Swarming and Migration ofApis dorsataandApis laboriosaHoney Bees in India, Nepal and BhutanThe migratory open air nestingApis dorsataandApis laboriosahoneybees migrate at least twice a year. DNA genotyping showed that the same swarms return to their natal nesting sites. We examined 23 nesting sites in Nepal, India and Bhutan, on which 587 colonies ofA. dorsataandA. laboriosanested. The results showed that the frequency of the periodic mass flights (PMF) performed by the colonies is a good indicator of the status of current colony performance. During the swarming period, both,A. dorsataandA. laboriosaissue several swarms. In some colonies, so many bees swarmed out, that those remaining in the maternal colonies did not cover the combs. After the rest of the brood emerged, all the bees of such colonies abscond during the swarming period. Thus, absconding appeared in results of total out swarming. The swarms do not migrate directly to the seasonal alternative nesting sites, but establish new colonies in the areas around. After environmental conditions deteriorate, all the bees with their queens abscond and migrate to alternate seasonal nesting sites. The next season, the swarms do not return to their original reproductive natal sites, but to those sites they occupied the previous season lately, where from they absconded.

Nosema ceranae is a large contributing factor to the most recent decline in honey bee health worldwide. Developing new alternative treatments against N. ceranae is particularly pressing because there are few treatment options available and therefore the risk of increased antibiotic resistance is quite high. Recently, natural products have demonstrated to be a promising avenue for finding new effective treatments against N. ceranae. We evaluated the effects of propolis extract of stingless bee, Tetrigona apicalis and chito-oligosaccharide (COS) on giant honey bees, Apis dorsata, experimentally infected with N. ceranae to determine if these treatments could improve the health of the infected individuals. Newly emerged Nosema-free bees were individually inoculated with 106N. ceranae spores per bee. We fed infected and control bees the following treatments consisting of 0%, 50%, propolis extracts, 0 ppm and 0.5 ppm COS in honey solution (w/v). Propolis extracts and COS caused a significant increase in trehalose levels in hemolymph, protein contents, survival rates and acini diameters of the hypopharyngeal glands in infected bees. Our results suggest that propolis and COS could improve the health of infected bees. Further research is needed to determine the underlying mechanisms responsible for the improved health of the infected bees.

Local wisdom is one of the characteristics national culture that deserves to be explored and developed in the future. Honey production is carried out by maintaining traditional nest making that utilizes natural materials are local wisdom that is still applied. The purpose of this study is to (1) reveal the local wisdom in natural forest honey management, (2) the amount of natural forest honey produced by the community from periau using tikung techniques in the area of Siawan Belida, Nanga Tuan Village, Bunut Hilir Subdistrict, Kapuas Hulu Regency. The method used a survey with interview techniques, the selection of respondents are choosing all Nanga Tuan periau. The results of the study revealing local wisdom in preserving natural honey bees with tikung techniques in the Siawan Belida area, namely; tikung, making tikung, selecting trees for installation of tikung, agreement on division of territory in lakes (suak), sanctions for tree destroyers, sanctions for tikung hives burglars, pre-harvesting ceremonies, conditions of harvesting natural forest honey, harvesting honey bees process, honey treatment after harvesting at home. Tree preservation efforts of tikung honey bee techniques based on local wisdom, including; stipulation of forest lake areas in the management of tikung honey, types of feed for Apis dorsata bees. The amount of natural forest honey is 5- 8 tons / year with planting done twice / year.Keywords : local wisdom, natural honey bees, Siawan Belida, tikung techniques

The study was conducted in Batulanteh District, Sumbawa regency, Sumbawa Island, West Nusa Tenggara, which is aimed to reveal the knowledge of the Samawa people on the diversity of useful plants and their uses. It documented 111 plant species, in which 47.5% are used as traditional medicine. Also, the sudy found that wild honey bees (Apis dorsata) is having a conspicuous association with plants in producing natural honey, which plays an important role in the local economy. The interviews with selected respondents showed that the Samawa people totally understand the importance of forest conservation in relation with the existence of the honey bees’ life.
