AbstractIn this paper, we analysed the efflorescences present in the frescos of a monumental complex named S. Pietro a Corte situated in the historic centre of Salerno (Campania, Italy). The groundwater of the historic centre is fed by two important streams (the Rafastia and the Fusandola) that can be the sources of water penetration. The aims of this work are to (i) identify the stream that reaches the ancient frigidarium of S. Pietro a Corte and (ii) characterize the efflorescences on damaged frescos in terms of chemical nature and sources. In order to accomplish the first aim, the water of the Rafastia river (7 samples) and the water of the Fusandola river (7 samples) were analysed and compared with the water of a well of the Church (7 samples). The ionic chromatography measurements on the water samples allowed us to identify the Rafastia as the river that feeds the ancient frigidarium of S. Pietro a Corte. To investigate the nature and the origin of the efflorescences (our second aim), anionic chromatography analyses, X-ray diffraction measurements, and the isotopic determination of nitrogen were performed on the efflorescences (9 samples) and the salts recovered from the well (6 samples). Results of these analyses show that efflorescences are mainly made of potassium nitrate with a δ15N value of + 9.3 ± 0.2‰. Consequently, a plausible explanation for their formation could be the permeation of sewage water on the walls of the monumental complex.

Abstract Macroporous lands sensitive to wetting represent a category of sites with high vulnerability during construction exploitation. In this regard an effective measure is the protective shielding measures against the main factors influencing its behavior. The paper deals with a complex case study by both its importance functions and the fact that the objective analyzed is a part of historical monuments of particular value to the local community, namely the water tower in Braila Public Garden - România.

On the present, the problem of renovation of historical buildings is becoming more and more actual. The role of society is to protect and renovate the historical monuments. The presented article focuses on the problem of renovation of historic buildings from a structural, technological and cost point of view. During the solution of the case study "Renovation of roof structure of the Old Town Hall in Košice", a variant solution of the historic roof renovation was designed in accordance with the principles of historical buildings renovation. Subsequently, the evaluation of the technological and cost parameters for renovation; and determination of the optimal variant for renovation of the historical roof was processed through the methods of multicriterial analysis.

During the rapid growth of the nation in the last half-century, China has experienced extreme urbanization and class polarization. As a result, historical districts and cultural centers are rapidly vanishing. To survey the question of how to conserve historical monuments in the midst of cities’ fast development that can protect the community, preserve significant memories, and promote the authenticity for future generations. This paper will examine a specific case study in Hangzhou's historical district in China that advances through historical research, field study, residential interviews, suggestions in governmental policy, and revitalization proposals. Through a one-week intensified investigation in the neighborhood under the collaboration of Zhejiang University, University of Tokyo, and University，I was honored to participate in this international academic event, “Learning from Place.” Through a series of surveying and mapping, drawing and modeling, planning and designing, and under the guidance of professors and team collaboration, we students involved in a discussion of the current city issues and organized primary solutions to the problems. The conclusion we have come to an agreement is that it is possible to achieve a compatible environment that incorporates modern facilities into historical conditions, in which harmonizes urban development and cultural conservation, and balance economic advancement and social benefit.

In August 1916 President Woodrow Wilson founded the National Park Service (NPS) as a means of preserving the United States’ wildlands, battlefields, and historical monuments. Over the last century this agency has grown exponentially, rising to 409 sites of significance as of 2014. In celebration of this achievement and in time for the National Park Service’s centennial later this year I have chosen to focus on the origin of one site in particular: Grand Teton National Park. This article thus seeks to present a case study of the park’s creation narrative as told through government documents, and to provide a starting place for researchers interested in the National Park System and/or Grand Teton National Park.

India is known for its rich, diversified and cultural properties. Assessment, evaluation and maintenance of ancient and historical monuments is a major concern today. Most of the historical structures which were built in earlier 1950s are now found unsafe if cheeked by present codes. Disintegration / deterioration due to continuous weathering processes and bitter failure examples from recent natural hazards reveal the importance of restoration / retrofitting measures. In this paper, a case study on Guntupalli Caves, one of the finest testimonials of Buddhist Heritage, located in eastern ghat region of A.P. state, India, is taken up. The important monuments located in the study area are rock cut temples, monasteries and ruined Mandapa. Rock samples of different monuments are collected and tested in the laboratory and from test results, it is observed that the compressive and bending stress values are low and found vulnerable against any further loading. A new retrofit concept “Reinforced Rock” technique is adopted by introducing steel flats / bars in tension zone of rock samples. Test results have shown that compression and bending stress values are increased by two to four times compared with the results of those obtained in rock samples without reinforcement.
