Background:: In the era of information overload it is very difficult for a human reader to make sense of the vast information available in the internet quickly. Even for a specific domain like college or university website it may be difficult for a user to browse through all the links to get the relevant answers quickly. Objective:: In this scenario, design of a chat-bot which can answer questions related to college information and compare between colleges will be very useful and novel. Methods:: In this paper a novel conversational interface chat-bot application with information retrieval and text summariza-tion skill is designed and implemented. Firstly this chat-bot has a simple dialog skill when it can understand the user query intent, it responds from the stored collection of answers. Secondly for unknown queries, this chat-bot can search the internet and then perform text summarization using advanced techniques of natural language processing (NLP) and text mining (TM). Results:: The advancement of NLP capability of information retrieval and text summarization using machine learning tech-niques of Latent Semantic Analysis(LSI), Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), Word2Vec, Global Vector (GloVe) and Tex-tRank are reviewed and compared in this paper first before implementing them for the chat-bot design. This chat-bot im-proves user experience tremendously by getting answers to specific queries concisely which takes less time than to read the entire document. Students, parents and faculty can get the answers for variety of information like admission criteria, fees, course offerings, notice board, attendance, grades, placements, faculty profile, research papers and patents etc. more effi-ciently. Conclusion:: The purpose of this paper was to follow the advancement in NLP technologies and implement them in a novel application.

The explosion of the information available on the Internet has made traditional information retrieval systems, characterized by one size fits all approaches, less effective. Indeed, users are overwhelmed by the information delivered by such systems in response to their queries, particularly when the latter are ambiguous. In order to tackle this problem, the state-of-the-art reveals that there is a growing interest towards contextual information retrieval (CIR) which relies on various sources of evidence issued from the user’s search background and environment, in order to improve the retrieval accuracy. This chapter focuses on mobile context, highlights challenges they present for IR, and gives an overview of CIR approaches applied in this environment. Then, the authors present an approach to personalize search results for mobile users by exploiting both cognitive and spatio-temporal contexts. The experimental evaluation undertaken in front of Yahoo search shows that the approach improves the quality of top search result lists and enhances search result precision.

It is generally observed throughout the world that in the last two decades, while the average speed of computers has almost doubled in a span of around eighteen months, the average speed of the network has doubled merely in a span of just eight months! Search engines are ubiquitous tools for seeking information from the Internet and, as such, have become an integral part of our information society. New search engines that combine ideas from separate search engines generally outperform the search engines from which they took ideas. Designers, however, may not be aware of the work of other search engine developers or such work may not be available in modules that can be incorporated into another search engine. This research presents an interoperability architecture for building customized search engines. Existing search engines are analyzed and decomposed into self-contained components that are classified into six categories. A prototype, called the Automated Software Development Environment for Information Retrieval, was developed to implement the interoperability architecture, and an assessment of its feasibility was carried out. The prototype resolves conflicts between components of separate search engines and demonstrates how design features across search engines can be integrated.

With increase of information sharing over the internet or intranet, we require techniques to increase the availability of shared resource over large number of users trying to access the resources at the same time. Many techniques are being proposed to make access easy and more secure in distributed environment. Information retrieval plays an important to serve the most reliant data in least waiting, this chapter discuses all such techniques for information retrieval and sharing over the cloud infrastructure. Tag clouds are tools that have been widely used on the Internet since their conception. The main applications of these textual visualizations are information retrieval, content representation and browsing of the original text from which the tags are generated. Despite the extensive use of tag clouds, their enormous popularity and the amount of research related to different aspects of them, few studies have summarized their most important features when they work as tools for information retrieval and content representation. In this paper we present a summary of the main characteristics of tag clouds found in the literature, such as their different functions, designs and negative aspects. We also present a summary of the most popular metrics used to capture the structural properties of a tag cloud generated from the query results, as well as other measures for evaluating the goodness of the tag cloud when it works as a tool for content representation. The different methods for tagging and the semantic association processes in tag clouds are also considered. Finally we give a list of alternative for visual interfaces, which makes this study a useful first help for researchers who want to study the content representation and information retrieval interfaces in greater depth.

Abstract Searching for information on the web is regarded as a complex problem-solving activity involving a range of cognitive and affective processes. Anxiety is a key affective factor. In this article, we describe the construction and initial validation stages of the Information Retrieval on the Web Anxiety Rate (IROWAR) scale. The final structure of this inventory was validated with a sample of 183 English-speaking Internet users. Reliability analyses indicated that the factors were internally consistent (Cronbach’s alpha: 0.92). When we checked divergent validity, we found negative correlations with both self-efficacy and positive attitude towards the Internet. There were no effects of either sex or age on the total IROWAR score, but the Internet search anxiety sum score decreased with the length of use. This scale will be useful in several domains, including research on the determinants of web anxiety, individuals’ experience of web anxiety and ways of supporting them and Internet learning.
