In the last decades, several plant-based materials were used for the substitution of fish meal and oil in aquaculture. The present study evaluated the fish quality and the sensory differences of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and pike-perch (Sander lucioperca) from three different feeding groups, which were fed a commercially available industrial (standard) diet, a control diet, and a special microorganism-based feed mix. This feed mainly consisted of a mix made of Rhodotorula glutinis, Crypthecodinium cohnii, and Arthrospira sp. and had 50% less fish meal and fish oil compared to typical control diets. At the beginning, the pike-perch population was six months old, and the rainbow trout population was 15 months old. The feeding study duration was 16 weeks and every four weeks the growth performance and several morphometric parameters were recorded. Afterwards, sensory evaluation took place to identify possible trends. Sensory evaluation revealed that the rainbow trout groups did not show any significant differences to the standard and control fish fillets with regard to odor, texture, and taste. The effects on rainbow trout growth performances and carcass parameters were similar to the standard group. The feed mix was not optimal for pike-perch farming, which was also reflected by significantly adversely affected growth performance and carcass parameters. The sensorial evaluation showed an opposite trend: here, only small differences in the fillets from the feed mix and standard/control diet were observed.

The aim of this study was to investigate the process of the cortical reaction in eggs of pikeperch, Sander lucioperca (L.), as well as the application of microscopic assessment of this process in egg quality evaluation. The analysis was carried out with eggs obtained from 10 females by artificial reproduction, in which hormonal stimulation with hCG was applied. Subsequently, each sample of eggs (separately from each female fish) was analysed. The analysis included observation of the cortical reaction and the process of egg swelling, and determination of the effect of temperature (12, 14 and 16°C) and the presence of spermatozoa on the cortical reaction. The results indicate that the cortical reaction in pikeperch eggs is quite violent, resulting in visible deformation of eggs between 3 and 5 min after activation. No effect of temperature or the presence of spermatozoa on the cortical reaction was observed. A strong correlation was recorded for the percentage of egg deformations observed and embryo survival rate. The described method of determination of pikeperch egg quality (based on egg deformation rate between 3 and 5 min after activation) may be highly useful, both in scientific research (where high-quality eggs are required) and in hatchery practice.

<p>Although thorough characterization of magnetospheric ion composition is rare for EMIC wave studies, convective processes that occur more frequently in Earth’s outer magnetosphere have allowed the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) satellites to make direct measurements of the cold and hot plasma composition during EMIC wave activity. We will present an observation and linear wave modeling case study conducted on EMIC waves observed during a perturbed activity period in the outer dusk-side magnetosphere. During the two intervals investigated for the case study, the MMS satellites made direct measurements of cold plasmaspheric plasma in addition to multiple hot ion components at the same time as EMIC wave emissions were observed. Applying the in-situ plasma composition data to wave modeling, we find that wave growth rate is impacted by the complex interactions between the cold as well as the hot ion components and ambient plasma conditions. In addition, we observe that linear wave properties (unstable wave numbers and band structure) can significantly evolve with changes in cold and hot ion composition. Although the modeling showed the presence of dense cold ions can broaden the range of unstable wave numbers, consistent with previous work, the hot heavy ions that were more abundant nearer storm main phase could limit the growth of EMIC waves to smaller wave numbers. In the inner magnetosphere, where higher cold ion density is expected, the ring current heavy ions could also be more intense near storm-time, possibly resulting in conditions that limit the interactions of EMIC waves with trapped radiation belt electrons to multi-MeV energies. Additional investigation when direct measurements of cold and hot plasma composition are available could improve understanding of EMIC waves and their interactions with trapped energetic particles in the inner magnetosphere.</p>
