The Talang Mamak tribe, one of Indonesian tribe, still practices the hunting and gathering of natural produce despite the fact that among them have chosen to settle permanently and doing farming activities. The aim of this research is to study the characteristics of the Talang Mamak house. The method used in this research is grounded theory method, based on the open coding, axial coding as well selective coding techniques. The method used to find the variation layout of the houses and then evaluate the characters and concept of the layouts. The conclusion of this study is that the core of the Talang Mamak house is based on the connectivity of four rooms namely: Ruang Haluan, Ruang Tangah, Ruang Tampuan and Pandapuran. The house has an open layout where all daily household activities are done without barriers. The social status of the owner is identified by houses furniture and staf

Wachsende Oral History-Archive weltweit beherbergen abertausende von Interviews, zur Gewaltgeschichte des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts ebenso wie zur Sozialgeschichte verlorener wie gegenwärtiger Lebenswelten. Das digitale Zeitalter macht viele dieser Interviews öffentlich zugänglich. Doch welche Herausforderungen ergeben sich daraus für Wissenschaft und Lehre? Um diese Frage geht es in diesem Aufsatz. An der Universität für Humanistik in Utrecht unterrichte ich das Fach „Narrative Research and Oral History: Theory, Method and Practice“. In meinem Seminar sprechen Zeitzeugen und Zeitzeuginnen durch ihre Egodokumente zu den Studierenden. Der Kurs bringt Selbstzeugnisse, Oral History und narrative Theorie in einen Dialog und erschließt damit den Studierenden die narrative Dimension des menschlichen Daseins. Ich zeige, in welcher Weise narrative (Erzähl-)Theorien hilfreich sind, um Oral History-Interviews in ihrer Komplexität zu analysieren; um simplifizierte Identitätskonstruktionen oder Zuschreibungskategorien wie „Generation“ oder „Trauma“ kritisch zu reflektieren sowie Potentiale und Risiken in Narrativen zu verorten. Mit diesem Aufsatz möchte ich auch der Debatte über das „Re-Using“ von Oral History aus digitalisierten Datenbanken einen Impuls geben.

The term grounded theory was introduced to the research lexicon by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss in the 1960s, particularly with the publication of The Discovery of Grounded Theory in 1967. The term itself is somewhat misleading since it does not refer to a theory per se but rather to a method that facilitates the development of new theoretical insights—grounded theories. In this chapter the method is outlined, together with some background to its appearance and subsequent developments. Some key aspects are demonstrated using brief examples and exercises. Later sections describe the main features, procedures, outputs, and evaluation criteria.

Let me begin with a simple theme, repentance, and a simple message: repent from complacency in the practice and defense of social science history (SSH). I say this because I do not see social science historians meeting three major challenges that must be overcome if the larger, collective enterprise is to survive with the same vitality it had a decade ago. Those challenges are, first, to bring social theory forcefully back into historical research; second, to take formal methods to a new, higher level; and, third, to seek to train the next generation of social science historians in the theory and methods they will need in the next century.

Soil conditioning is a key factor in increasing tunnel face stability and extraction efficiency of excavated soil when excavating tunnels using an earth pressure balance (EPB) shield tunnel boring machine (TBM). Weathered granite soil, which is abundant in the Korean Peninsula (also in Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore), has different characteristics than sand and clay; it also has particle-crushing characteristics. Conditioning agents were mixed with weathered granite soils of different individual particle-size gradations, and three characteristics (workability, permeability, and compressibility) were evaluated to find an optimal conditioning method. The lower and upper bounds of the water content that are needed for a well-functioning EPB shield TBM were also proposed. Through a trial-and-error experimental analysis, it was confirmed that soil conditioning using foam only was possible when the water content was controlled within the allowable range, that is, between the upper and lower bounds; when water content exceeded the upper bound, soil conditioning with solidification agents was needed along with foam. By taking advantage of the particle-crushing characteristics of the weathered granite soil, it was feasible to adopt the EPB shield TBM even when the soil was extremely coarse and cohesionless by conditioning with polymer slurries along with foam. Finally, the application ranges of EPB shield TBM in weathered granite soil were proposed; the newly proposed ranges are wider and expanded to coarser zones compared with those proposed so far.
