Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine healthcare professionals’ own health literacy through the lenses of information behavior and evidence-based practice. These practitioners’ health information literacy is critical to client care. Design/methodology/approach This conceptual paper applies general and professional-specific models of information behavior and issues of bias to methods in which healthcare practitioners seek, evaluate and use research information within professional practice. Findings Case examples from library, medical and the broader healthcare literature are used to explore ways in which care professionals’ information behaviors align with or deviate from information behavior models and the role of different types of bias in their information behavior. Adaption of evidence-based practice precepts, already familiar to healthcare professionals, is proposed as a method to improve practitioners’ health information literacy. Originality/value Explorations of “health literacy” have primarily focused on healthcare consumers’ interactions with basic health information and services. The health literacy (and health information literacy) of care practitioners has received much less attention. By gaining a greater understanding of how information behaviors intersect with healthcare practitioners’ own health literacy, the librarians and educators who serve future and current care professionals can offer more informed information literacy instruction, enabling practitioners to provide improved patient care.

Leeds Metropolitan University chose the theme of learner support and centred our objectives around information literacy skills. This is because of our recent work in developing an Information Literacy Framework which articulates what information literacy is and how we can integrate it into students' learning. It was developed by Learning Advisers in response to the growth in the amount and availability of information, the need for information literacy in engaging effectively in independent learning and the great diversity in the level of students' information skills.

The APPsyCI, a Portuguese research center, decided to incorporate, in all its areas of activity, a research line within Open Science articulated with information literacy (IL). The Open Science assumptions were implemented through several actions: repository management, teacher and researcher training, support for choosing the journals where to publish, dissemination, and promotion of scientific knowledge within FAIR principles. The social and academic impact of the research line provides some light on the national landscape for research innovation and broadens horizons and sheds when combining IL with Open Science. Thus, the creation of this research line within the research center shows that the association of Open Science with IL can be considered as the path and object of applied research.

Open science and research is no longer relevant just for people pursuing an academic career. Instead, it is something that all students entering the university should be increasingly familiar with as they proceed with their studies. Tampere University Library has actively integrated open science into its information literacy teaching, beginning from the first-year orientation studies and continuing throughthe Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis seminars. Following the guidelines provided by the idea of cumulative learning (Maton 2009), the IL teaching at Tampere University Library aims at connecting new knowledge with existing knowledge, effectively building on the students’ previous IL studies throughout their degree. In addition, the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy (2015) acts as a roadmap for developing IL teaching at Tampere University Library: the Library’s entire teaching team has gathered in workshops and together produced a view of the frames that best suits the University’s students. The frames are awork-in-progress, and the teaching team will continue to work on better adapting the frames. One of the results is the way in which the frames and the threshold concepts within determine the depth inwhich issues such as open science and research are taught at different levels (cf. Sipilä, Miettinen &Tevaniemi, 2019). In order to ensure student engagement, concepts like open science are presented at each level in a way that is relevant to the students’ current studies, beginning with the concept itself and later advancing towards viewing the students as both users and creators of open science. This presentation will highlight some of the current ways in which open science and research is integrated into the information literacy curriculum at Tampere University Library, and how the ACRL framework can act as a way for library teaching staff to comprehend and develop IL teaching in highereducation.

The aim of this paper is to show how information literacy can be conceptualised as a key learning process related to discipline and academic maturity, rather than as a generic skill. Results of a smallscale study including questionnaires and observation of student behaviour are reported and analysed in relation to Bruce’s ‘seven faces of information literacy’ framework. The findings illustrate that information literacy is a highly situated practice that remains undeveloped through mandatory schooling. Some methodological issues are considered in relation to researching information literacy, including the limits of the Bruce model as a framework for analysis. We also show how decontextualised courses can foreground and privilege certain behaviours that are beneficial but that developing higher-level information literate attitudes is likely to be an iterative and contextualised process.DOI: 10.1080/0968776042000339790
