AbstractThis report examines the performance of a high-speed MDM transmission system supporting four nondegenerate spatial modes at 10 Gb/s. The analysis adopts the NRZ modulation format to evaluate the system performance in terms of a minimum power required (PN) and the nonlinear threshold power (PTH) at a BER of 10−9. The receiver sensitivity, optical signal-to-noise ratio, and the maximum transmission distance were investigated using the direct detection by employing a multimode erbium-doped amplifier (MM-EDFA). It was found that by properly optimizing the MM-EDFA, the system performance can significantly be improved.

The correlation and power distribution of intercore crosstalk (ICXT) field components of weakly coupled multicore fibers (WC-MCFs) are important properties that determine the statistics of the ICXT and ultimately impact the performance of WC-MCF optical communication systems. Using intensive numerical simulation of the coupled mode equations describing ICXT of a single-mode WC-MCF with intracore birefringence and linear propagation, we assess the mean, correlation, and power distribution of the four ICXT field components of unmodulated polarization-coupled homogeneous and quasi-homogeneous WC-MCFs with a single interfering core in a wide range of birefringence conditions and power distribution among the field components at the interfering core input. It is shown that, for homogeneous and quasi-homogeneous WC-MCFs, zero mean uncorrelated ICXT field components with similar power levels are observed for birefringence correlation length and birefringence beat length in the ranges of 0.5m,10m and 0.1m,10m, respectively, regardless of the distribution of power between the four field components at the interfering core input.

Abstract Ring resonator is an essential element in silicon integrated circuit, it is widely used as filter, wavelength multiplexer and switch in single-mode operation regime. As the rapid development of mode division multiplexing (MDM) technique, ring resonator that can process multi-mode signals simultaneously and uniformly is highly desired. However, the severe modal dispersion makes identical transmission for different modes very hard. In this paper, by breaking through the limitation of conventional multi-mode manipulation design with evanescent coupling or mode interference, we propose and demonstrate a multi-mode ring resonator (MMRR) inspired by the free space geometric optics. Arbitrary number of supporting modes can be achieved by simply widening the waveguide width. For proof-of-concept demonstration, an MMRR supporting four modes is fabricated with uniform transmittance. Furthermore, architecture of cascaded four MMRRs are also demonstrated experimentally.
