Abstract:The University of Maryland at Baltimore has established a database of health/medical informatics programs worldwide. Since 1991, IMIA’s Working Group on Education and Training in Medical Informatics has provided guidance on critical issues of policy and purpose. At the Heidel-berg/Heilbronn Working Conference in 1992 on Health/Medical Informatics education, representatives to WG1 and participants made suggestions regarding database intent, structure, and attributes.

The overall economic, social and environmental health of rural communities is one of the critical issues facing Australia. Without access to basic services, a small community can be left with a standard of living more like that of a third world country. Increasingly, services have an electronic component. Convergent digital services can lead to transformative effects, but can also exacerbate existing divides if technologies and the capacity to use them effectively are not available. Teleservice centres have in the past provided many forms of electronic services and training: computing, fax, printers, banking, etc. Today Internet functionality is a central aspect of rural teleservice centres, with broadband a looming issue. This article presents teleservice centres as a strategic national resource. Their potential to contribute to rural sustainability and equitable access to government services means that at every level of community and government, teleservice centres can delivery triple bottom line benefits.

New trends in information technology are strongly influencing and shaping the growth of e-learning, and progressively resolving a number of critical issues currently limiting its dissemination to wider populations. The main goal of this chapter is to outline the MySelf Project, which aims to expand the potential of e-learning through the implementation of Affective Computing and training in soft skills. The chapter contents are therefore divided into two main sections: firstly, implementation of affective computing in the Myself project through the design and development of a 3D virtual tutor and research on possible implementations of multimodal recognition of user emotions; secondly, the development of 3D interactive simulations for soft skills training. Each section sets out the state of the art for the areas covered, outlines the Myself project objectives and possible operative applications, describes the work carried out to date, and discusses critical issues, open questions and future directions for the project.

The field of Rehabilitation is faced with a number of critical issues at the national level. The rehabilitation agency supervisor is in a unique position to address these issues at the local level. This article examines the unique, complex, and challenging role that the supervisor has in addressing issues of recruitment and retention of qualified personnel, working within outcomes based framework of evaluation, and facilitating continuous learning and training within the rehabilitation agency. Specifically, supervisors benefit from an understanding of the developmental nature of the professional, issues surrounding professionalization and licensure, program evaluation, and professional centered training. The purpose of this article is to discuss these issues in more detail, and provide supervisors with ideas of how they can have an impact on national concerns at the practitioner level.

The field of construction is always affected by a large number of accidents at work that have many different causes and responsible. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to focus on all these issues, in order to reduce all risk factors that can undermine individuals’ safety on building sites. The objective of the research is then the development of a method for quick on site analysis of all critical issues that can create accidents and identification of the related causes in order to directly provide a correct and focused training identified as the best method to act on the causes to reduce accidents. The research was carried on during construction of the Universal Exhibition of Milan – Expo 2015 – that counted almost 70 contemporary construction sites. To reach the goals further research steps has been followed and in particular: (i) inspections on building sites through all the Expo area; (ii) analysis of the main identified problems; (iii) development of a methodology to quickly identify the cause of problems; (iv) validation of the method through back office analysis of site documents; (v) correct on-site training according to found problem. During the whole construction site, the improvements in criticalities solving have been visible thanks to the focused training. The developed method, carried on in a high-risk environment, is applicable in any other building sites and environment as independent from the boundary conditions of the place.

The pressures on the health workforce have a profound impact on the quality of care. The solution to health workforce issues is a global concern and governments and health systems around the world are seeking solutions to the problems of worker shortages and access to health services. Education and training of more doctors, nurses, and other health professionals require long-term policy changes, funding, and infrastructure development. Telehealth has been identified as an alternative solution to address some of these critical issues and this chapter outlines the potential of telehealth to address some challenges facing the health workforce. The discussion will provide evidence for feasible and effective adoption of telehealth solutions.

While abuse in the literature has been defined by researchers and providers as physical, sexual, emotional, and financial abuse and neglect, it is not clear how persons with disabilities (PWD) define abuse and who they see as likely abusers. This paper explores the issue of abuse with PWD themselves. It asks about the types of behaviors identified as abusive and who PWD see as likely abusers. Six focus groups were conducted with members of NJ self-advocacy groups. While PWD defined abuse using traditional categories, they also provided examples of situations involving infringement of rights. Perpetrators were more likely to be known rather than unknown and, very often, were family members. Our findings suggest the importance of exploring critical issues such as abuse with affected populations themselves. The findings also suggest the need for self-advocacy training and training for family members, caregivers and criminal justice personnel. KEY WORDS: Disabilities, abuse.
