Morphological and anatomical traits of the Vinca leaf were examined using microscopy techniques. Outdoor Vinca minor and V. herbacea plants and greenhouse cultivated V. major and V. major var. variegata plants had interspecific variations. All Vinca species leaves are hypostomatic. However, except for V. minor leaf, few stomata were also present on the upper epidermis. V. minor leaf had the highest stomatal index and V. major had the lowest, while the distribution of trichomes on the upper epidermis was species-specific. Differentiated palisade and spongy parenchyma tissues were present in all Vinca species’ leaves. However, V. minor and V. herbacea leaves had a more organized anatomical aspect, compared to V. major and V. major var. variegata leaves. Additionally, as a novelty, the cellular to intercellular space ratio of the Vinca leaf’s mesophyll was revealed herein with the help of computational analysis. Lipid droplets of different sizes and aspects were localized in the spongy parenchyma cells. Ultrastructural characteristics of the cuticle and its epicuticular waxes were described for the first time. Moreover, thick layers of cutin seemed to be characteristic of the outdoor plants only. This could be an adaptation to the unpredictable environmental conditions, but nevertheless, it might influence the chemical composition of plants.

Highly oriented and self-ordered titanium-niobium-iron mixed oxide nanotubes were synthesized by anodizing Ti10NbxFe alloys in ethylene glycol electrolytes containing NH4F and water at 20 °C. The nanostructure morphologies were found to depend closely on the nature of the alloy substrates. The results demonstrate the possibility of growing mixed oxide nanotubes possessing several-micrometer-thick layers by a simple and straightforward electrochemical route. The methylene blue degradation rate of fabricated Ti-Nb-Fe-O nanotubes increased by 33% compared to TiO2 nanotubes and TiO2 nanoparticle films under solar irradiation. The combination of the gully-like morphology and the rich defects introduced by Nb and Fe co-doping in Ti-Nb-Fe-O mixed nanotube oxides was demonstrated to be beneficial for enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance. Ti-Nb-Fe-O nanotubes can achieve effective photodegradation without secondary pollution with more reusability than powder photocatalysts.

The foundations for numerous dams in proglacial and interglacial valleys in the Prairie provinces consist of soft alluvial soils. The deposits are up to 60 m deep, and contain thick layers of clay interspersed with lenses and layers of silt, sand, and gravel.This paper describes the damsite investigation and laboratory testing required, the design methods and construction procedures used, and the foundation performance observed during and after construction. A number of empirical relationships between index tests and physical properties of the soils, which provide useful guidelines for preliminary design, are presented.The design approach has gradually evolved from an empirical design with limited testing to a more rational design based on detailed investigations and thorough instrumentation. Increased reliance is placed on observational apparatus to monitor movements and pore pressures to confirm design assumptions as construction proceeds. The theoretical design is always checked with former designs of dams that have performed satisfactorily.Safe economical dams have been constructed in spite of large deformations and high pore pressures. Two case histories illustrate the wide range in dam design for alluvial foundations. The first shows an older design cross section with modifications required to ensure a stable dam, and the second describes a recently constructed dam that incorporates many of the latest design concepts.

A visible-light-responsive TiO2-xNx photocatalyst was prepared by a very simple method. Ammonia solution was used as nitrogen resource in this paper. The TiO2-xNx photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), UV-Vis diffuse reflection spectra (DRS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The ethylene was selected as a target pollutant under visible light excitation to evaluate the activity of this photocatalyst. The new prepared TiO2-xNx photocatalyst with strong photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation was demonstrated in the experiment.
