The conventional seismic trace can be viewed as the real component of a complex trace which can be uniquely calculated under usual conditions. The complex trace permits the unique separation of envelope amplitude and phase information and the calculation of instantaneous frequency. These and other quantities can be displayed in a color‐encoded manner which helps an interpreter see their interrelationship and spatial changes. The significance of color patterns and their geological interpretation is illustrated by examples of seismic data from three areas.

The high degree of knowledge of the upper horizons of the sedimentary cover of the Middle and South Caspian depressions, given an insufficient increase in hydrocarbon reserves, leads to the need for a detailed approach to the search for oil and gas deposits in deep-seated sediments (over 6 km). During the geological interpretation of new highly informative seismic data, as well as data of deep drilling and petrological core studies, there were revealed obvious shortcomings in the concepts of the origin and evolution of the Middle and South Caspian depressions. These ideas misinterpret evolution, especially the South Caspian Basin, which is characterized by a number of unique features: very thick sedimentary cover (up to 22 km), extremely high sedimentation rate, low heat flow and reservoir temperatures, abnormally high pore and reservoir pressures, high clay content of the section, etc. The main purpose of the study was to elucidate the regional structure and features of the dissection of the sedimentary cover of the Middle and South Caspian depressions, the conditions of occurrence and distribution of facies and thicknesses of individual complexes of deposits. The paper analyzes the results of some previous studies of the geological structure of the Middle and South Caspian depressions based on the data of deep seismic sounding, seismological and gravimetric observations. We consider the main conclusions of these studies, about the geological structure of the sedimentary complex of the region’s, very outdated and subject to revision. The results of seismic stratigraphic analysis of seismic data allowed the authors to identify new data about the tectonic structure and express a completely different point of view regarding the structure of the sedimentary cover in the region. The work also touches on the issue associated with the tectonics of the region and the alleged subduction zone here.

Multiple often and always appear in marine seismic data due to very high acoustic impedance contrasts. These events have undergone more than one reflection. This causes the signal to arrive back at the receiver at an erroneous time, which, in turn, causes false results and can result in data misinterpretation. Several types of multiple suppression have been studied in literature. Methods that attenuate multiples can be classified into three broad categories: deconvolution methods; filtering methods and wavefield prediction subtraction methods. The study area is situated on Seram Sea in between 131°15’E – 132°45’E and 3°0’S – 4°0’S, Seram Trough which is located beneath Seram Sea at northern part of the Banda-Arc – Australian collision zone and currently the site of contraction between Bird’s Head and Seram. This research uses predictive deconvolution and FK-filter to attenuate short period multiple from their move out, then continued by SRME method to predict multiple that cannot be attenuated from previous method, then followed by Radon transform to attenuate multiple that still left and cannot be attenuated by SRME method. The result of each method then compared to each other to see how well multiple attenuated. Predictive deconvolution and F-K filter could not give satisfactory result especially complex area where multiple in dipping event is not periodic, SRME method successfully attenuate multiple especially in near offset multiple without need subsurface information, while SRME method fails to attenuate long offset multiple, combination of SRME method and Radon transform can give satisfactory result with careful selection of the Radon transform parameters because it can obscure some primary reflectors. Based on geological interpretation, Seram Trough is built by dominant structural style of deposited fold and thrust belt. The deposited fold and thrust belt has a complexly fault geometry from western zone until eastern of seismic line.

The successful exploration for new reservoirs in mature areas, as well as the optimal development of existing fields, requires the integration of unconventional geological and geophysical techniques. In particular, the calibration of 3D seismic data to well log information is crucial to obtain a quantitative understanding of reservoir properties. The advent of new technology for prestack seismic data analysis and 3D visualisation has resulted in improved fluid and lithology predictions prior to expensive drilling. Increased reservoir resolution has been achieved by combining seismic inversion with AVO analysis to minimise exploration risk.In this paper we present an integrated and systematic approach to prospect evaluation in an oil/gas field. We will show how petrophysical analysis of well log data can be used as a feasibility tool to determine the fluid and lithology discrimination capabilities of AVO and inversion techniques. Then, a description of effective AVO and prestack inversion tools for reservoir property quantification will be discussed. Finally, the incorporation of the geological interpretation and the use of 3D visualisation will be presented as a key integration tool for the discovery of new plays.

A seismic and geological interpretation of the area between latitudes 67°30'N and 73°N offshore West Greenland, was completed in 1995 and has been published as an Open File Series report (Whittaker, 1995). The area is characterised by extensive Early Tertiary basalts which are the seaward extension of the plateau basalts exposed in the Disko - Nuussuaq - Svartenhuk Halvø area onshore (Clarke & Pedersen, 1976). These basalts present special problems in the processing and interpretation of seismic data. The interpretation incorporates all the seismic data acquired prior to the 1995 field season, inc1uding those lines acquired during the first phase of exploration in the 1970s. Ties to two of the exploration wells drilled offshore southem West Greenland have led to a greater understanding of the timing and kinematics of teetonie events during the Tertiary period; such events are not recorded in the onshore area. The area is considered to have significant exploration potential and warrants additional studies to determine the thickness of the basalt formation in the area.

Under the Australian Government’s Energy Security Program, Geoscience Australia is conducting a seismic survey and a marine reconnaissance survey to acquire new geophysical data and obtain geological samples in frontier basins along the southwest Australian continental margin. Specific areas of interest include the Mentelle Basin, northern Perth Basin, Wallaby Plateau and the southern Carnarvon Basin. The regional seismic survey will acquire 8,000–10,000 km of industry-standard 2D reflection seismic data using an 8 km solid streamer and a 12 second record length, together with gravity and magnetic data. These new geophysical datasets, together with over 7,000 km of reprocessed open-file seismic, will facilitate more detailed mapping of the regional geology, determination of total sediment thickness, interpretation of the nature and thickness of crust beneath the major depocentres, modelling of the tectonic evolution and an assessment of the petroleum prospectivity of frontier basins along the southwest margin. The overall scientific aim of the marine survey is to collect swath bathymetry, potential field data, geological samples and biophysical data. Together with the new seismic data, samples recovered from frontier basins will assist in understanding the geological setting and petroleum prospectivity of these little known areas. Preliminary results from both surveys will be presented for the first time at this conference.
