This paper provides the possible application of the fuzzy approaches in fault detection and isolation area for a class of complex industrial processes with uncertain interval parameters. The main idea of fuzzy fault detection and isolation is to build a model of a diagnosis procedures, using rules-based Fuzzy Expert System, capable to minimize false alarms enhance detectability and isolability and minimize detection time by hardware implementation to improve reliability, safety and global efficiency. This paper illustrates an alternative implementation to the compression systems supervision task using the basic principles of model-based fault detection and isolation associated with the self-tuning of surge measurements with subsequent appropriate corrective actions. Using a combination of fuzzy modeling approach makes it possible to devise a fault-isolation scheme based on the given incidence matrix. Simulation results of a fault detection and isolation for a compression system are provided, which illustrate the relevance of the proposed FDI method.

The paper illustrates the design and the implementation of a Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) system to a rotary machine like a multishaft centrifugal compressor. A model-free approach, that is, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA), has been employed to solve the fault detection issue. For the fault isolation purpose structured residuals have been adopted while an adaptive threshold has been designed in order to detect and to isolate the faults. To prove the goodness of the proposed FDI system, historical data of a nitrogen centrifugal compressor employed in a refinery plant are considered. Tests results show that detection and isolation of single as well as multiple faults are successfully achieved.

In this paper, a fault detection and isolation approach using fuzzy logic is described for on-line analysis of problems occurring in anaerobic digestion processes. The measurements available on the process are preprocessed to build a vector of fault residuals indicating the magnitude of the problems. This vector is classified into a prespecified category (i.e., a class) which is a state of the system, according to discrimination fuzzy rules. Three different types of classes were defined in a hierarchical structure : sensors faults, sub-process faults and process faults. This approach was developed to handle in real time both technical and biological problems. Demonstration of the practical interest of this study was made using real life experiments and large improvement of the reliability and safety of the process was obtained, thus optimizing the overall wastewater treatment.

In our previous work, moving pattern based modeling and control was proposed. In this paper, based on our previous work, a fault detection method based on moving pattern is proposed, and interval number is still used to measure moving pattern. Based on the history operating condition data, moving pattern based dynamic model is formed. The model gives the pattern class to which operating condition patterns belong, and whether the fault is happened. In addition, the nearest neighbor pattern and secondary nearest neighbor pattern are defined in this paper. At last, the validity of the proposed fault detection method is verified by the practical operating condition pattern data of the sintering process of Anyang Steel and Iron Works.
