The increasing demand by international customers for high-quality shrimp products has led to the introduction of various certificates of traceability intended to validate quality products in Vietnam. The Vietnamese good agricultural practices (VietGAP), better known in aquaculture as the Vietnamese good aquaculture practices, has emerged as a reliable certificate for small-scale farmers and a prerequisite for international certification. This study investigates factors affecting applications for VietGAP by small-scale shrimp farmers in Vietnam. Cost-benefit analysis and binary logistic regression approaches were used to categorise shrimp farms with and without VietGAP certification. Findings indicated that while the adoption of VietGAP raised production costs by 14.5 %, it could increase net profit by up to 22 %. The increase in net profit is from increased productivity and antibiotics and chemical-free products in shrimp farming, helped fetch better prices. The results also revealed three factors that positively influenced the farmers’ decision to acquire VietGAP; education, farm size, and production system. Shrimp farmers with longer schooling years, larger farms, and those who possess cooperative/farming cluster membership are more likely to acquire VietGAP certification. The results imply that the VietGAP certification should be better promoted to cooperative production forms of farming, by strengthening the schooling year of farmers and increasing awareness of VietGAP certification to farmers who operate shrimp farms of 5,000–9,000 m2.

Aquaculture is currently one of the fastest growing food production systems globally, and shrimp is considered one of the most highly valued products. Our study area is the lower Jaguaribe River sub-basin (LJRSB), located in the northeastern part of Ceará in Brazil. The aquaculture activity in this area began in the early 1990s and is currently one of the largest shrimp producers in Brazil. This study generated a spatial-temporal analysis of vegetation index and land use and land cover (LULC) using remote sensing images from Landsat satellites processed using geographic information systems (GIS). The findings showed an increase in the water bodies class where shrimp farms are found. In addition, to help us discuss the results, data from the Global Surface Water Explorer was also used to understand this change throughout intra and interannual water variability. Besides shrimp farms’ intensification, agricultural areas in the LJRSB also increased, mainly in the irrigated perimeter lands (IPLs), causing a loss in the Caatinga native vegetation. In summary, over recent years, significant changes have been noticeable in the LJRSB coastal region, caused by an increase in shrimp farms mainly located on the Jaguaribe River margins, destroying the native riparian forest.

Microbial load in terms of Total Coliform (TC) and Fecal Coliform (FC) were documented in the water of a shrimp culture farm at Malancha region of North 24 Parganas for a period of 36 years (1984-2019). The region receives the wastewater from the city of Kolkata. A steady hike in the microbial load (comprising of both total and fecal coliform) is noticed. The primary reason behind this rise of the microbial load is the run-off from the nearby landmasses that brings various types of wastes in the shrimp farm under investigation. The sustainability of shrimp farms in this region is under question due to the huge microbial load as revealed from the output of NAR.

Shrimp farming has been associated with eutrophication due to the generation of effluents enriched with organic matter and nutrients. Phosphorus (P) distribution was investigated in the Coreaú River Estuary (NE Brazil) using surface sediments and sediment cores. In surface sediments, total P concentrations ranged from 349.2 to 633.5 μg g-1 (mean = 465.2) and were about three times lower than those of other Brazilian estuaries impacted by larger shrimp cultures. The predominance of P forms in surface sediments followed the sequence: iron-bound P (Fe-P, 30%) > organic-P (Org-P, 23%) > exchangeable-P (Exch-P, 20%) > authigenic apatite (Ca-P, 15%) > detrital apatite (De-P, 12%). No significant correlation was observed between Exch-P and Fe-P (r = 0.389; p < 0.05). Highest Exch-P and Org-P concentrations and a strong correlation between these forms were found (r = 0.706, p < 0.05), suggesting the same sources of P and organic matter. Total P accumulation along the cores was 10,211 and 15,632 μg g-1 at the estuary mouth (T1) and the upper estuary (T2), respectively. T1 exhibited the predominant sequence: De-P (36%) > Ca-P (25%) > Fe-P (22%) > Exch-P (9%) > Org-P (7%); whereas T2 showed: Fe-P (31%) > De-P (23%) > Org-P (21%) > Ca-P (17%) > Exch-P (9%). Phosphorus depositional history points to P accumulation episodes at the end of the 1980 and mid-1990, coinciding with increasing urbanization and the beginning or maximum activity of the shrimp farms. Despite the low total P concentrations, the proportions of the labile forms Exch-P, Fe-P and Org-P in surface sediments indicated a trend to a high potential for eutrophication.
