The interaction between lactose level and crude protein concentration on piglet post-weaning performance, nitrogen metabolism, selected faecal microbial populations and faecal volatile fatty acid concentrations

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of essential oils (EO) from Lippia turbinata (LT) and Tagetes minuta (TM) as well as the rotation of both EO on fermentation parameters in vitro. Daily addition of LT, TM, or a 3-day rotation between them (TM/LT), as well as a control (without EO), was evaluated using the rumen simulation technique (Rusitec). The experiment lasted 19 days, with a 7-day adaptation period, followed by 12 days of treatment (Days 0–12). The EO were dissolved in ethanol (70% vol/vol) to be added daily to fermenters (300 μL/L) from Day 0. Daily measurements included methane concentration, total gas production, apparent DM disappearance and pH, which started 2 days before the addition of treatments. On Days 0, 4, 8 and 12 apparent crude protein disappearance and neutral detergent fibre disappearance, ammonia and volatile fatty acid concentration and composition were determined. Methane production was significantly inhibited shortly after addition of both EO added individually, and persisted over time with no apparent adaptation to EO addition. The TM/LT treatment showed a similar effect on methane production, suggesting that rotating the EO did not bring further improvements in reduction or persistency compared with the inclusion of the EO individually. Gas production, total volatile fatty acid concentration and composition and apparent crude protein disappearance were not affected by EO addition. Compared with the control, a 5% reduction of apparent DM disappearance and a 15% reduction of neutral detergent fibre disappearance were observed with the addition of EO. Only TM and TM/LT reduced ammonia concentration. Given the significant and persistent antimethanogenic activity of both EO, and the potential of T. minuta to modify nitrogen metabolism, EO from these plant species are of interest for developing new feed additives with potential application in ruminant nutrition that are also likely to be acceptable to consumers.

1. Twelve steers fitted with rumen cannulas were used in three separate experiments to investigate the effects of the presence or absence of rumen ciliate protozoa on methane production. The diet consisted of 850 g barley and 150 g protein supplement/kg, and was given in three feeds daily at a restricted level of 61 g/kg live weight0.75. Animals were defaunated initially by allowingad lib. consumption of this diet and were then maintained ciliate-free by isolation or were faunated by inoculation with a mixed ciliate suspension. Samples of rumen fluid were taken routinely for the assessment of microbial populations and for volatile fatty acid (VFA) analysis and energy and nitrogen balances and digestibility measurements were made at intervals while animals were confined in respiration chambers.2. In each experiment the rumen VFA proportions changed from a high-propionate pattern under ciliate-free conditions to a low-propionate, high-butyrate pattern in the presence of ciliates: differences between treatments were highly significant (P < 0.001). There were also marked differences between treatments in CH, production but a reliable comparison was possible only in Expt 3, in which CH4was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the presence of a rumen ciliate population. In Expt 3 the increased loss of energy as CH4in the faunated animals amounted to 44 MJ/100 MJ energy intake.3. Stoichiometric estimates of CH4production derived from the observed VFA proportions showed good agreement with CH4production as measured in respiration chambers. On average, the stoichiometric CH4values overestimated CH4production by a factor of 1.08.4. Highly significant linear relationships (P < 0.001) were observed between the molar proportion of each major VFA and the quantity of CH4produced: the proportion of propionic acid was inversely related to CH4and showed the lowest residual standard deviation of all the relationships examined.5. The losses of energy in faeces and urine did not differ between treatments hence the increased loss of energy as CH4in the faunated animals resulted in a significant reduction in the metabolizability of the diet from 0.73 to 0.69 (P < 0.05). No significant differences were detected between treatments in heat production, apparent digestibility coefficients or N balance.6. It is suggested that the rumen ciliates, by modifying the rumen VFA proportions, are directly responsible for the increased CH4production in faunated animals.

SUMMARYDigestibility of neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and monosaccharide components of diets containing 60% untreated straw (UTS) or straw treated with sulphur dioxide (TS) and poultrylitter (1:1) plus 40% concentrate at 700 g/day intake was examined in sheep equipped with rumen and duodenal cannulas. An all-concentrate diet (CD) served as a reference ration. The SO2 treatment of straw increased the apparent digestibility of the NDF, glucose, xylose, arabinose and galactose components of the diet from 58·9, 86·7, 55·7, 82·5 and 91·8%, respectively, in the UTS diet to 73·8, 92·6, 77·8, 88·9 and 94·6%, respectively, in the TS diet. Whereas digestion of NDF and glucose in sheep on the TS diet was slightly lower than in those on the CD diet, digestion of xylose, arabinose and galactose was higher. Thus, the digestibility of total monosaccharides in th TS diet was 90·2 % and that of the CD diet only 61% units higher. The SO2 treatment also increased the total rumen volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration and the proportion of butyric acid in the total VFA compared with the UTS diet.Rumen ammonia concentration was 7 mg/100 ml lower and nonammonia nitrogen (NAN) flowto the duodenum was 1·3 g/day higher in sheep fed the TS diet compared with the CD diet. The quantity of duodenal N absorbed in the intestine was 10·7 g/day in the TS diet, close to the value of 11·6 g/day found with the CD diet.The similarity between the TS and CD diets in total monosaccharides digestion and duodenal Nabsorption, confirms the findings of earlier studies that a TS diet is a highly productive ration.Complementary interaction between the SO2-treated straw and poultry litter components of the TS diet is discussed.
