lower surface. This research can increase the understanding of the forming mechanism of the lower surface and has certain guiding significance for the process optimization of the lower surface.

Since the invention of the friction stir welding, several studies have been conducted to understand the influence of process parameters on the microstructural, thermal and mechanical characteristics to improve the weld quality. Banded structures better known under the name of "onion rings" are one of phenomena that appear in the microstructure during this process. The welding parameters leading to their appearance as well as their effect on the quality of the joint are still subject to much research with different conclusions. In this context, the objective of this research work is to determine various characteristics of the ‘onion rings’ and correlate them to processing conditions.

Blanking finite element analysis model of non-metallic material PET insulation spacer was established, and the influence of process parameters on blanking quality of insulation spacer was analyzed. The results show that the qualified cross-section quality, the high dimensional accuracy and the little bending distortion of blanking workpiece can be obtained by the reasonable blanking clearance and the higher blanking speed. The corresponding experiment was carried out, the results show that the process parameters of insulation spacer blanking obtained by numerical simulation are feasible, and the qualified insulation spacer was produced by the simulation results.

The results of the research on selective laser melting process of the Inconel 718 superalloy powder under conditions of additive manufacturing of parts for special purposes are presented. The influence of process parameters on the quality of manufactured parts is shown. Process parameters which allow manufacturing parts with the density close to 100%, are determined. Also, the results of mechanical tests and investigation of microstructure are presented.

Abstract The machinability and the process parameter optimization of turning operation for 15-5 Precipitation Hardening (PH) stainless steel have been investigated based on the Taguchi based grey approach and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). An L27 orthogonal array was selected for planning the experiment. Cutting speed, depth of cut and feed rate were considered as input process parameters. Cutting force (Fz) and surface roughness (Ra) were considered as the performance measures. These performance measures were optimized for the improvement of machinability quality of product. A comparison is made between the multi-criteria decision making tools. Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) and TOPSIS are used to confirm and prove the similarity. To determine the influence of process parameters, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) is employed. The end results of experimental investigation proved that the machining performance can be enhanced effectively with the assistance of the proposed approaches.

The Carbon-Carbon (C-C) composite materials are logical candidates for the manufacture of space crafts and other advanced structures, due to their low density values. These materials are naturally expensive, and the machining cost increases the final product’s price. The literature availability on the machining, particularly with reference to drilling operation of these materials is very rare. Hence an experimental investigation has taken to study the hole quality of this ubiquitous carbon-carbon composite material. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis about the influence of process parameters on the ovality of the carbon-Carbon composite plate, which is measured with a coordinate measuring machine. The drilling experiments were carried with two different tools like HSS and TiN coated Carbide materials on a CNC drilling machine. The Point Angle, spindle speed and feed rate were chosen as process parameters, and their impact on the quality of drilled hole was analyzed with the help of Taguchi’s orthogonal array and ANOVA-TM software. A comparison was done between the performances of drilling by these two different tools.

In this research the influencing process parameters on fused deposition modelling of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) parts were studied. The two process parameters, layer thickness and model interior fill style are studied. The specimens were built, tests carried out to find out the surface roughness quality of the specimens. The results analyzed using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The result indicates that the specimen Type 1 with the 0.254mm layer thickness and solid model interior fill style is the best specimen among the types of specimens tested.
