AbstractDefect spectrum N(E) of porous organic dielectric (POD) films is studied with capacitance deep-level-transient-spectroscopy (C-DLTS) in the energy range up to 0.7 eV below conduction band bottom Ec. The POD films were prepared by spin coating onto 200mm p-type (1 – 10 Δcm) single-side polished silicon substrates followed by baking at 325°C on a hot plate and curing at 425°C in furnace. The film thickness is in the 5000 – 6000 Å range. The ‘sandwich’ -type NiCr/POD/p-Si/NiCr test structures showed both rectifying DC current-voltage characteristics and linear 1/C2 vs. DC reverse bias voltage. These confirm the applicability of the C-DLTS technique for defect spectrum deconvolution and the n-type conductivity of the studied films. Isochronal annealing (30 min in argon or 60 min in nitrogen) has been performed over the temperature range 300°C - 650°C. The N(E) distribution is only slightly affected by annealing in argon. However, the distribution depends strongly on the annealing temperature in nitrogen ambient. A strong N(E) peak at Ec – E = 0.55 – 0.60 eV is detected in all samples annealed in argon but this peak is practically absent in samples annealed in nitrogen at Ta < 480°C. On the other hand, two new peaks at Ec – E = 0.12 and 0.20 eV appear in the N(E) spectrum of the samples annealed in nitrogen at Ta = 650°C. The different features of the defect spectrum are attributed to different interactions of argon and nitrogen with dangling carbon bonds on the intra-pore surfaces.

For the traditional single-side planetary abrasive lapping process particle trajectories passing over the target surface are found to be periodically superposed due to the rational rotation speed ratio of the lapping plate to workpiece that could affect the material removal uniformity and hence its surface quality. This paper reports on a novel driving system design with combination of the tapered roller and contact roller to realize the irrational rotation speed ratio of the lapping plate to workpiece in the single-side planetary abrasive lapping process for the improvement of surface quality. Both of the numerical and experimental investigations have been conducted to evaluate the abrasive lapping performance of the novel driving system. It has been found from the numerical simulation that particle trajectories would theoretically cover the whole target surface if the lapping time is long enough due to their non-periodic characteristics, which can guarantee the uniformity of material removal from the surface of workpiece with relatively high surface quality. The encouraging experimental results underline the potential of the novel driving system design in the application of the single-side planetary abrasive lapping for the improvement of the surface quality in terms of surface roughness and material removal uniformity.

Background. Although the procedure requires a small surgical incision and a short duration, incision infection rate is very low in thyroidectomy; however, doctors still have misgivings about infection events.Aim. We retrospectively analyzed the prevention of incision infection without perioperative use of antibacterial medications following thyroidectomy.Materials and Methods. 1166 patients of thyroidectomy were not administered perioperative antibiotics. Unilateral total lobectomy or partial thyroidectomy was performed in 68.0% patients with single-side nodular goiter or thyroid adenoma. Bilateral partial thyroidectomy was performed in 25.5% patients with nodular goiter or Graves’ disease. The mean time of operation was 80.6 ± 4.87 (range: 25–390) min.Results.Resuturing was performed in two patients of secondary hemorrhage from residual thyroid following bilateral partial thyroidectomy. Temporally recurrent nerve paralysis was reported following right-side total lobectomy and left-side subtotal lobectomy in a nodular goiter patient. One case had suppurative infection in neck incision 5 days after bilateral partial thyroidectomy.Conclusions. Thyroidectomy, which is a clean incision, involves a small incision, short duration, and minor hemorrhage. If the operation is performed under strict conditions of sterility and hemostasis, antibacterial medications may not be required to prevent incision infection, which reduces cost and discourages the excessive use of antibiotics.

The transverse asymmetry of the index modulation profile in the asymmetric few-mode fiber Bragg grating (FM-FBG) was investigated. The transverse asymmetry of the index modulation profile will lead to mode conversion between modes with the different azimuthal orders, and this asymmetry is characterized by the attenuation coefficient α. We evaluated that the value of attenuation coefficient α was 0.2 μm−1, and grating amplitude χ was 2.8 × 10−4 for FM-FBG inscribed by UV single-side illumination. We found that the optimized value of α was 0.16 μm−1, at which the maximum mode conversion efficiency of LP01–LP11 can be achieved. The results of this paper provide great potential application in few-mode fiber (FMF) devices and mode division multiplexing (MDM) optical communication.
