Nanofibers membrane are potential material for water filtration, and surface properties of the membrane are an important factor to avoid fouling on the membrane surface. The combination of filter material is known to influence the membrane surface properties. We investigated the mixture of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and cellulose acetate (CA) on the nanofiber membrane by electrospinning. This blend was dissolved in dimethylformamide as feed polymer in electrospinning technique. We prepared the ratio of PAN to CA were 0:10, 4:6, 5:5, 6:4, and 10:0 in 8 wt%. All the membranes formed fiber, except 0:10 which only created a thin layer from the sprays. Contact angle measurements related to membrane surface properties were measured and resulted in 128o, 126o, and 125o for 4:6, 5:5 dan 6:4 membranes, respectively. This results indicated that all PAN/CA membranes had hydrophobic properties. The hydrophobic property was also observed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, a sharp peak of-CH3 appeared. It is interesting while mixing two hydrophilic polymers we obtain a hydrophobic membrane.

Several years ago Karasaki (1) reported the production of type C virus particles by Novikoff ascites hepatocarcinoma cells. More recently, Weinstein (2) has reported the presence of type C virus particles in cell cultures derived from transplantable and primary hepatocellular carcinomas. To date, the biological function of these virus and their significance in chemically induced hepatocarcinogenesis are unknown. The present studies were initiated to determine a possible role for type C virus particles in chemically induced hepatocarcinogenesis. This communication describes results of studies on the biological and surface properties of type C virus associated with Novikoff hepatocarcinoma cells.Ecotropic and xenotropic murine leukemia virus (MuLV) activity in ascitic fluid of Novikoff tumor-bearing rats was assayed in murine sarcoma virus transformed S+L- mouse cells and S+L- mink cells, respectively. The presence of sarcoma virus activity was assayed in non-virus-producing normal rat kidney (NRK) cells. Ferritin conjugates of concanavalin A (Fer-Con wheat germ agglutinin (Fer-WGA), and Ricinus communis agglutinins I and II (Fer-RCAI and Fer-RCAII) were used to probe the structure and topography of saccharide determinants present on the viral envelope.

Much of the work reported in the literature on cellulose acetate reverse osmosis membranes has raised new and important questions with regard to the dense or “active” layer of these membranes. Several thickness values and structures have been attributed to the dense layer. To ensure the correct interpretation of the cellulose acetate structure thirteen different preparative techniques have been used in this investigation. These thirteen methods included various combinations of water substitution, freeze drying, freeze sectioning, fracturing, embedding, and microtomy techniques with both transmission and scanning electron microscope observations.It was observed that several factors can cause a distortion of the structure during sample preparation. The most obvious problem of water removal can cause swelling, shrinking, and folds. Improper removal of embedding materials, when used, can cause a loss of electron image contrast and, or structure which could hinder interpretation.

An important part of condensed matter physics in recent years has involved detailed study of inelastic interactions between swift electrons and condensed matter surfaces. Here we will review some aspects of such interactions.Surface excitations have long been recognized as dominant in determining the exchange-correlation energy of charged particles outside the surface. Properties of surface and bulk polaritons, plasmons and optical phonons in plane-bounded and spherical systems will be discussed from the viewpoint of semiclassical and quantal dielectric theory. Plasmons at interfaces between dissimilar dielectrics and in superlattice configurations will also be considered.
