AbstractDespite the widespread applications of 2-(hetero)aryl N-heteroarenes in numerous fields of science and technology, universal access to such compounds is hampered due to the lack of a general method for their synthesis. Herein, by a H2O-mediated H2-evolution cross-coupling strategy, we report an iridium(III)-catalyzed facile method to direct α-arylation of N-heteroarenes with both aryl and heteroaryl boronic acids, proceeding with broad substrate scope and excellent functional compatibility, oxidant and reductant-free conditions, operational simplicity, easy scalability, and no need for prefunctionalization of N-heteroarenes. This method is applicable for structural modification of biomedical molecules, and offers a practical route for direct access to 2-(hetero)aryl N-heteroarenes, a class of potential cyclometalated C^N ligands and N^N bidentate ligands that are difficult to prepare with the existing α-C-H arylation methods, thus filling an important gap in the capabilities of synthetic organic chemistry.

Abstract. SURFEX is a new externalized land and ocean surface platform that describes the surface fluxes and the evolution of four types of surface: nature, town, inland water and ocean. It can be run either coupled or in offline mode. It is mostly based on pre-existing, well validated scientific models. It can be used in offline mode (from point scale to global runs) or fully coupled with an atmospheric model. SURFEX is able to simulate fluxes of carbon dioxide, chemical species, continental aerosols, sea salt and snow particles. It also includes a data assimilation module. The main principles of the organization of the surface are described first. Then, a survey is made of the scientific module (including the coupling strategy). Finally the main applications of the code are summarized. The current applications are extremely diverse, ranging from surface monitoring and hydrology to numerical weather prediction and global climate simulations. The validation work undertaken shows that replacing the pre-existing surface models by SURFEX in these applications is usually associated with improved skill, as the numerous scientific developments contained in this community code are used to good advantage.

Multi-Physics CFD Simulation will be one of key technologies in various engineering fields. There are two strategies to simulate a multi-physics phenomenon. One is “Strong Coupling”, and the other is “Weak Coupling”. Each can be employed, based on time-scales of physics embedded in a problem. That is, when a time-scale of one physics is nearly same as that of the other physics, we have to use Strong Coupling to take into account the interaction between two physics. On the other hand, when one time-scale is quite different from the other one, Weak Coupling can be applied. Considering the present computer performance, Strong Coupling is difficult to be used in engineering design processes now. Therefore, we are focusing on Weak Coupling, and it has been applied to a number of multi-physics CFD simulations in engineering. We have successfully simulated sand erosion, ice accretion, particle deposition, electro-chemical machining and so on, with using Weak Coupling method. In the present study, the difference between strong and weak couplings is briefly described, and two examples of our multi-physics CFD simulations are expressed. The numerical results indicate that Weak Coupling strategy is promising in a lot of multi-physics CFD simulations.
