This paper investigates set-theoretical transitive and intransitive similarity relationships in triplets of verbs that can be deduced from raters’ similarity judgments on the pairs of verbs involved. We collected similarity judgments on pairs made up of 35 German verbs and found that the concept of transitivity adds to the information obtained from collecting pair-wise semantic similarity judgments. The concept of transitive similarity enables more complex relations to be revealed in triplets of verbs. To evaluate the outcomes that we obtained by analyzing transitive similarities we used two previously developed verb classifications of the same set of 35 verbs based on the analysis of large corpora (Richter & van Hout, 2016). We applied a modified form of weak stochastic transitivity (Block & Marschak, 1960; Luce & Suppes, 1965; Tversky, 1969) and found that (1), in contrast to Rips’ claim (2011), similarity relations in raters’ judgments systematically turn out to be transitive, and (2) transitivity discloses lexical and aspectual properties of verbs relevant in distinguishing verb classes.

Abstract In the current work, the optical properties of tin oxide thin films have been tailored via gamma irradiation for energy applications. The effect of Gamma radiation (50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 kGy) on the microstructural, absorption and oscillator parameters of SnO2 thin films has been investigated. XRD results reveal that the SnO2 films have the symmetry of the space group P42/mnm belonging to the tetragonal system. The crystallite size of γ-irradiated SnO2 thin film slightly increases as the irradiation dose increases. The allowed optical band gaps are estimated by applying various methods such as Tauc’s method, derivation of absorption spectrum fitting and absorption spectrum fitting approaches. The dispersion parameters are extracted from the dispersion curve of the real part of the refractive index. The single-effective-oscillator and Drude models for free charge carrier absorption are applied to obtain the dispersion parameters before and after γ-irradiation.

Abstract In this study, the dispersion and deposition of particles in the respiratory system attached to a mannequin lying down inside a room were investigated numerically. The respiratory system model was prepared by processing the CT scan images of a volunteer and was attached to a mannequin lying in the middle of a room. The flow field around the mannequin and effects of the thermal plume on the particle aspiration by the mannequin model was simulated using the Ansys-Fluent software. The aspiration efficiency of spherical particles in the airway was studied with the Lagrangian particle trajectory analysis, including the turbulence dispersion effects. For validation of numerical simulations, the aspiration efficiency of the particles obtained from the numerical solution was compared with the case of a standing mannequin. The results are presented for two different modes with upward and downward thermal plumes. For the first mode, due to the strong effect of the thermal plume in the upward direction, the aspiration efficiency of midrange particles increases. However, the aspiration efficiency of large micro-particles decreases for the first mode. For the second mode, with the downward thermal plume, the aspiration efficiency of small micro-particles increases significantly.

This paper presents the results of measurements of signal transmission loss at 2.5 GHz through 10 urban buildings. This allows the characterization of different types of buildings by effective attenuation constants and consideration of the contribution of the transmitted signal in microcell coverage predictions. Power delay profiles (PDPs) of the received signal were also measured and used to determine the time dispersion parameters of the channel, including the mean excess delay and the rms delay spread.

Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are a special class of optical fibers with a periodic arrangement of microstructured holes located in the fiber’s cladding. Light confinement is achieved by means of either index-guiding, or the photonic bandgap effect in a low-index core. Ever since PCFs were first demonstrated in 1995, their special characteristics, such as potentially high birefringence, very small or high nonlinearity, low propagation losses, and controllable dispersion parameters, have rendered them unique for many applications, such as sensors, high-power pulse transmission, and biomedical studies. When the holes of PCFs are filled with solids, liquids or gases, unprecedented opportunities for applications emerge. These include, but are not limited in, supercontinuum generation, propulsion of atoms through a hollow fiber core, fiber-loaded Bose–Einstein condensates, as well as enhanced sensing and measurement devices. For this reason, infiltrated PCF have been the focus of intensive research in recent years. In this review, the fundamentals and fabrication of PCF infiltrated with different materials are discussed. In addition, potential applications of infiltrated PCF sensors are reviewed, identifying the challenges and limitations to scale up and commercialize this novel technology.
