Species composition of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi differ in semi-natural and intensively managed pastures in an isolated oceanic island (Terceira, Azores)

A sand dune area in Santa Catarina, Brazil, was surveyed every 3 months to determine species composition and seasonal variation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi populations associated with Spartina ciliata. Spores from 12 fungal species were recovered. Overall species richness was 5.9. A plot of rank versus abundance provided an indirect measure of the structure of the fungal community and showed a linear relationship among species. A mean of 298 spores/100 g soil were extracted from sand dune samples, with Acaulospora scrobiculata forming 50.9% of the total population. The most frequently recovered species at all sampling dates were Gigaspora albida, Scutellospora weresubiae, A. scrobiculata, and one undescribed Scutellospora species. Spore abundance ranged from 0 to 69 spores/100 g soil for all species except A. scrobiculata (60–247 spores/100 g). Spore abundance of each species did not vary significantly through the season. However, several general trends were observed. The number of spores of Glomus constrictum, Glomus etunicatum, and Acaulospora sp. (No. 2) was maximal in winter, whereas that of Gigaspora albida peaked in spring. Species composition and richness of arbuscular fungi in Brazilian dunes appear to be similar to those in sand dunes along the Atlantic coast of the United States. In the year 2003, the occurrence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) of the phylum <i>Glomeromycota</i> in cultivated and uncultivated soils of the Lubuskie province was investigated. The occurrence of AMF was examined based on 56 root and rhizosphere soils collected under 7 species of cultivated and uncultivated plants growing in 28 localities. Spores of AMF were isolated from both field-collected samples and trap cultures. They were revealed in 100% of field soils and 93.8% of trap cultures and represented 7 of the 8 recognized genera of the <i>Glomeromycota</i>. The arbuscular fungi occurring distinctly more frequently in the soil and root samples examined were members of the genus <i>Glomus</i>. The species of AMF most frequently occurring in cultivated soils of the Lubuskie province were <i>G. claroideum</i>, <i>G. constrictum</i>, <i>G. deserticola</i> and <i>G. mosseae</i>, whereas <i>G. claroideum</i>, <i>G. constrictum</i>, <i>G. deserticola</i>, <i>G. mosseae</i>, and <i>S. dipurpurescens</i> were more frequently found in uncultivated sites. The analysis of similarity of the species composition of AMF populations in sites of the Lubuskie province and the Western Pomeranian province earlier examined showed that (1) the occurrence in Poland of most taxa of these fungi detected in the study presented here is even and does not change with time, (2) the communities of AMF area are stable, despite the arduousness resulting from the agricultural and chemical practices conducted, and (3) the species diversity of the plants cultivated in a long period of time has no influence on the species composition of populations of AMF.

The data, presented here, come from samples collected during three research projects which aimed to assess the impact of land-use type on Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) diversity and community composition in pastures of Terceira Island (Azores, Macaronesia, Portugal) and also in the native forest of two Azorean Islands (Terceira and São Miguel; Azores, Macaronesia, Portugal). Both projects contributed to improving the knowledge of AMF community structure at both local and regional scales. Little is known on the AMF communities from Azores islands and this study reports the first survey in two Azorean Islands (Terceira and São Miguel). A total of 18,733 glomeromycotan spores were classified at the species level from 244 field soil samples collected in three different habitat types – native forests (dominated by Juniperus brevifolia and Picconia azorica), semi-natural and intensively-managed pastures. Thirty-seven distinct spore morphotypes, representing ten glomeromycotan families, were detected. Species of the family Acaulosporaceae dominated the samples, with 13 species (38% of the taxa), followed by Glomeraceae (6 spp.), Diversisporaceae (4 spp.), Archaeosporaceae (3 spp.), Claroideoglomeraceae (3 spp.), Gigasporaceae (3 spp.), Ambisporaceae and Paraglomeraceae, both with the same number of AMF species (2 spp.), Sacculosporaceae (1 sp.) and Entrophospora (family insertae sedis). Members of the family Acaulosporaceae occurred almost exclusively in the native forests especially associated with the Picconia azorica rhizosphere, while members of Gigasporaceae family showed a high tendency to occupy the semi-natural pastures and the native forests of Picconia azorica. Members of Glomeraceae family were broadly distributed by all types of habitat which confirm the high ecological plasticity of this AMF family to occupy the more diverse habitats.
