This feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary black seed (Nigella sativa) supplementation on the growth performance, muscles proximate composition, antioxidant and histo-biochemical parameters of rohu (Labeo rohita). Fingerlings (8.503 ± 0.009 g) were fed on 0.0%, 1% and 2.5% black seed supplemented diets for 28 days. Fish sampling was done on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th day of experiment. The results of the present study indicated that black seed supplementation significantly increased growth performance and muscles protein contents of rohu over un-supplemented ones. Lipid peroxidation levels significantly decreased in all the studied tissues (liver, gills, kidney and brain) of black seed fed rohu, whereas the antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione) activities were increased in all the studied tissues of black seed supplemented rohu at each sampling day. The hepatic-nephric marker enzymes levels were decreased for black seed fed rohu. The present study showed that tested black seed levels are safe for rohu. Black seed is cheaply available in local markets of Pakistan; therefore, based on the results of the present study, it is suggested that black seed has potential to be used as natural growth promoter and antioxidant in the diet of rohu.

In the present study, a possible nature immunostimulant and growth promoter—humic substances (HS) originating from Siberian leonardite mineraloid—were tested on juvenile Clarias gariepinus performance. Feed additive was applied onto commercial pelleted feed at four HS levels—0, 1, 3, and 6% w/w (HS0, HS1, HS3, HS6, respectively). Diets were tested in five repetitions (in total, n = 1800 individuals, mean body weight 28.1 ± 6.2 g) for 56 days. Growth and production parameters, fish condition and somatic indices, and overall mortality were evaluated after 14, 28, 42, and 56 days of exposure. Whereas, plasma samples were collected only after 0, 28, and 56 days, when fish health status was assessed with biochemical parameters (total proteins, TP; alanine aminotransferase, ALT; aspartate aminotransferase, AST; lactate dehydrogenase, LDH; cholesterol, CHOL; triglycerides, TAG) and fish antioxidant status with glutathione (reduced glutathione, GSH; oxidized glutathione, GSSG; glutathione ratio GSH/GSSG). Although a significantly positive effect of HS feed additive on growth performance was not found in the present study, moderately positive effects were found regarding biochemical parameters (ALT, AST, LDH, CHOL, and TAG) and antioxidants (GSH/GSSG ratio) that were improved especially in the HS3 group.

Nigella sativa (Black seed) has been recognized as one of the most popular herbs in many parts of the world for centuries and used as folk medicine to cure different kinds of diseases. Vitamin E is well known for its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, and has been studied in the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The present study was performed to determine the effect of black seed oil and Vit-E on growth performance and blood biochemistry in mice. A total of 40 mice weight between 25-27 gm were used for conducting the research. At first, the mice were randomly divided into 4 groups consisting 10 mice in each group. Group A served as the control group whereas Group B was administered black seed oil @ 0.5 ml/kg/day, Groups C was taken vitamin E @ 200 mg/kg/day and Group D was received both black seed oil @ 0.5 ml/kg/day + vitamin E @ 200 mg/kg/day respectively for 42 days. Result showed that, body weight of B, C and D group revealed a significant decrease than the control group (p<0.05). Hemoglobin concentration (Hb) and Total Erythrocyte Count (TEC) showed a significant change in B, C and D group than the control group (p<0.05). On the other hand, Total Leukocyte Count (TLC) and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) were insignificant. The results of biochemical test explored that serum cholesterol and triglyceride value decreased significantly whereas HDL increased significantly in black seed oil, Vit-E treated groups than the control group (p<0.05). But the LDL showed no change after treatment. It could be concluded that the black seed oil and Vit-E can be used in the therapeutic strategy of obesity, anemia and coronary diseases. Asian J. Med. <p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> In modern era, treatment methods become diversified and developed day by day and organic medicine is one of the modern technology which also introduced in our poultry sector.<strong> </strong>This experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Thankuni (<em>Centella asiatica)</em> and Kalo Jeera (<em>Nigella sativa</em>) powdered supplementation as a growth promoter in broiler chickens.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> A total of 20 day-old Cobb 500 broiler chicks were randomly divided into two groups, A and B after seven days of acclimatization. The group A was kept as control and fed on only normal balanced diet. The group B was treatment group fed on normal diet with additional supplementation of Thankuni and Kalo Jeera powder in water. For observation of growth rate, live body weight was taken at first day and every seven days interval up to 5<sup>th</sup> weeks. Besides it hematological tests were performed at 35<sup>th</sup> days for searching hematological changes in both groups.  </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> The initial body weight of groups A and Bon 1<sup>st</sup> day of this experiment were 43.00 ± 0.56 gm and 42.50 ± 0.35 gm, respectively and after 35<sup>th</sup> day of experiment final body weight were 1450 ± 57.35 gm and 1700 ± 58.56 gm (p&lt;1%) respectively. The growth rate of treatment group B was 17.24% more (p&lt;1%) than that of control birds. Although the dressing percentage of both group was equal but relative weight of heart, liver, spleen and pancreas were significantly higher (p&lt;0.1) in treatment group indicates better flock health. Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) were 1.88 in treated birds and 2.28 in control birds was the sign of economy rate of production and were analyzed and found that net profit per broiler was Tk. 10.50 (0.12 USD) and Tk. 33.00 (0.4 USD), respectively. General blood parameters of treatment group were non-significantly higher than control group.  </p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> The results suggest that better growth performance were achieved in broilers supplemented with Thankuni leaf and Kalo Jeera. Both of these two herbal medicines have antimicrobial, immunostimulatory, anti-stress, fungi static, insecticidal and liver tonic properties so that there were no mortality rate. Now it can be said that uses of Thankuni and Kalo Jeera has beneficiary effects in broiler production.

Abstract A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Piper nigrum (black pepper) leaf extract on on the growth performance, proximate composition, hematological parameters, and immune response of Labeo rohita fingerlings with an average weight of 22.14 ± 0.98g. Aftrer acclimation for two weeks, fish (n=25) were randomly selected and placed in four glass aquaria (T0, T1, T2 and T3) at constant water temperature (30.0 ± 1.0 °C), pH (7.50 ± 0.5) and total hardness (200 ± 2.0 mgL,-1) for a period of 12 weeks, with three replicates each. Fish were fed with P. nigrum leaf extract supplemented feed @ 0.0%, 1.0%, 2.0% and 3.0% in T0, T1,T2 and T3, respectively. At the end of experiment, five fish were randomly selected from each aquaria for proximate composition, gut and skin microbial load, hematological parameters. Total proteins, albumins, and globulins were also recorded to evaluate immunological memory. The result revealed that fish in T2 showed better growth performance with an average weight gain of 56.11 ± 0.51 g. Thus, it had been concluded that Piper nigrum, a medicinal plant, can also be used to enhance the growth performance and immune response of Labeo rohita as attractive alternatives against antibiotics and vaccines and has shown no negative side effects on fish health as well as on its environment.
