The Hornsby Bend Hyacinth Facility, the first such system built under the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency “Construction Grants Program”, represents the culmination of over a decade of experience at the City of Austin with hyacinth treatment. The facility consists of three culture basins 265 m in length with an area of 1.6 ha. To permit year-round hyacinth culture, basins are covered with a 2.06 ha unitary greenhouse structure. Fenced exclusion areas at intervals along sides of basins serve as natural aerators and enhance fish production. The system, operated in an aerobic mode, was designed to daily treat about three million liters of sludge lagoon supernatant. Exclusion of large vertebrate predators and stocking of basins with selected animal species will provide a unique ecosystem. Basins were planted with hyacinth in late October, 1985 and discharge commenced on February 3, 1986. Functional characteristics and ecological considerations of the facility are discussed and operational performance data are presented. Maintenance harvesting of hyacinth and disposition of plant material are described. Application of greenhoused hyacinth treatment systems are addressed.

Although researchers have investigated the impact of Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) phases on human lives, only a few have examined such impacts on fisheries. In this study, we analyzed the influence of negative (positive) IOD phases on chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentrations as an indicator of phytoplankton biomass and small pelagic fish production in the eastern Indian Ocean (EIO) off Java. We also conducted field surveys in the EIO off Palabuhanratu Bay at the peak (October) and the end (December) of the 2019 positive IOD phase. Our findings show that the Chl-a concentration had a strong and robust association with the 2016 (2019) negative (positive) IOD phases. The negative (positive) anomalous Chl-a concentration in the EIO off Java associated with the negative (positive) IOD phase induced strong downwelling (upwelling), leading to the preponderant decrease (increase) in small pelagic fish production in the EIO off Java.

Total dissolved solids (TDS) and chlorophyll a were not related in 25 lakes which were all off the Precambrian Shield. Both on-shield and off-shield lakes were included in the previous reports which showed a significant relationship between TDS and productivity. When data from on-shield and off-shield lakes were analyzed separately, there was no significant positive relationship between TDS and lake biomass or productivity. It was also shown that mean depth ([Formula: see text]) was as good a predictor of fish production as the TDS: [Formula: see text] ratio, the morphoedaphic index.Key words: TDS, biomass, productivity, morphoedaphic index, chlorophyll a, lakes

The present article deals with the fisheries development of three important Ox-Bow Lakes of Ballia district of eastern Uttar Pradesh in relation to physico-chemical and biological conditions. The results were found conducive for Fisheries development. The results indicate clearly that potential fish yield is not being realized from the lakes and there is immense scope for increase in Fish production.
