Adaptation and personalization of the information and instruction offered to the users in on-line e-learning environments are considered to be the turning point of recent research efforts. Collaborative learning may contribute to adaptive and personalized asynchronous e-learning. In this chapter authors intend to introduce the Virtual co Learner (VcL) that is a system designed on a basis of distributed architecture able to imitate the behavior of a learning companion who has suitable to the user’s cognitive and learning style and behavior. To this purpose an asynchronous adaptive collaborating e-learning system is proposed in the sense of reusing digitized material which deployed before by the users of computer supported collaborating learning systems. Matching real and simulated learners who have cognitive characteristics of the same type, one can find that learning procedure becomes more efficient and productive. Aiming to establish such VcL, one faces a number of questions. An important question is related to the user’s cognitive or learning characteristics diagnosis. Other questions are examined too.

The increase of e-Learning resources such as interactive learning environments, learning management systems or intelligent tutoring systems has created huge repositories of educational data that can be explored. This increase generated the need of integrating machine learning methodologies into the currently existing e-Learning environments. The integration of such procedures focuses on working with a wide range of data analysis algorithms and their various implementations in form of tools or technologies. This paper aims to present a self-contained roadmap for practitioners who want to have basic knowledge about a core set of algorithms and who want to apply them on educational data. The background of this research domain is represented by state-of-the-art data analysis algorithms found in the areas of Machine Learning, Information Retrieval or Data Mining that are adapted to work on educational data. The main goal of the research efforts in the domain of Intelligent Data Analysis on Educational Data is to provide tools that enhance the quality of the on-line educational systems.

El propósito de este artículo es fortalecer la colaboración entre dos instituciones que buscan integrar e-learning en sus prácticas más cotidianas y en contextos donde antes no habían tenido experiencia previa. El objetivo principal es acercar a los estudiantes universitarios, en este caso a los usuarios del Banco del Tiempo (BdT) del Ayuntamiento de Terrassa, Barcelona, a las prácticas reales para que obtengan un aprendizaje más significativo,. La experiencia relata el proceso de coordinación, diseño, gestión y valoración desde el punto de vista del aprendizaje en la formación inicial de los estudiantes de grado.

With globalization, library educators should address culturally-sensitive instruction design and curriculum, particularly in online learning environments. Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and Bigg’s educational model provide frameworks for addressing cultural impact on library education. Specific techniques are suggested for handling language and online learning issues.Avec la mondialisation, les professeurs de bibliothéconomie devraient incorporer les différences culturelles dans leurs cours ainsi que dans le cursus, notamment en milieu d'apprentissage en ligne. Les dimensions culturelles de Hofstede et le modèle éducatif de Bigg offrent un cadre permettant de traiter de l'impact culturel sur l'éducation. Seront présentées différentes techniques pour aborder les questions de langue et d'apprentissage en ligne.

The development of a modern e-learning system promotes the active introduction of distance education. The organization of a mixed form of education at the department of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy involves an education during the session and using the distance contact between faculty and students during the intersessional period. The information technology system of distance learning is provided by personal computers, video and audio equipment. The web-site of the department presents a set of teaching materials, including curriculas, work programs, lecture notes, test assignments, situational tasks, control and individual course work. Distance learning is supplemented with new teaching materials: web lectures, e-learning textbooks and manuals. Lectures are delivered by faculty members in the form of video conferences or webinars. Consultations are conducted in the on-line mode each week at a certain time by the teachers of the department according to the schedule. The website of the department presents methods for implementing practical skills, video stories of individual urgent states on the pathology of internal organs, demonstrates sets of medicines for seven types of first aid kits to improve the students' knowledge and skills, and to successfully pass the practical part of the state certification of graduates from the discipline "Clinical pharmacy".

AbstractObjectives: To introduce and evaluate a computer assisted learning programme in undergraduate psychiatry (CAL-PSYCH).Methods: An interactive e-learning environment was created within the University College Dublin portal to assist students in acquiring the necessary skills in undergraduate psychiatry. The pilot phase consisted of providing their lectures on-line on the interactive site. Data were gathered from the last group of students in 2001 (pre-CAL-PSYCH) and the first group of students using CAL-PSYCH in 2002. We included assessment of percentage of students accessing the site, attendance rates at face-to-face lectures and tutorials, and also a feedback questionnaire from students who accessed the site.Results: All responders had used CAL-PSYCH. Students gave higher ratings for quality and interactivity of lectures compared with the pre-CAL-PSYCH curriculum. Students also expressed enthusiasm about CAL-PSYCH and encouraged us to develop it further.Conclusions: Computer-assisted learning environments such as CAL-PSYCH provide the opportunity to bring modern e-learning techniques to medical education, and may provide a new model for life-long learning in medicine.
