According to the actual working condition of the gear, the supporting gear shaft is treated as an elastic support. Its impact on the gear body vibration is considered and investigated and the dynamic response of elastic teeth and gear body is analyzed. On this basis, the gear body is considered as a three-dimensional elastic disc and the gear teeth are treated as an elastic cantilever beam. Under the conditions of the elastic boundary (support shaft), combining to the elastic disk and elastic teeth, the influence of three-dimensional elastic discs on the meshing tooth response under an elastic boundary condition is also included. A dynamic model of the gear support system and calculated model of the gear tooth response are then established. The inherent characteristics of the gear support system and dynamics response of the meshing tooth are presented and simulated. It was shown by the results that it is correct to use the elastic support condition to analyze the gear support system. Based on the above three-dimensional elastic dynamics analysis, this paper set up a dynamics coupling model of a cracked gear structure support system that considered the influence of a three-dimensional elastic disc on a cracked meshing tooth under elastic conditions. It discusses the dynamic characteristic of the cracked gear structure system and coupling dynamic response of the meshing tooth, offering a three-dimensional elastic body model of the tooth root crack and pitch circle crack with different sizes, conducting the three-dimensional elastic dynamic analysis to the faulty crack. ANSYS was employed to carry out dynamic responses, as well as to simulate the acoustic field radiation orientation of a three-dimensional elastic crack body at the tooth root crack and pitch circle with different sizes.

Abstract Vibration methods are used to identify faults, such as spanning and loss of cover, in long off-shore pipelines. A pipeline ‘pig’, propelled by fluid flow, generates transverse vibration in the pipeline and the measured vibration amplitude reflects the nature of the support condition. Large quantities of vibration data are collected and analysed by Fourier and wavelet methods.

At conventional pressurized water reactors (PWRs), cold water stored in the refueling water tank of emergency core cooling system is injected into the primary coolant system through a safety injection (SI) line, which is connected to each cold leg pipe between the main coolant pump and the reactor vessel during the SI operation, which begins on the receipt of a loss of coolant accident signal. In normal reactor power operation mode, the wall of SI line nozzle maintains at high temperature because it is the junction part connected to the cold leg pipe through which the hot main coolant flows. To prevent and relieve excessive transient thermal stress in the nozzle wall, which may be caused by the direct contact of cold water in the SI operation mode, a thermal sleeve in the shape of thin wall cylinder is set in the nozzle part of each SI line. Recently, mechanical failures that the sleeves are separated from the SI branch pipe and fall into the connected cold leg main pipe occurred in sequence at some typical PWR plants in Korea. To find out the root cause of thermal sleeve breakaway failures, the flow situation in the junction of primary coolant main pipe-SI branch pipe and the vibration modal characteristics of the thermal sleeve are investigated in detail by using both computational fluid dynamics code and structure analysis finite element code. As a result, the transient response in fluid pressure exerting on the local part of thermal sleeve wall surface to the primary coolant flow through the pipe junction area during the normal reactor operation mode shows oscillatory characteristics with the frequencies ranging from 15Hzto18Hz. These frequencies coincide with the lower mode natural frequencies of thermal sleeve, which has a pinned support condition on the outer surface with the circumferential prominence set into the circumferential groove on the inner surface of SI nozzle at the midheight of thermal sleeve. In addition, the variation of pressure on the thermal sleeve surface yields alternating forces and torques in the directions of two rectangular axes perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of cylindrical thermal sleeve, which causes both rolling and pitching motions of the thermal sleeve. Consequently, it is seen that this flow situation surrounding the thermal sleeve during the normal reactor operation can induce resonant vibrations accompanying the shaking motion of the thermal sleeve at the pinned support condition, which finally leads to the failures of thermal sleeve breakaway from the SI nozzle.

ABSTRACTThis study asked whether lexical availability affects the length, complexity, order of mention, and fluency of children's utterances. Lexical availability was manipulated through discourse support (present or absent) and word frequency (high or low) for 40 target nouns. Length was indexed by mean number of words per communication unit. Complexity was indexed by mean number of verbs per communication unit. Earlier mention was measured by mean number of words preceding the target word in each communication unit. Thirty-six subjects, aged 4, 6, and 8, described 40 illustrations containing a high or low frequency target noun referent. In the discourse support condition, provided for one half of the target words, subjects named the target word prior to the description task. Results showed that the number of responses containing the target word varied with age, word frequency and discourse support condition; length of responses varied with age and its interaction with discourse support; earlier mention varied with age and discourse support condition; and fluency varied with discourse support condition. The results are discussed from the viewpoint of Bock's process model of sentence production.

The usage of computer software in civil engineering has expanded in last decades. Many general-purpose and special-purpose commercial programs perform a very important function, especially at the design stage. In this study, a computer program is introduced for the analysis and design of the axial symmetric cylindrical wall considering the dome effects. Analysis processes are carried out according to Flexibility theory with long wall assumption and during the reinforced concrete (RC) design of the wall, ACI 318-Building code requirements for structural concrete are considered. In numerical investigation, the effects of the dome properties (thickness and height) on the analysis and design of the wall are investigated by performing a totally 72 case analyzes. These cases include different support condition at bottom of the wall, wall heights, dome thicknesses and heights. According to analysis results, it is concluded that effects of dome thickness and heights on the wall on the wall are very limited.

The offshore wind turbines are dynamically sensitive, whose fundamental frequency can be very close to the forcing frequencies activated by the environmental and turbine loads. Minor changes of support conditions may lead to the shift of natural frequencies, and this could be disastrous if resonance happens. To monitor the support conditions and thus to enhance the safety of offshore wind turbines, a model updating method is developed in this study. A hybrid sensing system was fabricated and set up in the laboratory to investigate the long-term dynamic behaviour of the offshore wind turbine system with monopile foundation in sandy deposits. A finite element model was constructed to simulate structural behaviours of the offshore wind turbine system. Distributed nonlinear springs and a roller boundary condition are used to model the soil–structure interaction properties. The finite element model and the test results were used to analyse the variation of the support condition of the monopile, through an finite element model updating process using estimation of distribution algorithms. The results show that the fundamental frequency of the test model increases after a period under cyclic loading, which is attributed to the compaction of the surrounding sand instead of local damage of the structure. The hybrid sensing system is reliable to detect both the acceleration and strain responses of the offshore wind turbine model and can be potentially applied to the remote monitoring of real offshore wind turbines. The estimation of distribution algorithm–based model updating technique is demonstrated to be successful for the support condition monitoring of the offshore wind turbine system, which is potentially useful for other model updating and condition monitoring applications.

This article presents a method for evaluating the support condition of bridges. This is done by representing the aging and deteriorated supports as rotation springs with equivalent spring constants. Sensitivity analysis was performed to obtain a relationship between the spring constant and the bridge responses (deflections/slopes). From this relationship, measured bridge responses can be used to estimate the equivalent spring constants through interpolation. Numerical analysis was performed to check whether the method can be used to calculate equivalent spring constants. Then, the method was verified by performing laboratory tests on a scale model bridge and field test on an actual bridge. In both tests, spring constants were estimated using the proposed method and then verified by calculating the displacements and frequencies and comparing them to the measured values.
