In this work, Au-modified F-TiO2 is developed as a simple and efficient photocatalyst for H2O2 production under ultraviolet light. The Au/F-TiO2 photocatalyst avoids the necessity of adding fluoride into the reaction medium for enhancing H2O2 synthesis, as in a pure TiO2 reaction system. The F− modification inhibits the H2O2 decomposition through the formation of the ≡Ti–F complex. Au is an active cocatalyst for photocatalytic H2O2 production. We compared the activity of TiO2 with F− modification and without F− modification in the presence of Au, and found that the H2O2 production rate over Au/F-TiO2 reaches four times that of Au/TiO2. In situ electron spin resonance studies have shown that H2O2 is produced by stepwise single-electron oxygen reduction on the Au/F-TiO2 photocatalyst.

Hydrazine monopropellant is often used with a spontaneous catalyst a high-performance aircraft emergency power unit (EPU) and in aerospace propulsion; however, it is toxic and requires special handling. A hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-based gas generator, which is suitable for a new family of environmentally friendly monopropellants and is a substitute for toxic hydrazine in EPUs, is introduced in this study. A MnO2/Al2O3 catalyst for H2O2 decomposition, superior to silver catalysts at normal starting and reactivity capabilities, was selected and developed. The performance tests of coupling the gas generator with a turbocharger showed acceptable results for an aircraft EPU with decomposition above 90%, 37 kW maximum turbine output power, and a maximum starting delay of 1.2 s during normal starting operation. The gas generator also demonstrated satisfactory performance during repeated pulse operation at a pulse duration of 3 s and 60 s under various output conditions.

Abstract Solar-driven photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) requires only sunlight, oxygen, and water, making it a green and sustainable alternative to conventional H2O2 production processes. We present photocatalytic carbon dots (CDs) as a new candidate for high-performance H2O2 production. Owing to the generation of an excellent charge carrier and the presence of various oxygen-containing functional groups, CDs showed an outstanding H2O2 production capability of 609.4 μmol g-1 h-1 even in the absence of an electron donor, demonstrating promising self-electron-donating capabilities. Hydroxyl groups on their surface, in particular, serve a dual role as photocatalytic active sites and as electron and proton donors toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The photocatalytic activity of CDs was significantly improved to 1187.8 μmol g-1 by functionalizing their surfaces with anthraquinone (AQ) as a co-catalyst; it promoted the charge carrier separation and electrochemically favors the two-electron pathway of ORR. These carbon-based metal-free nanohybrids that are a unique combination of CDs and AQ could offer insights into designing efficient photocatalysts for future solar-to-H2O2 conversion systems.

A double focusing magnetic spectrometer has been constructed for use with a field emission electron gun scanning microscope in order to study the electron energy loss mechanism in thin specimens. It is of the uniform field sector type with curved pole pieces. The shape of the pole pieces is determined by requiring that all particles be focused to a point at the image slit (point 1). The resultant shape gives perfect focusing in the median plane (Fig. 1) and first order focusing in the vertical plane (Fig. 2).

One of the most important requirements for a high-performance EM, especially an analytical EM using a fine beam probe, is to prevent specimen contamination by providing a clean high vacuum in the vicinity of the specimen. However, in almost all commercial EMs, the pressure in the vicinity of the specimen under observation is usually more than ten times higher than the pressure measured at the punping line. The EM column inevitably requires the use of greased Viton O-rings for fine movement, and specimens and films need to be exchanged frequently and several attachments may also be exchanged. For these reasons, a high speed pumping system, as well as a clean vacuum system, is now required. A newly developed electron microscope, the JEM-100CX features clean high vacuum in the vicinity of the specimen, realized by the use of a CASCADE type diffusion pump system which has been essentially improved over its predeces- sorD employed on the JEM-100C.
