In 2013, the tuition reform was undertaken in Indonesian higher education and, in turn, has facilitated the growing enrollments of undergraduates from lower-income families. Most of them are the first in their families to go to college. The increasing presence of first-generation students at campus requires sufficient understanding and necessary support from college personnel to allow them to succeed in their degree pursuit. Hence, by using social capital as the framework, this study attempted to dismantle the experiences of persistence of first-generation Indonesian undergraduates. The participants of this study were Indonesians who have earned a bachelor’s degree within the last five years and had neither parent has attended college. This study employed a phenomenological method to obtain the substance of how first-generation undergraduates in Indonesia interpret, process, and experience their persistence in college. The data collection was undertaken by use of two methods: questionnaire and interview. For data analysis, the study performed a set of analysis steps consisting of epoche, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and structural/textual descriptions synthesis. Based on the analyzed interviews, there were six themes identified regarding support sources of persistence of Indonesian undergraduates: a) family; b) faculty and staff; c) friends; d) pre-college information; e) self-motivation; and f) financial aid. From the findings of this study, to enhance Indonesian undergraduates’ success in remaining in and then graduating from college, institutions need to do as follows: building a learning community, organizing a first-year program, facilitating student-faculty relations, and offering essentially academic support.

This paper examines the collaborative processes involved in developing the MLC Libraries intranet website and outlines helpful hints about website design, evaluation and promotion. The MLC Libraries intranet website has been designed to provide the MLC community with information resources that reflect the educational, cultural, literary and recreational needs of the college. Information resources include an online suggestion book, online teacher librarian research assistance, access to the catalogue, newspaper and magazine databases, reading lists, information literacy programs and internet search tips. MLC Libraries promote the development of information literacy and nurture an appreciation of literature in a supportive, creative and information-rich learning environment. This intranet website was created by a team of MLC teacher librarians and library staff, with technical support from a website designer and MLC computer staff. It was launched to the MLC community in March 2003. The workshop will demonstrate a virtual and visual tour of the MLC Libraries intranet website.

Background:: In the era of information overload it is very difficult for a human reader to make sense of the vast information available in the internet quickly. Even for a specific domain like college or university website it may be difficult for a user to browse through all the links to get the relevant answers quickly. Objective:: In this scenario, design of a chat-bot which can answer questions related to college information and compare between colleges will be very useful and novel. Methods:: In this paper a novel conversational interface chat-bot application with information retrieval and text summariza-tion skill is designed and implemented. Firstly this chat-bot has a simple dialog skill when it can understand the user query intent, it responds from the stored collection of answers. Secondly for unknown queries, this chat-bot can search the internet and then perform text summarization using advanced techniques of natural language processing (NLP) and text mining (TM). Results:: The advancement of NLP capability of information retrieval and text summarization using machine learning tech-niques of Latent Semantic Analysis(LSI), Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), Word2Vec, Global Vector (GloVe) and Tex-tRank are reviewed and compared in this paper first before implementing them for the chat-bot design. This chat-bot im-proves user experience tremendously by getting answers to specific queries concisely which takes less time than to read the entire document. Students, parents and faculty can get the answers for variety of information like admission criteria, fees, course offerings, notice board, attendance, grades, placements, faculty profile, research papers and patents etc. more effi-ciently. Conclusion:: The purpose of this paper was to follow the advancement in NLP technologies and implement them in a novel application.

Directorate General of Institutional Affairs of Science, Technology and Higher Education in performing tasks and institutional functions requires the availability of data quickly and accurately. Along with the passage of time, the need for information systems of university data management is very necessary especially the data of colleges in violation. Currently, the management is manually stored into excel files which of course have a lot of limitations. This practice resulted in problems in the supervision of the process as well as the problems at the college in violation. To overcome these problems, it is required the design of information systems for problematic colleges that can meet existing business processes. This research used the design of requirements information system that meets the existing processing needs. This design employs the Rational Unified Process method, where the design follows the workflow requirements and is done iteratively as much as 3 iterations. The results of the study are the Requirement Artefact Set document that elaborates in detail the needs of the problematic college information system.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to answer the questions: What challenges do students face in an information commons and how does roving reference help?. Design/methodology/approach The author recounts her work roving in her community college information commons and supplements this with an analysis of 1,500 records from her detailed reference log that compares roving reference results with conventional references and with reference questions as a whole. Findings Her autoethnography and data reveal that roving substantially increases the number of reference encounters. In addition, her data sheds light on students’ struggles with common, productivity software, academic packages and malfunctioning hardware. More importantly, these findings show that roving reference data identify problems that librarians, as stakeholders, can solve. Research limitations/implications Roving reference in a community college information commons brings students in one library into sharper focus. Roving reference increases the number of reference encounters and the reach of reference service. It also exposes a use-based digital divide that calls for collaboration in the long run and increased point-of-need service immediately. Practical implications Even data that points to digital divides, hardware issues or other shortcomings and offers empirical evidence of problems for which library staff, unlike student workers, can find long-term solutions. This study shows that it is possible to gather rich and extensive data with minimal personnel and off-the-shelf software. Social implications A college degree is vital to social mobility and easing inequality. Fluency with academic technology and information is necessary for completing college. Roving reference means more opportunities to teach information and computer fluency at point of need and more opportunities for librarian stakeholders to find and remove obstacles to student learning. Originality/value This is one of the few, recent studies, autoethnographic or otherwise, on roving reference in a community college library’s information commons.

This article builds on previous studies that establish urban high school contexts that Latina/o/x students likely navigate as under-resourced and deficit. Guided by the frameworks of community-oriented teachers of Color and nepantleras, this study takes an asset-based approach to examine how Latina/o/x educators fostered college aspirations and how they developed college-going structures to support college aspirations of Latina/o/x students. Findings clarify that through self-reflection and collaboration, teachers engaged in college information workshops, college exploration assignments, and supported students with applying to extracurricular internships. The study proposes the concept of community-oriented nepantlera educators who aim to develop a bridge between high school and college for Latina/o/x first-generation college students.

A study devoted to the origin of the planning system of the Tyrgan district to the west of the Siberian city of Prokopyevsk is presented. The planning system concept originally proposed by a design team led by the German architect Ernst May was considered for the development of the Tyrgan district. The study is based on cartographic, literary and iconographic sources, as well as on an examination of buildings preserved from the 1920-1930s. The historical reasons for attracting foreign specialists, including the personal input of Ernst May, to create a master plan for the development of this industrial area are provided. The structure of the master plan for the development of Tyrgan and the role of the first conceptual proposals by "May Brigade" architectural group led by Ernst May for the placement of residential buildings in the borderless territory are analysed with the revealed elements of buildings that previously existed in this territory. In the historical zone, a fragment of “line building” is revealed repre-sented by five residential buildings having a unique urban planning environment in combination with communal houses and the Mining College. Information on the current state of identified objects is pre-sented. The conducted study justifies the rejection of an opinion expressed in a number of publications on the indirect influence of the Tyrgan planning scheme developed by the Ernst May design team in 1930 on the modern layout of the city which served as the basis for further design proposals. According to this scheme, the directions of the main highways in the historical eastern part of the city were laid along with a definition of the development concept of the district as a whole. The residential territory as envisaged in the scheme Ernst May developed in the western direction, taking into account the com-plexity of the relief.
