Chapter 3 based on fieldwork in Mau and Gorakhpur provides a rich description of everyday communalism and communal riots in 2005 and 2007, respectively. In Mau, incidents of everyday communalism have a distinct socio-cultural form visible in the confrontation around the Bharat-Milap ceremony. But, fieldwork revealed that the reasons lie in underlying tensions from the desire to protect religio-cultural practices, economic distress due to decline of the weaving industry, heightened political consciousness, and the role of the mafia within the Hindu and Muslim community, which the BJP has been able to exploit and engineer the 2005 riots. In Gorakhpur, communalism has a more distinctly political colour, the result of sustained religion-based mobilization by Yogi Adityanath and his HYV responsible for creating communal polarization, tension, and incidents culminating in the 2007 riots. In both towns a characteristic is mobilization to saffronize the Dalits taking them away from the BSP.

Thalassemia is one of the commonest inherited diseases in Bangladesh. The birth of a thalassemic child places considerable strain, not only on the affected child and its family but also on the community and the nation at large. To reduce the burden of the society and to reduce the disease incidence by providing genetic counseling, detection of carrier is important. The present study evaluates the role of ‘Naked Eye Single Tube Red Cell Osmotic Fragility Test’ (NESTROFT) in detecting ß-thalassemia trait. The current study is a cross sectional study done during the period of September 2008 to August 2009. The study subjects were sibs, parents and relatives of thalassemia patients of age more than 1 year attending Pediatric department of Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Sample size was 50. Here subjects with lowered osmotic fragility test were detected and later on Hb- electrophoresis was done. All the data were recorded and analyzed by SPSS programme. The Sensitivity, Specificity and predictive value of positive and negative tests were computed and they were 92.6%, 80%, 92.6% and 80% respectively. False positive cases were found. The present study found NESTROFT to be both sensitive and reasonably specific and of high negative predictive value. However, multicenter study with large sample is needed to recommend NESTROFT as a single screening test for detection of ß-thalassemia trait.J Bangladesh Coll Phys Surg 2018; 36(4): 145-152

Mutation spectrum varies significantly in different parts and different ethnic groups of India. Social factors such as preference to marry within the community and among 1st degree relatives (consanguinity) play an important role in impeding the gene pool of the disease within the community and so in society by and large. The present paper discusses the role of consanguinity in profiling of beta thalassemia mutation, and thus the approach for prenatal screening and prevention based awareness programme. Clinically diagnosed 516 cases of beta thalassemia were screened at molecular level. A detailed clinical Proforma was recorded with the information of origin of the family, ethnicity, and consanguinity. The present study reports that subjects originating from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and Jharkhand have c.92+5G>C and c.124_127delTTCT mutation as the commonest mutation compared to the subjects hailing from Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and Nepal where sickle mutation was found more common. In 40 consanguineous unions more common and specific beta mutations with higher rate of homozygosity have been reported. This consanguinity-based data helps not only in deciding target oriented prenatal diagnostic strategies but also in objective based awareness programmes in prevention of thalassemia major birth.

Production of crops is greatly influenced by weather phenomena and therefore any change in climate will have major effects on crop yield and productivity. Using NYD analysis for prediction of crop yield on seasonal basis, it has been observed that maximum temperature may cause the reduction in yield of rice in Eastern Uttar Pradesh by 1.0 to 1.1% per ha by 2020. Similarly, minimum temperature may decrease the yield of rice by 1.5 to 1.9% per ha in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. From future scenario of rainfall it was observed that south-west monsoonal rainfall would be the major factor for controlling the yield of rice. The role of maximum temperature for wheat production in Bihar state is more significant as compared to Eastern Uttar Pradesh. The model predicts that wheat yield may decrease by 5-6% in Bihar state due to increase in maximum temperature by the end of 2080 whereas this decrement in Eastern Uttar Pradesh may be 1.5-2.0%.
