The primary focus of this paper is to investigate how a rotor’s unsteady tip clearance flow structure changes in a low speed one and half stage axial compressor when the rotor tip gap size is increased from 0.5 mm (0.49% of rotor tip blade chord, 2% of blade span) to 2.4 mm (2.34% chord, 4% span) at the design condition are investigated. The changes in unsteady tip clearance flow with the 0.62 % tip gap as the flow rate is reduced to near stall condition are also investigated. A Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is applied to calculate the unsteady flow field at these three flow conditions. Detailed Stereoscopic PIV (SPIV) measurements of the current flow fields were also performed at the Johns Hopkins University in a refractive index-matched test facility which renders the compressor blades and casing optically transparent. With this setup, the unsteady velocity field in the entire flow domain, including the flow inside the tip gap, can be measured. Unsteady tip clearance flow fields from LES are compared with the PIV measurements and both LES and PIV results are used to study changes in tip clearance flow structures. The current study shows that the tip clearance vortex is not a single structure as traditionally perceived. The tip clearance vortex is formed by multiple interlaced vorticities. Therefore, the tip clearance vortex is inherently unsteady. The multiple interlaced vortices never roll up to form a single structure. When phased-averaged, the tip clearance vortex appears as a single structure. When flow rate is reduced with the same tip gap, the tip clearance vortex rolls further upstream and the tip clearance vortex moves further radially inward and away from the suction side of the blade. When the tip gap size is increased at the design flow condition, the overall tip clearance vortex becomes stronger and it stays closer to the blade suction side and the vortex core extends all the way to the exit of the blade passage. Measured and calculated unsteady flow fields inside the tip gap agree fairly well. Instantaneous velocity vectors inside the tip gap from both the PIV and LES do show flow separation and reattachment at the entrance of tip gap as some earlier studies suggested. This area at the entrance of tip gap flow (the pressure side of the blade) is confined very close to the rotor tip section. With a small tip gap (0.5mm), the gap flow looks like a simple two-dimensional channel flow with larger velocity near the casing for both flow rates. A small area with a sharp velocity gradient is observed just above the rotor tip. This strong shear layer is turned radially inward when it collides with the incoming flow and forms the core structure of the tip clearance vortex. When tip gap size is increased to 2.4 mm at the design operation, the radial profile of the tip gap flow changes drastically. With the large tip gap, the gap flow looks like a two-dimensional channel flow only near the casing. Near the rotor top section, a bigger region with very large shear and reversed flow is observed.

The primary focus of this paper is to investigate the effect of rotor tip gap size on how the rotor unsteady tip clearance flow structure changes in a low speed one and half stage axial compressor at near stall operation (for example, where maximum pressure rise is obtained). A Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is applied to calculate the unsteady flow field at this flow condition with both a small and a large tip gaps. The numerically obtained flow fields at the small clearance matches fairly well with the available initial measurements obtained at the Johns Hopkins University with 3-D unsteady PIV in an index-matched test facility which renders the compressor blades and casing optically transparent. With this setup, the unsteady velocity field in the entire flow domain, including the flow inside the tip gap, can be measured. The numerical results are also compared with previously published measurements in a low speed single stage compressor (Maerz et al. [2002]). The current study shows that, with the smaller rotor tip gap, the tip clearance vortex moves to the leading edge plane at near stall operating condition, creating a nearly circumferentially aligned vortex that persists around the entire rotor. On the other hand, with a large tip gap, the clearance vortex stays inside the blade passage at near stall operation. With the large tip gap, flow instability and related large pressure fluctuation at the leading edge are observed in this one and a half stage compressor. Detailed examination of the unsteady flow structure in this compressor stage reveals that the flow instability is due to shed vortices near the leading edge, and not due to a three-dimensional separation vortex originating from the suction side of the blade, which is commonly referred to during a spike-type stall inception. The entire tip clearance flow is highly unsteady. Many vortex structures in the tip clearance flow, including the sheet vortex system near the casing, interact with each other. The core tip clearance vortex, which is formed with the rotor tip gap flows near the leading edge, is also highly unsteady or intermittent due to pressure oscillations near the leading edge and varies from passage to passage. For the current compressor stage, the evidence does not seem to support that a classical vortex breakup occurs in any organized way, even with the large tip gap. Although wakes from the IGV influence the tip clearance flow in the rotor, the major characteristics of rotor tip clearance flows in isolated or single stage rotors are observed in this one and a half stage axial compressor.

The current paper reports on investigations aimed at advancing the understanding of the flow mechanism that leads to the onset of short-length scale rotating stall in a transonic axial compressor. Experimental data show large oscillation of the tip clearance vortex as the rotor operates near the stall condition. Inception of spike-type rotating stall is also measured in the current transonic compressor with high response pressure transducers. Computational studies of a single passage and the full annulus were carried out to identify flow mechanisms behind the spike-type stall inception in the current transonic compressor rotor. Steady and unsteady single passage flow simulations were performed, first to get insight into the interaction between the tip clearance vortex and the passage shock. The conventional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes method with a standard turbulence closure scheme does not accurately reproduce tip clearance vortex oscillation and the measured unsteady pressure field. Consequently, a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was carried out to capture more relevant physics in the computational simulation of the rotating stall inception. The unsteady random behavior of the tip clearance vortex and it’s interaction with the passage shock seem to be critical ingredients in the development of spike-type rotating stall in a transonic compressor. The Large Eddy Simulation was further extended to the full annulus to identify flow mechanisms behind the measured spike-type rotating stall inception. The current study shows that the spike-type rotating stall develops after the passage shock is fully detached from the blade passages. Interaction between the tip clearance vortex and the passage shock creates a low momentum area near the pressure side of the blade. As the mass flow rate decreases, this low momentum area moves further upstream and reversed tip clearance flow is initiated at the trailing edge plane. Eventually, the low momentum area near the pressure side reaches the leading edge and forward spillage of the tip clearance flow occurs. The flows in the affected blade passage or passages then stall. As the stalled blade passages are formed behind the passage shock, the stalled area rotates counter to the blade rotation just like the classical Emmon’s type rotating stall. Both the measurements and the computations show that the rotating stall cell covers one to two blade passage lengths and rotates at roughly 50% of the rotor speed.

The accurate characterization and simulation of rotor tip clearance flows has received much attention in recent years due to their impact on compressor-performance and stability. At NASA Glenn the first known three dimensional Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) measurements of the tip region of a low speed compressor rotor have been acquired to characterize the behavior of the rotor tip clearance flow. The measurements were acquired phase-locked to the rotor position so that changes in the tip clearance vortex position relative to the rotor blade can be seen. The DPIV technique allows the magnitude and relative contributions of both the asynchronous motions of a coherent structure and the temporal unsteadiness to be evaluated. Comparison of measurements taken at the peak efficiency and at near stall operating conditions characterizes the mean position of the clearance vortex and the changes in the unsteady behavior of the vortex with blade loading. Comparisons of the 3-D DPIV measurements at the compressor design point to a 3D steady N-S solution are also done to assess the fidelity of steady, single-passage simulations to model an unsteady flow field.

This paper experimentally investigated the evolution of the tip clearance flow of a CRAC (Contra-Rotating Axial Compressor) test rig by means of high-response dynamic pressure measurements. The unsteady pressure field along both chordwise and circumferential directions in the tip clearance is recorded. The tip clearance vortex trajectory is captured using RMS (Root-Mean Square) method. Pressure spectrum analysis indicates that the unsteadiness of tip clearance vortex occurred when the flow coefficient approaches low enough even in the stable operating point. The unsteadiness of tip clearance vortex gets stronger as the flow coefficient drops until rotating stall occurs. According to this feature, the auto-correlation analysis and the cross-correlation analysis combined probability statistics method are used to work as pre-stall warning methods. In addition to, rotating instability which is caused by disturbances propagating along circumferential direction occurred at some flow condition.

The current paper reports on investigations aimed at advancing the understanding of the flow field near the casing of a forward-swept transonic compressor rotor. The role of tip clearance flow and its interaction with the passage shock on stall inception are analyzed in detail. Steady and unsteady three-dimensional viscous flow calculations are applied to obtain flow fields at various operating conditions. The numerical results are first compared with available measured data. Then, the numerically obtained flow fields are interrogated to identify the roles of flow interactions between the tip clearance flow, the passage shock, and the blade/endwall boundary layers. In addition to the flow field with nominal tip clearance, two more flow fields are analyzed in order to identify the mechanisms of blockage generation: one with zero tip clearance, and one with nominal tip clearance on the forward portion of the blade and zero clearance on the aft portion. The current study shows that the tip clearance vortex does not break down, even when the rotor operates in a stalled condition. Interaction between the shock and the suction surface boundary layer causes the shock, and therefore the tip clearance vortex, to oscillate. However, for the currently investigated transonic compressor rotor, so-called breakdown of the tip clearance vortex does not occur during stall inception. The tip clearance vortex originates near the leading edge tip, but moves downward in the spanwise direction inside the blade passage. A low momentum region develops above the tip clearance vortex from flow originating from the casing boundary layer. The low momentum area builds up immediately downstream of the passage shock and above the core vortex. This area migrates toward the pressure side of the blade passage as the flow rate is decreased. The low momentum area prevents incoming flow from passing through the pressure side of the passage and initiates stall inception. It is well known that inviscid effects dominate tip clearance flow. However, complex viscous flow structures develop inside the casing boundary layer at operating conditions near stall.

In the course of advancing the understanding of the unsteady flow nature of compressor tip clearance flows, the present paper investigates the unsteady tip clearance flow in the second rotor of a two-stage low-speed axial compressor and its interaction with upstream and downstream stators. Numerical methods were adopted in the present study and the research focused on clarifying the unsteadiness of tip clearance flow behavior and its link to the change of rotor performance, subjected to the variables of axial gap sizes between the rotor and upstream and downstream stators. The result shows how and why the tip leakage vortex trajectory changes its shape with the change of gap size, and its impact on the rotor pressure rise characteristic. Within all the computed operating range, the pressure rise increases monotonically with the decrease of upstream axial gaps, but no monotonic variation was observed with the change of downstream axial gaps. This trend of performance change could be explained by the unsteady effect of upstream stator wakes, and the overall result is that the rotor performance was found to be more influenced by the upstream interaction than the downstream interaction. The frequency characteristic of the tip clearance vortex, under the influence of gap size and compressor operating condition, was also analyzed to provide a quantified estimation of its periodic flow behavior and a comparison with the recent results of other researchers.

In this study, the impact of single grooves at different locations on compressor stability and tip clearance flow are numerically and experimentally investigated. Initially, the numerical stall margin improvement (SMI) curve is examined using experimental data. Then, the evolution of the interface between the tip leakage flow (TLF) and the incoming main flow (MF) in the prestall and stall inception processes for two typical grooves, i.e., the worst and the optimal grooves in terms of their SMI, are compared with the smooth casing. The results show two different interface behaviors throughout the throttling process. The compressor with the worst single groove casing first experiences a long-length-scale disturbance after the interface near the blade suction side spills in front of the rotor leading-edge plane, and then goes through spikes after the whole interface spills. With the smooth casing and the optimal single groove near midchord, the interface reaches the rotor leading edge at the last stable operating point and spikes appear once the whole interface spills over the rotor leading edge. A model that illustrates the spillage patterns of the interface for the two stall precursors is thus proposed accordingly and used to explain their effectiveness in terms of the SMI. At last, the relevance of these results to the preliminary selection of groove locations for multigroove casing treatments (CTs) is verified by test data and discussed.

The tip leakage flow has significant effects on turbine in loss production, aerodynamic efficiency, etc. Then it’s important to minimize these effects for a better performance by adopting corresponding flow control. The active turbine tip clearance flow control with injection from the tip platform is given in Part-1 of this paper. This paper is Part-2 of the two-part papers focusing on the effect of five different passive turbine tip clearance flow control methods on the tip clearance flow physics, which consists of a partial suction side squealer tip (Partial SS Squealer), a double squealer tip (Double Side Squealer), a pressure side tip shelf with inclined squealer tip on a double squealer tip (Improved PS Squealer), a tip platform extension edge in pressure side (PS Extension) and in suction side (SS Extension) respectively. Combined with the turbine rotor and the numerical method mentioned in Part 1, the effects of passive turbine tip clearance flow controls on the tip clearance flow were sequentially simulated. The detailed tip clearance flow fields with different squealer rims were described with the streamline and the velocity vector in various planes parallel to the tip platform or normal to the tip leakage vortex core. Accordingly, the mechanisms of five passive controls were put in evidence; the effects of the passive controls on the turbine efficiency and the tip clearance flow field were highlighted. The results show that the secondary flow loss near the outer casing including the tip leakage flow and the casing boundary layer can be reduced in all the five passive control methods. Comparing the active control with the passive control, the effect brought by the active injection control on the tip leakage flow is evident. The turbine rotor efficiency could be increased via the rational passive turbine tip clearance flow control. The Improved PS Squealer had the best effect on turbine rotor efficiency, and it increased by 0.215%.

Tip leakage loss characterization and modeling plays an important role in small size radial turbine research. The momentum of the flow passing through the tip gap is highly related with the tip leakage losses. The ratio of fluid momentum driven by the pressure gradient between suction side and pressure side and the fluid momentum caused by the shroud friction has been widely used to analyze and to compare different sized tip clearances. However, the commonly used number for building this momentum ratio lacks some variables, as the blade tip geometry data and the viscosity of the used fluid. To allow the comparison between different sized turbocharger turbine tip gaps, work has been put into finding a consistent characterization of radial tip clearance flow. Therefore, a non-dimensional number has been derived from the Navier Stokes Equation. This number can be calculated like the original ratio over the chord length. Using the results of wide range CFD data, the novel tip leakage number has been compared with the traditional and widely used ratio. Furthermore, the novel tip leakage number can be separated into three different non-dimensional factors. First, a factor dependent on the radial dimensions of the tip gap has been found. Second, a factor defined by the viscosity, the blade loading, and the tip width has been identified. Finally, a factor that defines the coupling between both flow phenomena. These factors can further be used to filter the tip gap flow, obtained by CFD, with the influence of friction driven and pressure driven momentum flow.
