This work successfully prepared an UV curable organic-inorganic hybrid material consisting of organic modified colloidal silica. Applications of UV curable organic-inorganic hybrid materials include abrasion resistant coatings, photo-patternable thin films and waveguides. Colloidal silica containing reactive functional groups were also prepared by reacting organic silane and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) using sol-gel process. In addition, the efficiency of grafting organic moiety onto silica nanoparticles was investigated by applying TGA and FTIR techniques. Experimental results indicated a strong interdependence between surface modification efficiency and solution pH. Acrylate-SiO2 hybrid formation could result in a shifting of thermal degradation temperature of organic component from about 200°C to near 400°C. In addition, the stability of organic modified colloidal silica in UV curable formula and the physical properties of resulting coatings were discussed. Furthermore, the morphology of organic modified colloidal silica was investigated by performing TEM and SEM studies‥

A sol-gel process was used to prepare polyimide-silica hybrid films from the polyimide precursors and TEOS in N,N- dimethyl acetamide, then the hybrid film was treated with hydrofluoric acid to remove the dispersed silica particles, leaving pores with diameters between 80nm to 1µm, depending on the size of silica particles. The structure and dielectric constant of the hybrid and porous films were characterized by FTIR,SEM. The porous films displayed relatively low dielectric constant compared to the hybrid polyimide-silica films.

In this study, structural colors were fabricated by producing an amorphous array with atypical silica particles. The colors were controlled by an array of silica particles with different sizes. In previous research, the process required inducement of the amorphous array, which was complex. Meanwhile, in this paper, we proposed a simple one-step process. First, spherical silica nanoparticles were synthesized using the sol-gel process of the Stöber method. Atypical silica particles that induced an amorphous array were produced by adding a small amount of phenol-formaldehyde resin. Subsequently, the colloidal silica was converted to a powder using a convection oven. The characteristics of the synthesized silica particles were confirmed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). All the synthesized silica powders obtained structural colors. Finally, the silica powders were dispersed in deionized (DI) water and coated on a glass slide. We confirmed that the silica particles showed different structural colors depending on the size of the particles. We also found that the color was highly independent of the viewing angle.

This paper deals with sol-gel process and application in no cement castables based on andalusite. The use of calcium free binder increases the refractory parameters of material and allows its faster drying. Six colloidal sols from CWK Bad Köstritz based on SiO2 were tested, which differed not only in concentration and particle size, but also in pH. The influence of silica sols on the consistency of fresh castable, initial setting and final setting times were investigated. Furthermore, basic parameters after firing, such as bulk density, apparent porosity, flexural and compressive strength, were tested.
