Currently spring forage crops are used to manage late calving cows on the dairy platform, protect spring pasture from pugging damage, and allow the animals to feed on a mix of brassica and pasture to transition to a pasture-based diet. In addition, like winter forage crops, they could contribute considerable water quality contaminants via surface runoff. However, it may be possible to manage farms without spring forage crops. Two Southland dairy farms were used to show: 1) flowweighted mean concentrations of many water quality contaminants in surface runoff from a spring-grazed forage crop were similar to those found in studies of winter-grazed forage crops; and 2) that, using growth rate data for 2007-2012, in no year was the modelled forage crop beneficial from a feed supply perspective, and in all years the farms had similar financial performances and fewer feed deficits under all-grass management. Hence, good pasture management (e.g. avoiding treading damage using a stand-off pad and short grazing times) may negate the need for a spring forage crop, decreasing contaminant losses while not impairing farm profitability. Abstract Shrimp farms cause environmental impacts in coastal ecosystems, compromising water quality by discharging effluents rich in nutrients and organic matter. The impacts of shrimp farming are often investigated by the unit effect of a farm. In this study, a harvest time series generator is used to analyze the impact of the synergistic effect of several shrimp farm harvests in a tropical estuary. Two other scenarios with harvests concentrated during spring and neap tides were also analyzed, showing waste management techniques that can reduce the impact of shrimp aquaculture on coastal areas. A hydrodynamic circulation and water quality model were implemented to evaluate the dispersion of pollutants using different discharge combinations. The harvesting scenarios were compared to a scenario without the activity. Results indicate that shrimp farming is not the main anthropogenic source of pollution in the estuary studied. There were no significant differences in the average and maximum variations in nutrient and organic matter concentrations between the different management techniques.

In the UK, the River Tame catchment covers an area of about 1,400 km2 and forms the northern portion of the Birmingham Conurbation. In the 1960s, wet weather conditions in Birmingham could result in the total depletion of oxygen in the River Trent below the Tame confluence. Construction of a system of purification lakes at Lea Marston, below the major polluting discharges, was completed in the early 1980s. Today, the operation of the Lea Marston Lakes significantly improves the quality of the Tame. However, wet weather pollution episodes in the Tame continues to have a severe impact on water quality in the Trent and put major fisheries at risk. This paper reports on the outcome of an integrated environmental impact and cost-benefit assessment modelling study into the future strategic management of the Lea Marston Lakes. The study demonstrated that the Lea Marston Lakes provide an economically justifiable method for reducing the water quality impact of the Birmingham conurbation and as a result will continue to be operated.
