An important aspect of the aerodynamic flow field in the tip region of axial compressor rotors is the unsteady interaction between the tip clearance vortex and the incoming stator wakes. In order to gain an improved understanding of the mechanics involved, systematic studies need to be performed. As a first step towards the characterisation of the dynamic effects caused by the relative movement of the blade rows, the impact of a stationary wake-induced inlet disturbance on a linear compressor cascade with tip clearance will be analyzed. The wakes were generated by a fixed grid of cylindrical bars with variable pitch being placed at discrete pitchwise positions. Part II of this two-part paper focuses on the numerical studies conducted with the scientific flow solver TRACE. Selected measurements, which are discussed in detail in the first part of this paper, are compared with steady state RANS simulation data to determine the validity of the computational model. For this purpose, the flow field obtained in the passage (PIV), at the cascade exit (five-hole probes) and the endwall pressure distributions were used. The presented numerical results show potentials and limitations of the steady state CFD for the prediction of the investigated flow phenomena. The computations provide the initial conditions for future unsteady calculations, and enable a separate depiction of potential effects of steady and unsteady wake-tip clearance vortex interaction.

This paper focuses on experimental studies conducted at the newly designed low-speed cascade wind tunnel in Dresden. The general tunnel configuration and details on the specific cascade setup will be presented. Steady state flow field measurements were carried out using five-hole probe traverses up- and downstream of the cascade and accompanied by static wall pressure readings. 2D-particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements complemented these results by visualizing the blade-to-blade flow field. Hence, the structure of the evolving secondary flow system is evaluated and compared for all tested configurations.

The relationship between turbomachinery blade circulation and tip clearance vortex circulation measured experimentally is examined using three-dimensional viscous flow computations. It is shown that the clearance vortex circulation one would measure is dependent on the placement of the fluid contour around which the circulation measurement is taken. Radial transport of vorticity results in the magnitude of the measured clearance vortex circulation generally being less than the blade circulation. For compressors, radial transport of vorticity shed from the blade tip in proximity to the endwall is the principal contributor to the discrepancy between the measured vortex circulation and blade circulation. Further, diffusion of vorticity shed at the blade tip toward the endwall makes it impossible in most practical cases to construct a fluid contour around the vortex that encloses all, and only, the vorticity shed from the blade tip. One should thus not expect agreement between measured tip clearance vortex circulation and circulation around the blade.

The primary focus of this paper is to investigate the effect of rotor tip gap size on how the rotor unsteady tip clearance flow structure changes in a low speed one and half stage axial compressor at near stall operation (for example, where maximum pressure rise is obtained). A Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is applied to calculate the unsteady flow field at this flow condition with both a small and a large tip gaps. The numerically obtained flow fields at the small clearance matches fairly well with the available initial measurements obtained at the Johns Hopkins University with 3-D unsteady PIV in an index-matched test facility which renders the compressor blades and casing optically transparent. With this setup, the unsteady velocity field in the entire flow domain, including the flow inside the tip gap, can be measured. The numerical results are also compared with previously published measurements in a low speed single stage compressor (Maerz et al. [2002]). The current study shows that, with the smaller rotor tip gap, the tip clearance vortex moves to the leading edge plane at near stall operating condition, creating a nearly circumferentially aligned vortex that persists around the entire rotor. On the other hand, with a large tip gap, the clearance vortex stays inside the blade passage at near stall operation. With the large tip gap, flow instability and related large pressure fluctuation at the leading edge are observed in this one and a half stage compressor. Detailed examination of the unsteady flow structure in this compressor stage reveals that the flow instability is due to shed vortices near the leading edge, and not due to a three-dimensional separation vortex originating from the suction side of the blade, which is commonly referred to during a spike-type stall inception. The entire tip clearance flow is highly unsteady. Many vortex structures in the tip clearance flow, including the sheet vortex system near the casing, interact with each other. The core tip clearance vortex, which is formed with the rotor tip gap flows near the leading edge, is also highly unsteady or intermittent due to pressure oscillations near the leading edge and varies from passage to passage. For the current compressor stage, the evidence does not seem to support that a classical vortex breakup occurs in any organized way, even with the large tip gap. Although wakes from the IGV influence the tip clearance flow in the rotor, the major characteristics of rotor tip clearance flows in isolated or single stage rotors are observed in this one and a half stage axial compressor.

In this two-part paper results of the periodical unsteady flow field within the third rotor blade row of the four-stage Dresden Low-Speed Research Compressor are presented. The main part of the experimental investigations was performed using Laser-Doppler-Anemometry. Results of the flow field at several spanwise positions between midspan and rotor blade tip will be discussed. In addition time-resolving pressure sensors at midspan of the rotor blades provide information about the unsteady profile pressure distribution. In part II of the paper the flow field in the rotor blade tip region will be discussed. The experimental results reveal a strong periodical interaction of the incoming stator wakes and the rotor blade tip clearance vortices. Consequently, in the rotor frame of reference the tip clearance vortices are periodical with the stator blade passing frequency. Due to the wakes the tip clearance vortices are separated into different segments. Along the mean vortex trajectory these parts can be characterised by alternating patches of higher and lower velocity and flow turning or subsequent counterrotating vortex pairs. These flow patterns move downstream along the tip clearance vortex path in time. As a result of the wake influence the orientation and extension of the tip clearance vortices as well as the flow blockage periodically vary in time.

From earlier experimental investigations in a single-stage axial-flow pump and different numerical calculations of the flow in single-stage axial-flow compressors, it is known that vortex breakdown of the tip clearance vortex can take place in turbomachines, although an experimental proof for subsonic compressors is lacking. Vortex breakdown, if existent, is a source of high instability in the sensitive tip region of axial-flow pumps and compressors and will also play an important role in the stall inception process. Therefore, the flow in a linear compressor cascade with a 3 per cent tip clearance to one side has been investigated at different flow angles from the design point up to the stability limit of the cascade. The cascade resembles the tip section of a single-stage, axial-flow, low-speed compressor that is also in use at the Technical University of Braunschweig. The measuring techniques used were (a) a commercial particle image velocimetry (PIV) system and (b) a pressure measuring system with several flush mounted high-response pressure transducers at selected locations where the vortex was expected. As the cascade approaches its stall limit, the analysis of the pressure signals in the frequency domain revealed a bump of increased amplitude at a certain non-dimensional frequency for some of the measuring positions. The measuring positions that exhibited the bump correlated very well with a paraboloid-shaped region of high standard deviation enveloping an area of very low momentum fluid. It is shown that the frequency of the striking bump corresponds to the rotational frequency of the vortex calculated from the PIV measurements.

Large tip clearances typically in the region of six percent exist in the high pressure stages of compressors of industrial gas turbines. Due to the relatively short annulus height and significant blockage, the tip clearance flow accounts for the largest proportion of loss in the HP. Therefore increasing the understanding of such flows will allow for improvements in design of such compressors, increasing efficiency, stability and the operating range. Experimental and computational techniques have been used to increase the physical understanding of the tip clearance flows through varying clearances in a linear cascade of controlled-diffusion blades. This paper shows two unexpected results. Firstly the loss does not increase with clearances greater than 4% and secondly there is an increase of blade loading towards the tip above 2% clearance. It appears that the loss production mechanisms of the pressure driven tip clearance jet do not increase as the clearance is increased to large values. The increase in blade force is attributed to the effect of the strong tip clearance vortex which does not move across the blade passage to the pressure surface, as is often observed for high stagger blading. These results may be significant for the design of HP compressors for industrial gas turbines.

Unsteady flow characteristics in a modern transonic axial compressor operating near stall are studied in detail. Measured data from high-response pressure probes show that the tip clearance vortex oscillates substantially near stall. Instantaneous flow structure varies substantially among different blade passages even with uniform inlet flow. Fast Fourier transformation of measured wall pressure shows a dominant frequency component that is between 30% and 40% of the rotor speed. To identify and analyze this phenomenon, computational studies based on a single passage and full annulus were carried out. The flow field in a transonic compressor near stall is heavily influenced by the unsteady motion of tip clearance vortices. Therefore, a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was carried out to capture transient characteristics of the tip clearance vortex more realistically. The wall pressure spectrum from the current full annulus analysis also shows a dominant frequency when the rotor operates near stall. The calculated peak frequency is about 30% of the rotor frequency. The dominant frequency, which is non-synchronous with the rotor blade, is due to rotating flow instabilities. Flow interactions across blade passages due to synchronized tip clearance vortex oscillation seem to be the main cause.

The primary focus of this paper is to investigate how a rotor’s unsteady tip clearance flow structure changes in a low speed one and half stage axial compressor when the rotor tip gap size is increased from 0.5 mm (0.49% of rotor tip blade chord, 2% of blade span) to 2.4 mm (2.34% chord, 4% span) at the design condition are investigated. The changes in unsteady tip clearance flow with the 0.62 % tip gap as the flow rate is reduced to near stall condition are also investigated. A Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is applied to calculate the unsteady flow field at these three flow conditions. Detailed Stereoscopic PIV (SPIV) measurements of the current flow fields were also performed at the Johns Hopkins University in a refractive index-matched test facility which renders the compressor blades and casing optically transparent. With this setup, the unsteady velocity field in the entire flow domain, including the flow inside the tip gap, can be measured. Unsteady tip clearance flow fields from LES are compared with the PIV measurements and both LES and PIV results are used to study changes in tip clearance flow structures. The current study shows that the tip clearance vortex is not a single structure as traditionally perceived. The tip clearance vortex is formed by multiple interlaced vorticities. Therefore, the tip clearance vortex is inherently unsteady. The multiple interlaced vortices never roll up to form a single structure. When phased-averaged, the tip clearance vortex appears as a single structure. When flow rate is reduced with the same tip gap, the tip clearance vortex rolls further upstream and the tip clearance vortex moves further radially inward and away from the suction side of the blade. When the tip gap size is increased at the design flow condition, the overall tip clearance vortex becomes stronger and it stays closer to the blade suction side and the vortex core extends all the way to the exit of the blade passage. Measured and calculated unsteady flow fields inside the tip gap agree fairly well. Instantaneous velocity vectors inside the tip gap from both the PIV and LES do show flow separation and reattachment at the entrance of tip gap as some earlier studies suggested. This area at the entrance of tip gap flow (the pressure side of the blade) is confined very close to the rotor tip section. With a small tip gap (0.5mm), the gap flow looks like a simple two-dimensional channel flow with larger velocity near the casing for both flow rates. A small area with a sharp velocity gradient is observed just above the rotor tip. This strong shear layer is turned radially inward when it collides with the incoming flow and forms the core structure of the tip clearance vortex. When tip gap size is increased to 2.4 mm at the design operation, the radial profile of the tip gap flow changes drastically. With the large tip gap, the gap flow looks like a two-dimensional channel flow only near the casing. Near the rotor top section, a bigger region with very large shear and reversed flow is observed.
