AbstractA remarkable theorem of Joris states that a function f is $$C^\infty $$ C ∞ if two relatively prime powers of f are $$C^\infty $$ C ∞ . Recently, Thilliez showed that an analogous theorem holds in Denjoy–Carleman classes of Roumieu type. We prove that a division property, equivalent to Joris’s result, is valid in a wide variety of ultradifferentiable classes. Generally speaking, it holds in all dimensions for non-quasianalytic classes. In the quasianalytic case we have general validity in dimension one, but we also get validity in all dimensions for certain quasianalytic classes.

Motion of particles with air resistance (e.g. horizontal and inclined throwing) plays an important role in many technological processes in agriculture, wood industry and several other fields. Although, the basic equation of motion of this problem is well known, however, the solutions for practical applications are not sufficient. In this article working diagrams were developed for quick estimation of the throwing distance and the terminal velocity. Approximate solution procedures are presented in closed form with acceptable error. The working diagrams provide with arbitrary initial conditions in dimensionless form of general validity.

AbstractA method for obtaining the exact solution for the total variation denoising problem of piecewise constant images in dimension one is presented. The validity of the algorithm relies on some results concerning the behavior of the solution when the parameter λ in front of the fidelity term varies. Albeit some of them are well-known in the community, here they are proved with simple techniques based on qualitative geometrical properties of the solutions.

Abstract Background This study focuses on the application of Provan and Kenis’ modes of network governance to the specific field of public healthcare networks, extending the framework to an analysis of systems in which networks are involved. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyze and compare the governance of two cancer networks in two Italian regions that underwent system reconfiguration processes due to reforms in the healthcare system. Methods A qualitative study of two clinical networks in the Italian healthcare system was conducted. The sample for interviews included representatives of the regional administration (n = 4), network coordinators (n = 6), and general and clinical directors of health organizations involved in the two networks (n = 25). Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. Results Our study shows that healthcare system reforms have a limited impact on network governance structures. In fact, strong inertial tendencies characterize networks, especially network administrative organization models (NAO). Networks tend to find their own balance with respect to the trade-offs analyzed using a mix of formal and informal ties. Our study confirms the general validity of Provan and Kenis’ framework and shows how other specific factors and contingencies may affect the possibility that cancer networks find positive equilibria between competing needs of inclusivity and efficiency, internal and external legitimacy, and stability and flexibility. It also shows how networks react to external changes. Conclusions Our study shows the importance of considering three factors and contingencies that may affect network effectiveness: a) the importance of looking at network governance modes not in isolation, but in relationship to the governance of regional systems; b) the influence of a specific network’s governance structure on the network’s ability to respond to tensions and to achieve its goals; and c) the need to take into account the role of professionals in network governance.

This paper examines the use of computer simulation methods to streamline the process of picking materials within warehouse logistics. The article describes the use of a genetic algorithm to optimize the storage of materials in shelving positions, in accordance with the method of High-Runner Strategy. The goal is to minimize the time needed for picking. The presented procedure enables the creation of a software tool in the form of an optimization model that can be used for the needs of the optimization of warehouse logistics processes within various types of production processes. There is a defined optimization problem in the form of a resistance function, which is of general validity. The optimization is represented using the example of 400 types of material items in 34 categories, stored in six rack rows. Using a simulation model, a comparison of a normal and an optimized state is realized, while a time saving of 48 min 36 s is achieved. The mentioned saving was achieved within one working day. However, the application of an approach based on the use of optimization using a genetic algorithm is not limited by the number of material items or the number of categories and shelves. The acquired knowledge demonstrates the application possibilities of the genetic algorithm method, even for the lowest levels of enterprise logistics, where the application of this approach is not yet a matter of course but, rather, a rarity.

Recent experimental results suggest that negation is particularly challenging for children with reading difficulties. This study looks at how young poor readers, speakers of Mandarin Chinese, comprehend affirmative and negative sentences as compared with a group of age-matched typical readers. Forty-four Chinese children were tested with a truth value judgment task. The results reveal that negative sentences were harder to process than affirmative ones, irrespective of the distinction between poor and typical readers. Moreover, poor readers performed worse than typical readers in comprehending sentences, regardless of whether they were affirmative or negative sentences. We interpret the results as (a) confirming the two-step simulation hypothesis, based on the result that the difficulty in processing negation has a general validity (persisting in pragmatically felicitous contexts), and (b) disconfirming that negation, as far as behavioral data are concerned, can be used as a reliable linguistic predictor of reading difficulties.

Human embryos from the 2-cell to the morula stage, obtained by in vitro fertilization, were incubated with [3H]thymidine or [3H]uridine so as to achieve labelling of all replicating nuclear DNA and the newly synthesized RNA, respectively. The label was localized in different structural components of developing nucleoli using electron microscopic autoradiography. Careful study of the relationship between the structural pattern and nucleic acid distribution made it possible to define four stages of embryonic nucleologenesis. Homogeneous nuclear precursors (i) consist of nucleolar matrix elements appearing as filaments of 3 nm thickness, (ii) do not contain recently replicated DNA and (iii) lack RNA synthetic activity. Penetration of DNA into these bodies is a key event leading to their transformation into heterogeneous nucleolar precursors. In addition to the 3 nm matrix filaments, two types of 5 nm fibrillar components can be recognized in them. The denser type contains DNA and is the site of nucleolar RNA synthesis, while the more loosely arranged 5 nm fibrils are not labelled with [3H]thymidine and apparently represent the newly produced pre-rRNA detached from the transcribing rDNA filament. Compact fibrillogranular nucleoli are characterized by the first appearance of the granular component and reduction of the nontranscribing part of the fibrillar component, both indicating the activation of the machinery for rRNA processing. Finally, the granular component is most evident in reticulated nucleoli, occupying mostly the inner parts of their nucleolonema, while the transcription sites tend to be located at the nucleolar periphery. Our findings advocate a unique concept of embryonic nucleologenesis, different from any other nucleolar event during the cell cycle of differentiated cells. This developmental pattern is characterized by a gradual activation of rRNA synthesis and processing, mediated by progressive association of rDNA and, later on, the newly formed pre-rRNA with pre-existing nucleolar matrix elements that are originally topically separated from nucleolar organizer regions. This model may have a general validity in early animal embryos despite some interspecies variability in the timing of individual steps and resulting structural peculiarities.

Introduction:Cell division cycle protein 6 (CDC6) plays critical roles in DNA replication and carcinogenesis. The biological significance of the CDC6 G1321A polymorphism (V441I, rs13706) on cervical carcinogenesis is still unknown. Here, we examined the potential influence of this polymorphism on cell proliferation and the individual's susceptibility to cervical cancer.Methods:We genotyped the CDC6 G1321A polymorphism in 87 cervical cancer cases and 110 healthy female subjects. Unconditional logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between the genotypes and the risk of cervical cancer. The BrdU incorporation assay was applied to analyze the effect of this polymorphism on cell proliferation.Results:Compared with the GG homozygotes, the cervical cancer risk was significantly reduced in the individuals with the heterozygous AG genotype (odds ratio [OR], 0.53; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.28-0.98; P = 0.042) or the homozygous AA genotype (OR, 0.29; 95% CI, 0.09-0.89; P = 0.030). Further stratified analyses showed that the decreased risk of cervical cancer was more evident among younger subjects (≤44 years old) with the AG or AA genotypes (OR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.21-0.92; P = 0.029 and OR, 0.12; 95% CI, 0.03-0.61; P = 0.010, respectively). The BrdU incorporation assay showed that 293T cells transfected with CDC6-441I (1321A) had a lower proliferation rate in comparison with those transfected with CDC6-441V (1321G), although the difference did not reach statistical significance at the 0.05 level.Conclusions:The CDC6 G1321A polymorphism may contribute to the risk of cervical cancer. Further studies with more subjects and in diverse ethnic populations are necessary to confirm the general validity of our findings.
