Silicon dioxide has been used in aquaculture to increase the abundance of diatoms; however, its relationship with water quality or productive performance has not been investigated. Our study evaluated the effect of diatomite on water quality, growth performance and proximate composition of Penaeus vannamei reared in seawater (E1) and brackish water (E2) with biofloc. Two independent experiments (E1 and E2), each one with three treatments with biofloc were evaluated: treatments D with a weekly addition of diatomite (10 g m-3); the treatments D plus a continuous inoculum of diatom Chaetoceros muelleri (DD); and only biofloc like control, for E1 was used post-larvae with an initial body weight (IBW) of 0.0075 g; while in E2 was used juvenile with an IBW of 1.42 g. After seven weeks in E1, non-significant differences were registered in survival, weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR) and feeding conversion rate (FCR) between DD treatment and control. However, in E2, the treatment D showed significantly higher WG (9.83 g) and SGR (4.25% d-1) compared to control (7.64 g and 3.86% d-1, respectively). Conversely, the FCR was lower in treatment D (1.16) compared to control (1.49). Non-significant differences were recorded in the proximate composition for shrimp, periphyton, and biofloc, among treatments in both experiments. Levels of nitrogenous wastes were similar among treatments. While in E2, the concentration of settleable solids was significantly higher in treatments with diatomite compared to control. Our results recommend the use of diatomite to improve the growth performance of shrimps cultured in brackish water with biofloc.

An online analytic service system was designed as a web and a mobile application for shrimp farmers and shrimp farm managers to manage the growth performance of shrimp. The MySQL database management system was used to manage the shrimp data. The Apache Web Server was used for contacting the shrimp database, and the web content displays were implemented with PHP script, JavaScript, and HTML5. Additionally, the program was linked with Google Charts to display data in various graphs, such as bar graphs and scatter diagrams, and Google Maps API was used to display water quality factors that are related to shrimp growth as spatial data. To test the system, field survey data from a shrimp farm in southern Thailand were used. Growth performance of shrimp and water quality data were collected from 13 earthen ponds in southern peninsular Thailand, located in the Surat Thani, Krabi, Phuket, and Satun provinces. The results show that the system allowed administrators to manage shrimp and farm data from the field sites. Both mobile and web applications were accessed by the users to manage the water quality factors and shrimp data. The system also provided the data analysis tool required to select a parameter from a list box and shows the association between water quality factors and shrimp data with a scatter diagram. Furthermore, the system generated a report of shrimp growth for the different farms with a line graph overlay on Google Maps™ in the data entry suite via mobile application. Online analytics for the growth performance of shrimp as provided by this system could be useful as decision support tools for effective shrimp farming.

This feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary black seed (Nigella sativa) supplementation on the growth performance, muscles proximate composition, antioxidant and histo-biochemical parameters of rohu (Labeo rohita). Fingerlings (8.503 ± 0.009 g) were fed on 0.0%, 1% and 2.5% black seed supplemented diets for 28 days. Fish sampling was done on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th day of experiment. The results of the present study indicated that black seed supplementation significantly increased growth performance and muscles protein contents of rohu over un-supplemented ones. Lipid peroxidation levels significantly decreased in all the studied tissues (liver, gills, kidney and brain) of black seed fed rohu, whereas the antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione) activities were increased in all the studied tissues of black seed supplemented rohu at each sampling day. The hepatic-nephric marker enzymes levels were decreased for black seed fed rohu. The present study showed that tested black seed levels are safe for rohu. Black seed is cheaply available in local markets of Pakistan; therefore, based on the results of the present study, it is suggested that black seed has potential to be used as natural growth promoter and antioxidant in the diet of rohu.
