Investigating and rethinking process in academic world influenced the architectural design culture. Affordable supporting digital tools lead the unlimited exploration into new ideas and possibilities. Heliodon is one of the tools to represent the sun mobility that helps analyze architectural form finding process. The Sun evolution and revolution are mapped into a computerized framework. With this framework, vendors and research group can develope its capability to create a powerful exploration tool. This opportunity gives a redefined meaning of the design process where all information is exchanged digitally. This study discusses some applications such as Google Sketch Up, Rhino ceros with its Grasshopper plug-in, and Graphisoft ArchiCAD which record physical data of climatic factors, The aim of this paper is to describe how sun study in digital tools redefines the architectural design process.

The article presents a research on real-time shape exploration employing analogue and digital form-finding and concludes with a proposal for a teaching methodology that led to an intensive student workshop which took place at the Institute of Architecture and Media at Graz University of Technology. The aim was to experiment with analogue and digital tools in parallel, counter-informing the design process. The experiments involved physical form-finding following the tradition of Frei Otto at the Institute of Lightweight Structures in Stuttgart as well as computational form-finding employing mainly dynamic relaxation techniques of spring-particle systems. The combination of techniques and methodologies eventually led to a feedback loop across different media that explored both qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the projects at hand. By establishing feedback between digital media and physical prototypes, the creative process is immediately informed by the material characteristics and properties which in turn give rise to a real-time exploration of form. Simulations of physical forces for architectural form generation are increasingly gaining ground in architectural education as there is a broad selection of computational tools readily available that allow quick experiments to be conducted.

This paper investigates material-based design approach in architectural forms where form generating process is informed by the combination of material properties and behavior as well as environmental constraints. It also tries to inform architects of the necessity of shift from formal form finding processes based on values of industrial age toward materiality in form generating processes. It also tries to overlook the current design practices in material-base design approaches to achieve a holistic understanding of the design process and possibilities. Through a comparative literature review, and an examination of current design practices, this paper elaborates on distinct material-based approach to design architectural form.
