Buckling and collapse are important failure modes for laying and operating conditions in a subsea position. The pipe will be subjected to various kinds of loads, i.e., bending moment, external pressure, and tension. Nonlinear finite element analysis was used to analyze the buckling strength of the pipe under pure bending and external pressure. The buckling of elastic and elasto-plastic materials was also studied in this work. The buckling strength due to external pressure had decreased and become constant on the long pipe when the length-to-diameter ratio (L/D) was increased. The non-dimensional parameter (β), which is proportionate to (D/t) (σy/E), is used to study the yielding influence on the buckling strength of pipe under combined bending and external pressure loading. The interaction curves of the buckling strength of pipe were obtained, with various the diameter-to-thickness ratio (D/t) under combination loads of external pressure and bending moment. For straight pipes L/D = 2.5 to 40, D = 1000 to 4000 mm, and D/t = 50 to 200 were set. The curved pipes D/t = 200, L/D =2.5 to 30 have been investigated by changing the radius of curvature-to-diameter ratio (R/D) from 50 to ∞, for each one. With decreasing R/D, the buckling strength under external pressure decreases slightly. This is in contrast to the bending of a curved pipe. When the value of R/D was decreased, the flexibility of the pipe was increased. However, the buckling strength of the pipe during bending was decreased due to the oval deformation at the cross-section.

An equivalent theoretical homogenization method was proposed for composite sandwich cylinders subjected to pure bending. Firstly, based on a homogeneous orthotropic layer hypothesis, the trapezoidal corrugated sandwich core was found to be equivalent in a homogenization orthotropic layer with the nine equivalent mechanical properties. Then, Lekhnitskii’s theory, based on a unified connection parameter method, was introduced and applied in the equivalent composite sandwich cylinder. The method developed by Lekhnitskii is suitable for arbitrary combinations of winding layers with different winding angles and materials. Additionally, the bending stiffness of the equivalent sandwich cylinder could be calculated. By developing user subroutine of UMAT, the numerical calculation results were in a good agreement with the results of the proposed method. Further, according to the Hill–Tsai strength criterion and the maximum strain criterion, parametric study was done for specified bending stiffness and specified bending strength. The results show that the influence of core parameters on the specified bending stiffness and strength are lower than that of the skin parameters. Additionally, larger skin thickness and smaller winding angles could improve the specified bending stiffness and specified bending strength of the composite corrugated sandwich cylinders.

Few studies, especially those related to field tests, have examined the bending behaviors of drilled shafts with partial casings (DSPCs). This work reports the results of experimental studies on the behavior of DSPCs under lateral loads, including an in situ test and a set of laboratory tests. First, a DSPC with a diameter of 2 m and length of 87.9 m was studied in clay beds, and a steel casing with a diameter of 2.0 m and length of 33 m was used. In this test, strain gauges were distributed along the steel rebars in the concrete pile and the wall of the steel tube at different depths, and thus the longitudinal strains of the concrete pile and the steel tube could be studied. Second, laboratory experiments were implemented with reinforced concrete-filled steel tubular columns under pure bending conditions. In these tests, strain gauges were distributed along the steel rebars in the concrete pile and the walls of the steel tubes at the pure bending section of the specimens. Different wall thicknesses and drilling fluid conditions were considered. The field test results show that the strain of the concrete piles and the steel tubes were linearly distributed at the same cross-section. This means that a DSPC remains a flat plane after it deforms. Whereas a correction coefficient related to the loading level need to be considered in the calculation of the bending stiffness. Laboratory studies show that the strain of DSPCs was linearly distributed at a small bending moment under the best bond-quality condition, whereas obvious nonlinear behaviors were shown under a large bending moment with poor bond-quality conditions.

This paper aims to analytically derive bending equations, as well as semi-analytically predict the deflection of prismatic SMA beams in the martensite phase. To this end, we are required to employ a simplified one-dimensional parametric model considering asymmetric response in tension and compression for martensitic beams. The model takes into account the different material parameters in martensite twined and detwinned phases as well as elastic modulus depending on the progress of the detwinning process. In addition, the model considers the diverse slope of loading and unloading in martensite detwinned phases favored by tension and compression. To acquire general bending equations, we first solve the pure bending problem of a prismatic SMA beam. Three different phases are assumed in the unloading procedure and the effect of neutral fiber distance from the centerline is also considered during this stage. Then according to the pure bending solution and employing semi-analytical methods, general bending equations of an SMA beam are derived. Polynomial approximation functions are utilized to obtain the beam deflection–length relationship. To validate the attained analytical expressions, several three- and four-point bending tests were conducted for rectangular and circular SMA beams. Experimental data confirm the reasonable accuracy of the analytical results. This work may be envisaged to go deep enough in investigating the response of SMA beams under an arbitrary transverse loading and stress distribution during loading and unloading, as well as findings may be applicable to a good prediction of bending behavior.

Abstract This article presents the materials of deformability studies of pre-stressed steel-concrete beams reinforced with a package of reinforcement with different ratio of tape and rebar in the pure bending moment zone. The aim of the research was determination of the reinforcement percentage influence, for pre-stressed reinforced concrete beams reinforced with a package of reinforcement on their deformability. Also, the aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of using pre-stressed rebar in combined reinforcement. The practical significance of the experimental research is to study the deformability in pre-stressed bending elements with external tape and rebar reinforcement, taking into account the influence of different ratios of reinforcement areas within the combined reinforcement and development of proposals for such structures` calculation and design. The scientific novelty of the research is in obtaining the deformability characteristics of reinforced concrete beams reinforced with a package of reinforcement (tape and steel bars with periodic profile) with different ratios in the case of static loads` action.
