Abstract The Bergman method of solving boundary-value problems by means of particular solutions of the differential equation, which are constructed without reference to the boundary conditions, is applied to the problem of stability of thin elastic plates of an arbitrary simply connected shape and subject to any admissible boundary conditions. A direct method is presented for the construction of particular solutions that is applicable to both anisotropic and isotropic plates. Previous results of M. Z. Krzywoblocki for isotropic plates are obtained in a simple manner.

Recently Cox and Boxer determined natural frequencies and mode shapes of flexural vibration of uniform rectangular isotropic plates, that have free edges and pinpoint supports at the four corners. In their analysis, they obtain approximate solutions of the differential equation through the use of finite difference expressions and an electronic digital computer. In the present note, the frequency expression and mode shape for a square plate, vibrating at the lowest natural frequency, are determined by considerations of energy. The values obtained are compared with those given in reference.

<p>Fibreglass-reinforced polyester (GRP) is the most widely used composite material in the ship building industry and requires careful study in point of mechanical characteristics. This article presents the collective experience related to behaviour in different situations of GRP loading. We considered three cases manufacturing for GRP: layers with mechanical characteristics for each layer, composite (the material is considered isotropic but with layers and same mechanical properties for all layers), and isotropic plates.</p>

In the present study, a 5th order shear deformation theory (5th OSDT) is presented for free vibration analysis of simply supported thick isotropic plates. Governing equations and boundary conditions are evaluated using the concept of virtual work. Numerical results for free vibration analysis include the effects of side to thickness and plate aspect ratios for simply supported thick isotropic plates. Non-dimensional bending mode frequencies, non-dimensional thickness shear mode frequencies and non-dimensional thickness stretch mode frequencies are obtained. Closed form analytical solutions for simply supported isotropic thick plates subjected to single sinusoidal distributed loads are obtained for comparison purpose. The problems considered in this study are solved using MATLAB software. Non-dimensional bending frequencies and non-dimensional thickness shear mode frequencies obtained through the 5th OSDT match well with the exact analytical and exponential shear deformation theory (ESDT) results. Further, the non-dimensional thickness stretch mode frequencies are found to be imaginary.
