This reflective piece will explore the importance of peer coaching as a tool to support studies, while also addressing the isolative nature of not just doctoral study but also in the authors’ wider professional leadership lives. As we all face an extended period at home (and for Lacey and Kerry this means also juggling caring responsibilities and home schooling) the reflective piece will examine how this peer coaching relationship has enabled them to navigate COVID-19, re-constituting themselves as leaders in a spatially and temporally different environment.

Candidates who pursue a Doctor of Education (EdD) often have a unique set of challenges as these candidates typically hold professional leadership roles in schools, districts, or organizations while taking courses and completing a dissertation. EdD candidates may benefit from participating in a mentoring relationship to gain social, emotional, academic, and career readiness support. In this paper, we explore perceptions of an EdD mentoring program related to sustainability, networking, and expected outcomes of their current mentoring opportunities. Perceptions of mentors’ and mentees’ self-efficacy, readiness, and progress are also studied in order to better support candidates in completing the doctoral program.

The success experience of a financial institutions senior management. No clarity exists either in literature or in practice regarding people’s success experience. People often experience a dissonance between external success and internal fulfillment. Important components needed to experience success were identified from literature in order to determine in practice to what extent such components formed part of the success experience of a financial institution’s senior management. Internal (intrinsic) and external (extrinsic) factors were identified as necessary factors in order to experience success in a balanced way. In this article the findings of senior management’s success experience are reported. The research was conducted by means of qualitative and quantitative methodology from a Personal and Professional Leadership perspective. OpsommingDaar is onduidelikheid in die literatuur, en in die praktyk, oor wat presies die belewenis van sukses by mense is. Mense ervaar dikwels ’n dissonans tussen uiterlike sukses en innerlike vervulling. Belangrike komponente in die belewing van sukses is in die literatuur geïdentifiseer en in die praktyk getoets om vas te stel tot welke mate interne (intrinsieke) en eksterne (ekstrinsieke) faktore deel uitmaak van die suksesbelewing van senior bestuur in ’n finansiële instelling. Beide stelle faktore is van belang om op ’n gebalanseerde wyse sukses te kan beleef. In hierdie artikel word die bevindings ten opsigte van senior bestuur se suksesbelewing gerapporteer. Die navorsing is met behulp van kwalitatiewe sowel as kwantitatiewe metodologie vanuit Persoonlike en Professionele Leierskapsperspektief ondersoek.

This study describes a questionnaire survey of school librarians in North Carolina who have received advanced certification from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. The survey was conducted to identify the transformational leadership practices of these school librarians and assess their ability to implement professional leadership guidelines. School librarians’ leadership practices were assessed using the Leadership Practices Inventory, 3rd Edition (LPI). School librarians perceived themselves as possessing a high level of transformational leadership in the five exemplary practices identified by the LPI: Modeling the Way (MTW), Inspiring a Shared Vision (ISV), Challenging the Process (CTP), Enabling Others to Act (EOA) and Encouraging the Heart (ETH). They perceived themselves as being very strong at MTW and EOA. They were less successful at ISV and CTP. Overall, they were very successful in implementing professional leadership guidelines. Successful implementation of these guidelines was highly correlated with ISV and CTP.

AbstractThe Covid-19 pandemic has demonstrated the vulnerability of our health care systems as well as our societies. During the year of 2020, we have witnessed how whole societies globally have been in a turbulent state of transformation finding strategies to manage the difficulties caused by the pandemic. At first glance, the health promotion perspective might seem far away from handling the serious impacts caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, as health promotion is about enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants, paradoxically health promotion seems to be ever more important in times of crisis and pandemics. Probably, in the future, pandemics will be a part of the global picture along with the non-communicable diseases. These facts strongly demand the health care services to reorient in a health promoting direction.The IUHPE Global Working Group on Salutogenesis suggests that health promotion competencies along with a reorientation of professional leadership towards salutogenesis, empowerment and participation are required. More specifically, the IUHPE Group recommends that the overall salutogenic model of health and the concept of SOC should be further advanced and applied beyond the health sector, followed by the design of salutogenic interventions and change processes in complex systems.

Principals need and require specific professional development that is rigorous, effective, and aligned to professional leadership standards and effective professional development constructs. This case study examined the professional development strategies, and practices, used by school districts and their alignment to the California Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (CPSEL) and effective professional development constructs. School district administrators and principals representing the Southern San Joaquin Valley, a predominantly rural area of California, participated in this research via interviews and focus groups. This research is critical as rural areas are often underrepresented in educational research. The findings indicate a lack of intentional alignment of principal professional development with professional standards and professional development constructs. The findings call for districts to take an intentional approach to principal development that is aligned with these frameworks to ensure principals are provided with effective and rigorous support for their educational leadership, growth, and development.

Objective. Many organizations make efforts to identify future pediatric leaders, often focusing on chief residents (CRs). Identifying future leaders is an issue of great importance not only to the ultimate success of the organization but also to the profession. Because little is known regarding whether completing a CR predicts future leadership in medicine, we sought to determine if former pediatric CRs when compared with pediatric residents who were not CRs reported more often that they were leaders in their profession. Design/Methods. Twenty-four pediatric training programs stratified by resident size (<18, 18–36, and >36) and geography (East, South, Midwest, and West) were selected randomly from the Graduate Medical Education Directory(American Medical Association, Chicago, IL). Program directors were contacted by mail and telephone and asked to provide their housestaff rosters from 1965–1985. The resulting resident sample was surveyed by questionnaire in 1995. Results. Fifteen of 17 program directors (88%) who possessed the requested data provided 1965–1985 rosters yielding a sample of 963 residents. Fifty-five percent of the resident sample (533) responded. Fifty-eight of the respondents had not completed a pediatric residency, leaving a survey sample of 475. Thirty-four percent (163) were CRs. The sample had a mean age of 47, 67% were male and 87% married. Fellowships were completed by 51%. More former CRs compared with non-CRs (75% vs 64%), more former fellows than non-fellows (75% vs 60%) and more males than females (74% vs 55%) reported they were professional leaders. These associations persisted in a logistic regression that controlled for CR status, gender, marital status, and fellowship status as leadership predictors. Former CRs, former fellows, and men were, respectively, 1.8, 2.3, and 2.3 times more likely to report professional leadership. Conclusions. Pediatric residents who were former CRs and/or fellows, and males were more likely to report professional leadership. Although men were more likely to report professional leadership, with more women entering pediatrics the reported gender differences will likely disappear over time.
