The Poyang Lake Watershed (PLW) is regarded as an air temperature moderator, as well as a wind energy, food resources and good habitat in the Jiangxi Province, People’s Republic of China. However, with the increasing of anthropogenic disturbance on PLW, there are few studies focused on the effects of human activities on microbial composition in Poyang Lake. In the present study, a high-throughput sequencing method was used to identify the microbial composition in water and sludge in Dahuchi (DHC, sub-lake of Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve), Shahu (SH, sub-lake of Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve), Nanhu (NH, sub-lake out of Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve), Zhelinhu (ZLH, artificial reservoir), Sixiahu (SXH, sub-lake artificially isolated from Poyang Lake) and Qianhu (QH, urban lake). Results of the present study illustrated the various bacterial diversity between different lakes, for example, at the phylum level, Actinobacteria and Cyanobacteria showed low abundance in water samples of ZLH and QH, and high abundance in DHC. In addition, anthropogenic disturbance and human activities decreased the abundance of probiotic bacteria (Actinobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Chloroflexi and Acidobacteria) and increased the abundance of pathogenic bacteria (Acinetobacter, Aeromonas and Noviherbaspirillum). The enrichment of pathogenic bacteria in polluted lakes, in turn, may cause potential threats to human health.

At present, the traffic pressure of Nanchang city, the capital of Jiangxi province, is increasing. The increasing demand for the construction of river crossing channel requires strengthening the research on the flow characteristics of the tail reach of Ganjiang River where Nanchang is located. In this paper, the south section of Nanchang city at the tail end of Ganjiang River was taken as the research object. By applying the plane two-dimensional flow mathematical model as the technical means, and using the latest measured topographic and hydrological data in 2020 to verify the model, the flow movement characteristics of the studied river section were calculated and analysed. The results show that the water surface gradient is slow, the flow field is smooth, the flow velocity is small, and the sediment is easy to deposit in this reach, which is easy to threaten the flood control of the river section.

A new species of Tabularia, Tabularia sinensis, is described from the inland Poyang Lake (Jiangxi Province), the largest lake in China. The description is based on light and scanning electron microscope observations of valve and girdle elements. Given the diversity of forms in the genus, the relationships and status of the genus was investigated in the context of the other known species in the genus and to ascertain if Tabularia, as originally circumscribed, remains monophyletic.

Rhodeus flaviventris, a new species, is described from the Le-An River, a tributary flowing into Poyang Lake in the Yangtze River basin, in Jiangxi Province, China. It is distinguished from all congeners by the combination of characters: branched dorsal-fin rays 9 (9–10); branched anal-fin rays 9 (9–10); longest simple rays of dorsal and anal fins thick and stiff; longitudinal scale series 33–34; transverse scale series 11 (10–12); pored scales 4–7; vertebrae 32–34; spindle-shaped eggs with major axis of 3.1–3.7 mm; color pattern of nuptial males (iris yellowish, belly yellow, central part of caudal fin orange, dorsal and anal fins with reddish-orange stripe).

Water quality of Poyang Lake is facing serious threats with the quick development of Jiangxi Province. Water quality control and pollution prevention of Poyang Lake have become important problems set before Jiangxi Province. To keep good water quality of Poyang Lake, a series of pollution-preventing strategies were studied. In order to prevent point source (PS) pollution, industrial types and layout, management measures and production technique should be improved. Strategies to prevent non-point source (NPS) pollution include four aspects. First is to transform part of NPS pollution to PS pollution by rationally laying out industry system. Second is to construct spatially harmonious and reasonable landscape pattern. Third is to reform conventional agricultural production by using advanced chemical and biological technologies. Fourth is to carry out Best Management Practices (BMPs) and Low-impact Development (LID) by learning and innovation.

China’s grassland has been undergoing rapid changes in the recent past owing to increased climate variability and a shift in grassland management strategy driven by a series of ecological restoration projects. This study investigated the spatio-temporal dynamics of Inner Mongolia grassland, the main grassland region in China and part of the Eurasia Steppe, to detect the interactive nature of climate, ecosystems and society. Land-use and landscape patterns for the period from 1985 to 2009 were analysed based on TM- and MODIS-derived land-use data. Net Primary Productivity (NPP) estimated by using the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach model was used to assess the growth status of grassland. Furthermore, the factors related to the dynamics of grassland were analysed from the perspectives of two driving factors, climate change and human activities. The results indicated that higher temperatures and lower precipitation may generally have contributed to grassland desertification, particularly in arid regions. During the period from 1985 to 2000, a higher human population and an increase in livestock numbers were the major driving forces responsible for the consistent decrease in NPP and a relatively fragmented landscape. From 2000 to 2009, the implementation of effective ecological restoration projects has arrested the grassland deterioration in some ecologically fragile regions. However, a rapid growth of livestock numbers has sparked new degradation onnon-degraded or lightly degraded grassland, which was initially neglected by these projects. In spite of some achievement in grassland restoration, China should take further steps to develop sustainable management practices for climate adaptation and economic development to bring lasting benefits.

18 strains of Bacillus mucilaginosus were sampled from Poyang Lake area of Jiangxi province in China . Morphology and physio-biochemical characteristics and desilication ability on bauxite were studied. The results showed that all strains are rods and produced spores from elliptical to circular, while strains of P8、P11、P15 are short rod. Gram reaction of 18 strains are negative. The strains can use nitrites and ammonium salt as nitrogen source, and survived in the nitrogen free medium. P4、P3 showed strong desilication ability, compared to blank control the content of soluble SiO2 increased to 4.57、4.13 times respectively; P2、 P7、P9 could tolerate 4% NaCl and were growing well at the temperature ranging from 25~35 °C.
