Purpose – This study is a replication of Wolff and Reed’s (2000) work. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the combination of resources brought to joint ventures influence parent-firm performance. This study is also interested in whether or not the exposure of immobile resources through the semi-transparent membrane of the joint venture can have negative effects on parent-firm performance. Design/methodology/approach – The sample consists of two-parent joint ventures formed by publicly traded US firms between 1997 and 2013. The event-study methodology is used to calculate each parent-firm’s abnormal returns. This work also uses content analysis to analyze parent-firms’ annual reports (10-K). Findings – While Wolff and Reed’s results on resource allocation within joint ventures were not statistically significant, this replication study provided strong support to the resource allocation hypothesis. It was found that intangible resource heterogeneity within a joint venture creates higher performance gains for parent-firms than tangible resource heterogeneity. This work also successfully replicated Wolff and Reed’s findings on the negative impact of immobile resources exposure on parent-firm performance. Wolff and Reed’s results on resource complementarity were, however, not successfully replicated. Originality/value – This replication study goes beyond simply showing that engaging in a joint venture strategy creates value for parent-firms. Through the use of a new content analysis method, this study was able to provide strong support for Wolff and Reed’s theory on the performance gains provided by resource heterogeneity in a joint venture setting, and to confirm the results on potential adverse performance effects of immobile resources exposure.

Competition  in  global  industries  is  shifting  increasingly from  inter-firm  rivalry  to  rivalry  between  networks  of  firms. Strategies of individual  firms are thus contingent on the degree of interdependence that exists between them and the parent firm in the network. The present study examines the effect of network affiliation on a member firm’s decision to enter a foreign market and  international  strategic  alliance  formation.  Affiliate  firms have two options available to them: (1) enter into a competitive strategic alliance with a competitor or (2) enter into a symbioticstrategic alliance with  the parent firm of the network organiza-tion.  We tested  this assertion  using  data  from archival  sources on  sixty-five  Japanese  automobile  suppliers  that  had  set  up strategic  alliances  in  Malaysia  and  that  belonged  to  various inter-organizational  networks.  Results  indicate  that  when  affili-ate firms are dependent on the parent firm, they prefer to form symbiotic  strategic  alliances.  Conversely,  affiliate  firms  prefer competitive  strategic  alliances  with  competitors  when  they  are not  dependent  on  the  parent  firm. The article presents the results of the rating of Russian economic journals, the methodology of which is based on a combination of bibliometric data and expert interviews. Processing of the statistical information system of Russian science citation index (RINC) allows us to form a “primary” list of the best journals in the country. Expert evaluation of the list makes it possible to reorganize it with regard to the scientific level of periodicals and get the “secondary” list. The merger of two ranking systems forms the basis of obtaining the final ranking of economic journals. It is shown that the leading part of the constructed rating forms a kind of the Diamond List of journals, which on the whole agrees with similar lists obtained in earlier studies by other authors.

Usaha Mikro Kecil Menengah (UMKM) yang berada di Desa Koto rendah, Kecamatan Siulak, Kabupaten Kerinci adalah bentuk Kelompok Usaha Bersama (KUBE) dari ibu-ibu rumah tangga yang mempunyai usaha bisnis dalam kuliner, pembibitan, pengolahan hasil pertanian dan perkebunan sekitar yang mereka miliki maupun penduduk setempat. Kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan mengenai kemampuan untuk melakukan perencanaan bisnis (Business Plan). Selain itu, untuk memberikan peningkatan keterampilan dalam merencanakan bisnis menggunakan bisnis model. Metode yang akan digunakan untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut adalah dengan pelatihan dan pendampingan membuat rencana bisnis dalam lembar kerja bisnis model canvas.Kata Kunci : UMKM, KUBE Business PlanABSTRACTSmall and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) located in Koto low Village, Siulak Sub-District, Kerinci Regency is a form of Joint Venture Group (KUBE) of housewives who have business ventures in culinary, nursery, processing of agricultural products and plantations. Building on the assumption that the physical environment can have an influence on the creativity of designers and design students in particular, the aim of this paper is to provide theoretical propositions and evidences for this relationship. We develop various propositions about the influence of physical environments on creativity, based on eight expert interviews and supported by literature. A particular focus was given to the environments of design educational institutions. We present a summary of the main insights and visualize the developed propositions as a causal graph addressing how space influences creativity. These propositions can be regarded as a first step towards a theory of creativity-supporting learning environments and they can serve as a reference when designing or adjusting creative learning spaces.
