Trace element fluxes during the “Anthropocene” in a large South American industrial and port area (Santos and São Vicente estuarine system, SE, Brazil)

Abstract Aim: There are few studies dealing with the biogeochemical processes occurring in small estuaries receiving high sewage loading in tropical regions. The aim of this investigation was to characterize the biogeochemical behavior of nutrients in superficial waters collected at the Iguaçu estuarine system, during specific conditions (neap tide), located at the inner sector of a heavily eutrophicated embayment (Guanabara Bay, SE Brazil). Methods Physical and chemical variables were measured in situ (pH, temperature, conductivity, salinity, total dissolved solids, transparency, dissolved oxygen), whereas suspended particulate matter, chlorophyll a, phaepigments and nutrients (carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus forms) were measured in laboratory across the mesohaline estuarine gradient. Results The Iguaçu River mouth is in a high stage of eutrophication, considering nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll a and transparency of water column. Results indicate a transition from heterotrophic conditions to autotrophic conditions, since the nutrients concentrations showed a decreasing pattern along the saline gradient, while the chlorophyll an increased over the transects. The pH values and chlorophyll : phaeopigments ratios are significantly related to the amount and quality of organic matter contents, especially at transects under strong marine influence. More than 95% of the dissolved and total nitrogen concentrations are represented by NH4+ contributions, which are related to the ammonification of organic matter contents in this region, indicating the existence of untreated sewage loads in this area. Conclusion In this study, the Iguaçu River seemed to contribute with high inputs of nutrients that support important phytoplankton production at the inner regions of the bay related to the CO2 sink and autotrophic metabolism, showing the importance of verifying the biogeochemical behaviors of nutrients in estuarine areas, even in small scale.

The geochemical composition of sediment pore water was investigated in comparison with the composition of sediment particles and surface water in an estuary within one of the most industrialized areas in Latin America (Santos-Cubatão estuarine system, SE Brazil). Pore and surface waters presented anomalously high levels of F-, NH4+, Fe, Mn and P due to two industrial point sources. In the summer, when SO4(2-)/Cl- ratios suggested an enhanced sulfate reduction, the higher dissolved levels observed in pore waters for some metals (e.g., Cu and Ni) were attributed to reductive dissolution of oxidized phases. Results evidenced that the risks of surface water concentration increase due to diffusion or advection from pore water are probably dependent on coupled influences of tidal pumping and groundwater inputs.

Abstract. High-resolution records of dust and trace element fluxes were studied in a firn core from the coastal Dronning Maud Land (cDML) in East Antarctica to identify the influence of climate variability on accumulation of these components over the past ~ 50 yr. A doubling of dust deposition was observed since 1985, coinciding with a shift in the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) index to positive values and associated increase in the wind speed. Back-trajectories showed that an increase in dust deposition is associated with the air parcels originating from north-west of the site, possibly indicating its origin from the Patagonian region. Our results suggest that while multiple processes could have influenced the increased dust formation, shift in SAM had a dominant influence on its transport. It is observed that since the 1985s the strength of easterlies increased significantly over the cDML region, which could sink air and dust material to the region that were brought by the westerlies through mass compensation. The correlation between the dust flux and δ18O records further suggest that enhanced dust flux in the firn core occurred during periods of colder atmospheric temperature, which reduced the moisture content and increased dust fall. Interestingly, the timing and amplitude of the insoluble dust peaks matched remarkably well with the fluxes of Ba, Cr, Cu, and Zn confirming that dust was the main carrier/source of atmospheric trace elements to East Antarctica during the recent past.

Columbite-(Fe) is a post-magmatic accessory mineral occurring within syenogranites and greisens from the Desemborque Pluton. The petrographic (SEM) and geochemical (EPMA and LA-ICPMS) examination of this mineral shows two distinct textural types within both the rocks, named columbite-1 and columbite-2. The columbite-1 type is characterized by zoned crystals with two stages of crystallization: i) An early Nb-rich cores with low Ta/(Ta + Nb) and Mn/(Mn + Fe) ratios (0.02–0.08 and 0.17 to 0.21 apfu, respectively), and ii) a later Ta-rich rims with higher Ta/(Ta + Nb) ratios (0.11–0.26) and similar Mn/(Mn + Fe) ratios (from 0.14 to 0.22) relative to the former cores. On the other hand, the columbite-2 type is defined by irregular crystals with patchy textures and very low Ta/(Ta + Nb) ratios (0.008–0.038) and moderate Mn/(Mn + Fe) ratios between 0.20 and 0.38. Trace element compositions of all columbite-(Fe) crystals are relatively enriched in HREEs and HFSEs; however, the columbite-2 presents higher abundances of REEs, Y, Th, U, Pb, Sc, and Sn relative to the columbite-1. This study highlights a unique hydrothermal origin for both the columbite types, but the textural relations of the columbite-2 crystals indicated that its formation is related to fluid-induced alterations of post-magmatic fluorite and/or cassiterite crystals at the final stage of the post-magmatic evolution.
