ABSTRACT When performing predictive durability analyses on tires using finite element methods, it is generally recognized that energy release rate (ERR) is the best measure by which to characterize the fatigue behavior of rubber. By addressing actual cracks in a simulation geometry, ERR provides a more appropriate durability criterion than the strain energy density (SED) of geometries without cracks. If determined as a function of crack length and loading history, and augmented with material crack growth properties, ERR allows for a quantitative prediction of fatigue life. Complications arise, however, from extra steps required to implement the calculation of ERR within the analysis process. This article presents an overview and some details of a method to perform such analyses. The method involves a preprocessing step that automates the creation of a ribbon crack within an axisymmetric-geometry finite element model at a predetermined location. After inflating and expanding to three dimensions to fully load the tire against a surface, full ribbon sections of the crack are then incrementally closed through multiple solution steps, finally achieving complete closure. A postprocessing step is developed to determine ERR as a function of crack length from this enforced crack closure technique. This includes an innovative approach to calculating ERR as the crack length approaches zero.

The potency of oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) fibers as one of the by-products of processing oil palm is increasing significantly so that proper management is needed in reducing environmental impact. One of the utilization of OPEFB fibers is as a substitution material in construction which usually the material is derived from non-renewable mining materials so that the number is increasingly limited. Therefore, it is necessary to study to know the performance of OPEFB fiber in making construction products especially concrete. In this case, the experiment was conducted using experimental method with variation of fiber addition by 0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%. Each specimen was tested by weight, slump value, compressive strength, tensile strength, elasticity and crack length. As the results, the variation of fibers addition by 10%, decrease of slump value is 7%, concrete weight is 3% and crack length is 8% while increase of the compressive strength is 2.7% and the modulus of elasticity is 33.3% but its tensile strength decreased insignificantly by 0.05% . Furthermore, the addition of fibers above 10% to 30% decreased compressive strength is still below 10% and tensile strength below 2% while the weight of concrete, slump value and crack length decreased. Therefore, the addition of 10% can replace the performance of concrete without fiber but the addition of above 10% can still be used on non-structural concrete.

Acoustic waves are widely used in structural health monitoring (SHM) for detecting fatigue cracking. The strain energy released when a fatigue crack advances has the effect of exciting acoustic waves, which travel through the structures and are picked up by the sensors. Piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) can effectively sense acoustic waves due to fatigue-crack growth. Conventional acoustic-wave passive SHM, which relies on counting the number of acoustic events, cannot precisely estimate the crack length. In the present research, a novel method for estimating the crack length was proposed based on the high-frequency resonances excited in the crack by the energy released when a crack advances. In this method, a PWAS sensor was used to sense the acoustic wave signal and predict the length of the crack that generated the acoustic event. First, FEM analysis was undertaken of acoustic waves generated due to a fatigue-crack growth event on an aluminum-2024 plate. The FEM analysis was used to predict the wave propagation pattern and the acoustic signal received by the PWAS mounted at a distance of 25 mm from the crack. The analysis was carried out for crack lengths of 4 and 8 mm. The presence of the crack produced scattering of the waves generated at the crack tip; this phenomenon was observable in the wave propagation pattern and in the acoustic signals recorded at the PWAS. A study of the signal frequency spectrum revealed peaks and valleys in the spectrum that changed in frequency and amplitude as the crack length was changed from 4 to 8 mm. The number of peaks and valleys was observed to increase as the crack length increased. We suggest this peak–valley pattern in the signal frequency spectrum can be used to determine the crack length from the acoustic signal alone. An experimental investigation was performed to record the acoustic signals in crack lengths of 4 and 8 mm, and the results were found to match well with the FEM predictions.

The dynamic fracture response of a long beam of brittle elastic material subjected to pure bending is studied. If the magnitude of the applied bending moment is increased to a critical value, a crack will propagate from the tensile side of the beam across a cross section. An analysis is presented by means of which the crack length and bending moment at the fracturing section are determined as functions of time after fracture initiation. The main assumption on which the analysis rests is that, due to multiple reflections of stress waves across the thickness of the beam, the stress distribution on the prospective fracture plane ahead of the crack may be adequately approximated by the static distribution appropriate for the instantaneous crack length and net section bending moment. The results of numerical calculations are shown in graphs of crack length, crack tip speed, and fracturing section bending moment versus time. It is found that the crack tip accelerates very quickly to a speed near the characteristic terminal speed for the material, travels at this speed through most of the beam thickness, and then rapidly decelerates in the final stage of the process. The results also apply for plane strain fracture of a plate in pure bending provided that the value of the elastic modulus is appropriately modified.

The Impact

This study examined the impact of stirrer speed and bead material loading on fenofibrate particle breakage during wet stirred media milling (WSMM) via three kinetic models and a microhydrodynamic model. Evolution of median particle size was tracked via laser diffraction during WSMM operating at 3000–4000 rpm with 35–50% (v/v) concentration of polystyrene or zirconia beads. Additional experiments were performed at the center points of the above conditions, as well as outside the range of these conditions, in order to test the predictive capability of the models. First-order, nth-order, and warped-time kinetic models were fitted to the data. Main effects plots helped to visualize the influence of the milling variables on the breakage kinetics and microhydrodynamic parameters. A subset selection algorithm was used along with a multiple linear regression model (MLRM) to delineate how the breakage rate constant k was affected by the microhydrodynamic parameters. As a comparison, a purely empirical correlation for k was also developed in terms of the process/bead parameters. The nth-order model was found to be the best model to describe the temporal evolution; nearly second-order kinetics (n ≅ 2) was observed. When the process was operated at a higher stirrer speed and/or higher loading with zirconia beads as opposed to polystyrene beads, the breakage occurred faster. A statistically significant (p-value ≤ 0.01) MLRM of three microhydrodynamic parameters explained the variation in the breakage rate constant best (R2 ≥ 0.99). Not only do the models and the nth-order kinetic–microhydrodynamic correlation enable deeper process understanding toward developing a WSMM process with reduced cycle time, but they also provide good predictive capability, while outperforming the purely empirical correlation.
