Several oximes, acetohydroxamic acid, and 3-nitropropionic acid were examined to determine if they could serve as substrates for heterotrophic nitrification by an Alcaligenes sp., previously isolated from soil and shown to actively nitrify pyruvic oxime. Neither acetohydroxamic acid, the aldoximes of acetaldehyde or butyraldehyde, or the alkyl oxime, acetone oxime, were used as nitrification substrates or as sole sources of carbon or nitrogen. α-Ketobutyric oxime, α-ketoglutaric oxime, and 3-nitropropionic acid, however, were nitrified and growth occurred when these compounds served as sole sources of carbon and nitrogen. Experiments with resting cells and cell-free extracts of the Alcaligenes sp. grown on α-ketobutyric oxime and α-ketoglutaric oxime indicate that these substrates are nitrified via an organic pathway as the rates of hydroxylamine (the nitrogen hydrolysis product) conversion are kinetically insufficient. 3-Nitropropionic acid metabolism by resting cells of the Alcaligenes sp. grown in 3-nitropropionic medium is restricted to nitrite production. The substrate specificities of the Alcaligenes sp. for heterotrophic nitrification and the relevance of the mineralization of 3-nitropropionic acid by the bacterium are discussed.

Abstract Norathyriol is an aglycone of a xanthonoid C-glycoside mangiferin that possesses different bioactive properties useful for humans compared to mangiferin. Mangiferin is more readily available in nature than norathyriol; thus, efficient mangiferin conversion into norathyriol is desirable. There are few reports regarding mangiferin C-deglycosylation because of the C-C bond resistance towards acid, alkaline, and enzyme hydrolysis. In this study, we isolated a mangiferin-deglycosylating bacterium strain KM7-1 from the mouse intestine. 16S rDNA sequencing indicated that KM7-1 belongs to the Bacillus genus. Compared to the taxonomically similar bacteria, the growth characteristic of facultative anaerobic and thermophilic resembled, yet only Bacillus sp. KM7-1 was able to convert mangiferin into norathyriol. Resting cells of Bacillus sp. KM7-1 obtained from aerobic cultivation at 50 °C showed high norathyriol formation from 1 mM of mangiferin. Norathyriol formation could be conducted either under aerobic or anaerobic conditions, and the reaction depended on time and bacterial amount.

Much recent attention has been focused on vegetative survival forms of planktonic diatoms and other algae. There are several reports of extended vegetative survival of the freshwater diatom Melosira in lake sediments. In contrast to those diatoms which form a morphologically distinct resistant spore, Melosira is known to produce physiological resting cells that are indistinguishable in outward morphology from actively growing cells.We used both light and electron microscopy to document and elucidate the sequence of cytological changes during the transition from resting cells to actively growing cells in a population of Melosira granulata from Douglas Lake, Michigan sediments collected in mid-July of 1983.

ООО «БИОТРОФ», Санкт-Петербург Аннотация: Приведены данные исследования методом газожидкостной хроматомасс-спектрометрии метаболитов, синтезируемых пробиотическими бактериями, входящими в состав кормовой добавки «Профорт®». Проведен опыт в условиях интенсивного промышленного птицеводства по применению кормовой добавки «Профорт®» (50 тыс. голов бройлеров в группе). Среди метаболитов пробиотических штаммов Enterococcus sp. и Bacillus sp. обнаружены такие полезные вещества, как молочная кислота, уксусная, пропионовая и другие короткоцепочечные (летучие) жирные кислоты, активные пептиды. Результаты зоотехнического опыта показали, что при скармливании бройлерам пробиотика «Профорт®» (500 г/т) живая масса при убое в 40 дней была выше контроля на 6,9%, конверсия корма улучшилась на 3,0%, а европейский индекс продуктивности бройлеров - на 5,69%. A study was undertaken to investigate to occurance of phosphate solubilizing bacteria from rhizosphere soil samples of medicine plants in Cibodas Botanical Garden. 13 soil samples of medicine plants are collected randomly The result shows that 71 isolates of phosphate solubilizing bacteria were isolated, and 10 species of these organism was identified as Azotobacter sp, Bacillus sp, Chromobacterium sp, C.violaceum, Citrobacter sp. , Enterobacter sp., E. liquefaciens. Nitrosomonas sp., Serratia rubidaea, Sphaerotillus natans. Azotobacter sp. And Bacillus sp. Are found in all of soil tested. Conversely, Serratia rubidaea is only in the sample from rhizosphere of Plantago mayor The activity of acid alkaline phosphatase in soil tested ranged from 0.78 – 60,18 ugp nitrophenole/g/h, with the higest values being recorded in soil sample from rhizosphere of “Lavender”.Keywords : phosphate solubilizing bacteria, soil enzyme phosphatase
