AbstractThe rapid development of economics requires highly efficient and environment-friendly urban transportation systems. Such requirement presents challenges in sustainable urban transportation. The analysis and understanding of transportation-related behaviors provide one approach to dealing with complicated transportation activities. In this study, the management of traffic systems is divided into four levels with a structural and systematic perspective. Then, several special cases from the perspective of behavior, including purchasing behaviors toward new energy vehicles, choice behaviors toward green travel, and behavioral reactions toward transportation demand management policies, are investigated. Several management suggestions are proposed for transportation authorities to improve sustainable traffic management.

The aim of the research is to provide suggestions for increasing the use of bicycles, which are part of the modern transportation policies. The methodology in the research was developed according to the physical characteristics of the city center in Pristina and the new regulations of the Pristina Development Plan. In this context, in the questionnaires, the approach, demand and application possibilities of the passengers against the other transportation systems (except private vehicles) were evaluated. The field research questions were asked to get the thoughts of public transport passengers about these issues. The responses of 782 passengers that are directly or indirectly related with bicycle usage. As a result of these recommendations, Pristina will have two-way bicycle lanes with a length of 16 km to complete the cycling network. In this context, it was emphasized that the suggestions for the urban bicycle network in Pristina were evaluated in order of priority. Recommendations are given in accordance with the infrastructure of the route and it is expected that a regular transportation type will be provided to the urban transportation of Pristina by carrying out the arrangements on a 16 m wide road between the two sidewalks (platforms). In the new regulations, a two-way 4 km bike lane is proposed in the central ring of Pristina, as a result of the bicycle lanes that will form the bicycle network in Pristina to implement the bicycle public transport integration strategy in the future. Approximately 8.5 km two-way bicycle lane in central ring, 1.5 km two-way bicycle lane in the southwestern region and 2km bicycle lane in the southeastern region has been proposed for Pristina. The rapid development of cities has brought new challenges and opportunities to traditional traffic management. The usage of smart cards promotes the upgrading of intelligent transportation systems, and also produces considerable big data. As an important part of the urban comprehensive transportation system, Nanjing metro has more than 1 million inbound and outbound records of traffic smart cards used by residents every day. How to process these traffic data and present them visually is an urgent problem in modern traffic management. In this study, five working days with normal weather conditions in Nanjing were selected, and the swiping records of the smart cards were extracted, and the space–time characteristics were analyzed. In terms of time analysis, this research analyzed the 24-h fluctuation of daily average passenger flow, peak hour coefficient of passenger flow, 24-h fluctuation of passenger flow on different metro lines, passenger flow intensity on different metro lines and passenger flow comparison at different stations. In spatial analysis, this study uses thermodynamic charts to represent the inflow and outflow of passengers at different stations during early and evening peak periods. The analysis results and visualized images directly reflect the area where Nanjing metro congestion is located, and also shows the commuting characteristics of residents. It can solve the problem of urban congestion, carry out the rational layout of urban functional areas, and promote the sustainable development of people and cities.

With the development and realization of industrialization and urbanization in the world, urban traffic volume grows rapidly; many big cities face more and more serious traffic problem. As a mean of traffic demand management, traffic congestion pricing has important significance in theory and practice. Traffic congestion pricing can counteract external diseconomy caused by network congestion, and the price of congestion is tantamount to the difference between social marginal cost and private marginal cost. This paper analyzes the economic theory of congestion pricing. Combined the effect of traffic congestion pricing that implemented in the developed countries, it researches the influence of urban transportation development in our country in the future based on the implementing congestion pricing.

Recently, practical applications for passenger flow prediction have brought many benefits to urban transportation development. With the development of urbanization, a real-world demand from transportation managers is to construct a new metro station in one city area that never planned before. Authorities are interested in the picture of the future volume of commuters before constructing a new station, and estimate how would it affect other areas. In this paper, this specific problem is termed as potential passenger flow (PPF) prediction, which is a novel and important study connected with urban computing and intelligent transportation systems. For example, an accurate PPF predictor can provide invaluable knowledge to designers, such as the advice of station scales and influences on other areas, etc. To address this problem, we propose a multi-view localized correlation learning method. The core idea of our strategy is to learn the passenger flow correlations between the target areas and their localized areas with adaptive-weight. To improve the prediction accuracy, other domain knowledge is involved via a multi-view learning process. We conduct intensive experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of our method with real-world official transportation datasets. The results demonstrate that our method can achieve excellent performance compared with other available baselines. Besides, our method can provide an effective solution to the cold-start problem in the recommender system as well, which proved by its outperformed experimental results.

With the increasingly serious problem of urban traffic congestion, more attention is focused on the Park and Ride (P&R) schemes based on urban transportation demand (TDM) management. The P&R locating research, as an important part of the scheme, plays an important role to strengthen the transportation management. On the basis of identifying all the potential P&R locations, and from the macroscopic perspective of urban transportation network, this paper establishes a model of P&R locating in order to minimize their construction costs as well as the total transportation costs. Example analysis is finally carried out with the help of Lingo software, thus testifying the validity of this research.

Abstract Recent years have witnessed a colossal increase of vehicles on the roads; unfortunately, the infrastructure of roads and traffic systems has not kept pace with this growth, resulting in inefficient traffic management. Owing to this imbalance, traffic jams on roads, congestions, and pollution have shown a marked increase. The management of growing traffic is a major issue across the world. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have a great potential in offering solutions to such issues by using novel technologies. In this review, the ITS-based solutions for traffic management and control have been categorized as traffic data collection solutions, traffic management solutions, congestion avoidance solutions, and travel time prediction solutions. The solutions have been presented along with their underlying technologies, advantages, and drawbacks. First, important solutions for collecting traffic-related data and road conditions are discussed. Next, ITS solutions for the effective management of traffic are presented. Third, key strategies based on machine learning and computational intelligence for avoiding congestion are outlined. Fourth, important solutions for accurately predicting travel time are presented. Finally, avenues for future work in these areas are discussed.

With the rapid development of China's automobile industry, intelligent transportation systems have become an important means of modern traffic management. The paper analyzes the prospects for detection of several sports: frame difference method, optical flow method and the background model, and compared the effects of several methods of detection, using a strong adaptability to disturbance Gaussian mixture background model to detect moving targets. Then the detected motion foreground image OTSU threshold, using morphological methods de-noising and holes filled, get a complete moving target. In this paper, the characteristics of the target shadow and existing methods are analyzed, using a shadow removal method based on color features.

Existing park and ride (P&R) facilities may enhance the serviceability of the transportation systems by redistributing travelers from vehicles mode to mass transit. As a tool in transportation demand management, road tolling policy will have an influence on the transportation system with P&R facilities. In this paper, impact of various road tolling policies on modal choice behaviors within context of commuting corridors with P&R services are investigated from the perspective of serviceability. The related road tolling schemes contains first-best toll, distance-based toll and cordon-based toll. The probability of commuters’ modal-choice is estimated using a stochastic equilibrium model. Innovatively, the serviceability concept is adopted to evaluate performances of different travel modes. Model results illustrate how transportation system performance is influenced by the different types of road tolling policies. Some of the results are concordant with empirical findings in the literature.
