Ever since the focus on cultural diversity and identities acquired prominence globally, there has been a shift in limiting sustainability only to environmental, economic and social dimensions. Culture is more than just the manifestation of culture, for example, ‘the arts’ and should be viewed instead as the ‘whole social order’ (Williams 1983). This naturally leads to an interrogation of the construct of sustainable development. The definition which emerged in the Brundtland Report (WCED 1987) is the widely accepted one and it states, “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

The environment provides the economy with resources (e.g., water, air, fuels, food, metals, minerals, and drugs), services (e.g., the cycles of H2O, C, CO2, N, O2; photosynthesis, and soil formation), and mechanisms to absorb waste. Economic growth is based on these three services, and since the global ecosystem does not grow, economic growth cannot continue indefinitely. The concepts of sustainability and sustainable development have received much attention among policy-makers and scientists as a result of the existence of limits to growth and the dramatic environmental changes of the last decades. Sustainability integrates environmental, economic, and societal aspects. It also covers different geographical scales: ecosystems, regions, countries, and the globe. In this chapter, the authors review various models of sustainability assessment. Since there is no universally accepted definition and measuring technique of sustainability, these different models lead to different assessments. They also present a discussion of the sustainability indicators, aggregation tools, and data imputation techniques used in each approach.

The integration of sustainable development concepts with the traditional supply chain improves the environmental performance and green image among its stakeholders. During adoption of sustainability concepts in traditional supply chain management, some hurdles can be anticipated. These hurdles are called barriers, and industries must equip themselves to remove them. The difficulties associated with removal of barriers are identification and analysis for selection significant barriers. In this chapter, the significant barriers for incorporating sustainability in supply chain of high volume manufacturing are consolidated from the literature and categorized into seven groups: people, strategic, environmental, economic, societal, regulatory, and functional. The widely used evaluation methods are interpretive structural modeling and DEMATEL for which the procedure and guidance to infer the results are detailed. The chapter is expected to support the practicing engineers involved in implementation of sustainable concepts in supply chain.

The interests focus on the tools, used in the case of evaluating the sustainability in the mobility structures. In the present is sustainable development regular part of planning in every scale. According to growing development and innovations, it was necessary to ensure a sustainable framework of progress or traffic performance. Sustainable development goals were founded as a reaction to limited natural sources and also as a response to the human impact on nature. Evolution of those goals started with the environmental base and then had also been added social and economic aspects. A study wants to find sophisticated tools for the evaluation of sustainable development in urban structures. As was located, in Europe exist methods for assessment of sustainability (EIA, SEA, LCA, EF, ER, GP, CBA, CEA, MCDA, EA, SIA, SEIA, etc.). Although even their large amount, they are mostly based on just one section of SD. Other tools which are used, are methods for evaluation sustainability (BREEAM, CASBEE-UD, GBI, LEED, IGBC, SB tool, DGNB, etc.), where are also included other sections (environmental, economic, social). Assessment tools were described and preliminary compared in the context of the factors’ coverage.

This paper reports the findings of the perceptions and attitudes towards sustainable development among Malaysian undergraduates. The study was carried out involving 154 undergraduates from five universities in Malaysia. This research was conducted based on a survey whereby the respondents were given a questionnaire to gauge their perception and attitude towards sustainable development. The output of the analyses showed that the respondents have positive perceptions and attitudes towards all sustainability dimensions—environmental, economic, and social—except for economic and social bound issues. These findings suggest that the educators who are involved in sustainable development education need to focus on economic and social bound aspects. Overall, the findings showed that the sustainable development education in higher education institutions has cultivated an appropriate sense of responsibility towards sustainability among their undergraduate students. As such, this investigation serves as a cornerstone to which the current paradigm of sustainable development education can be examined for further improvement by related stakeholders.

Bioeconomy has been proposed as a pathway to sustainable development in many countries. However, the difficulties in defining the bioeconomy boundaries at the national level might necessitate the adoption of a sectoral approach to monitor and evaluate the success of its development. In this resolution, standards, certifications and labelling (SCL) schemes for bioeconomy-related sectors might be an essential source of data. The study evaluates the potential to use SCL schemes as a source for monitoring and evaluating sustainable bioeconomy, by analysing the sustainability aspects (chain-of-custody, environmental, economic and social themes) considered in selected SCL schemes. A variety of SCL schemes for different stages of the bioeconomy value chains were subjected to analysis on whether they consider internationally agreed aspirational principles and criteria for sustainable bioeconomy. The aspects most frequently mentioned by the requirement lists of the analysed SCL schemes were identified, along with the highlights on the least-frequently mentioned sustainability topics.

Abstract Decreasing green spaces is a significant concern in today’s compact cities while they provide various dimensions of sustainability; therefore, sustainable development has become the key idea to solve a series of environmental, economic and social problems. Because urban green space can be seen from different distinct disciplinary perspectives, this study reviews theories and material based on multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches. Urban development and renewal should be accompanied by a green vision, to insert more plantable spaces into the urban environment. Therefore, sustainable urban planning, design and management are needed to improve urban greening by innovative and creative strategies.
