Contamination of crops with phytopathogenic genera such as Fusarium, Aspergillus, Alternaria, and Penicillium usually results in mycotoxins in the stored crops or the final products (bread, beer, etc.). To reduce the damage and suppress the fungal growth, it is common to add antifungal substances during growth in the field or storage. Many of these antifungal substances are also harmful to human health and the reduction of their concentration would be of immense importance to food safety. Many eminent researchers are seeking a way to reduce the use of synthetic antifungal compounds and to implement more eco-friendly and healthier bioweapons against fungal proliferation and mycotoxin synthesis. This paper aims to address the recent advances in the effectiveness of biological antifungal compounds application against the aforementioned fungal genera and their species to enhance the protection of ecological and environmental systems involved in crop growing (water, soil, air) and to reduce fungicide contamination of food derived from these commodities.

In the last few decades, the importance of selenium in human health has been the subject of numerous studies. It is believed that the physiological effects of selenium occur mainly through the function of selenoproteins, which incorporate selenium in the form of one or more selenocysteine residues. Recent advances in understanding the complex regulation of selenoprotein synthesis and functional characterization of several members of the selenoprotein family have contributed to an improved comprehension of the role(s) of selenium in human health and the great diversity of physiological pathways influenced by this trace element.

Despite recent advances in antifungal development, fungi remain a devastating threat to human health and compromise viability of the food supply. Plant based antimicrobials represent a vast untapped source with tremendous potential. Herein we present the antifungal properties of more than 50 plant extracts against two important human and agricultural pathogens, Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus stolonifer. Multiple extracts exhibit promising MIC values of less than 100 μg/mL and are reported for both fungal species.

This chapter illustrates how recent advances in longitudinal methodology can be applied to diverse issues of interest to positive psychologists. The rules for doing research that can net the highest stakes in understanding are, to a considerable extent, the rules of design and measurement. The aim of the chapter is to describe how contemporary theories of well-being may be empirically evaluated using a variety of research designs and analytical techniques that can fully capture the complexity and dynamics of positive human health. Throughout, the chapter identifies unresolved methodological challenges associated with the measurement and analysis of between- and within-person phenomena and elaborates on the implications of these challenges for process research in positive psychology.

This Biochemical Society Annual Symposium on Recent Advances in Membrane Biochemistry was organized to bring together experts from across the spectrum of biomembrane disciplines from the biological to the biophysical/structural, with the intention of promoting interactions and collaborations across the field. We were keen that the potential for improving human health that stems from a deeper understanding of membrane structure/function should be acknowledged, especially in the light of the increasing numbers of membrane protein structures that continue to be made available to the biomembrane community. This foreword provides an idea of what was communicated in the various sessions and, we hope, gives an impression of the excitement generated by the speakers and delegates at this over-subscribed Symposium.
