Hot compression tests of AZ61 magnesium alloy were performed on gleeble1500D at strain rate ranged in 0.01~1s-1 and deformation temperature 350~400°C.The results show that the flow stress and microstructures strongly depend on the deformation temperature and the strain rate. When the temperature was reduced and the strain rate was enhanced, the area after dynamic recrystallization was enhanced, and the average dynamically recrystallied grain size reduce. But the dynamically recrystallied grain size was not well-proportioned. In this paper the 350°C×1s-1 was suggested.

Microstructures of metal micro parts after microforming at elevated temperatures must be evaluated due to mechanical properties depend on average grain size. In this work, the effects of specimen diameter on the microstructure and microhardness of a hot-extruded AZ31B magnesium alloy were studied. Obvious size effect on microstructure and microhardness of the alloy could be observed. The size effects could be explained by strain distribution and dislocation density differences between the two kinds of specimens.

Focus of this paper is to model the plastic forming behavior of AA6082, in order to develop the numerical FE analysis of the friction stir welding processes and the simulation of subsequent forming processes. During the friction stir welding process, the temperatures reached are until 500 °C and have a fundamental role for the correct performance of the process so the material data has to show a temperature dependency. Because of the tool rotation a strain rate sensitivity of the material has to be respected as well. In this context, the general material characteristics of AA6082 were first identified for different stress states. For the uniaxial state the standard PuD-Al used in the automotive industry was applied, for the shear state the ASTM B831-05 was used and for biaxial states the ISO 16842 was exploited. To characterize the plastic flow behavior of the AA6082 at elevated temperatures tensile tests were performed according to DIN EN ISO 6892-2 from 25 °C until 500 °C with a strain rate from 0.1 s-1up to 6.5 s-1.

The high temperature compressive tests of squeeze casting ZK60 magnesium alloy with temperatures of 573-723K and strain rate in the range of 0.001-1s-1 were performed on Gleeble-1500D thermal simulator testing machine. Optical microscopy was performed to elaborate on the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) grain growth. TEM findings indicate that mechanical twinning, dislocation slip, and dynamic recrystallization are the materials typical deformation features. Variations of flow behavior with deformation temperature as well as strain rate were analyzed. Analysis of the flow behavior and microstructure observations indicated that flow localization was observed at lower temperature and higher strain rates, which should be avoided during mechanical processing. Dynamic recrystallization occurred at higher temperature and moderate strain rates, which improved the ductility of the material. The optimum hot working conditions for ZK60 alloy were suggested.

Microstructural evolution and flow behavior of twin-roll cast AZ41 magnesium alloy during hot compression were characterized by employing deformation temperature of 300°C, 350°C and 400°C, and strain rate ranging from 10-3 to 10-2 s -1. When compressed at different temperature (300°C, 350°C and 400°C) and strain rate (10-3 and 10-2 s -1) all stress strain curves showed a flow softening behavior before strained to 0.51 due to dynamic recrystallization, even though concurrent twinning was quite active. Twinning contributed to the flow hardening behavior appeared during the end of hot compression (ε > 0.51) at a strain rate of 10-2 s -1 and elevated temperature (300°C, 350°C and 400°C) in spite of the softening effect of concurrently occurred dynamic recrystallization. TEM image showed that discontinuous recrystallization occurred when deformed at elevated temperature as high as 400°C and the strain rate ranging from 10-2 to 10-3 s -1. It is suggested that dislocation slip, twinning and recrystallization develop in a cyclic mode from initial stage to the end of hot compression.
