In the context of climate change, the input of acid substances into rivers, caused by human activities in the process of industrial and agricultural development, has significantly disrupted river systems and has had a profound impact on the carbon cycle. The hydrochemical composition and which main sources of the Lianjiang River (LR), a subtropical karst river in northern Guangdong Province, South China, were analyzed in January 2018. The objective was to explicate the influence on the deficit proportion of CO2 consumption, resulting from carbonate chemical weathering (CCW), driven by nitric acid (HNO3) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4), which is affected by exogenous acids from the industrial regions in north of the Nanling Mountains and the Pearl River Delta. The response of the riverine carbonate system to exogenous acid-related weathering was also discussed. HCO3− and Ca2+, respectively, accounted for 84.97% of the total anions and 78.71% of the total cations in the surface runoff of the LR, which was characterized as typical karst water. CCW was the most important material source of river dissolved loads in the LR, followed by human activities and silicate chemical weathering (SCW). Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), derived from CCW induced by carbonic acid (H2CO3), had the largest contribution to the total amount of DIC in the LR (76.79%), and those from CCW induced by anthropogenic acids (HNO3 and H2SO4) and SCW contributed 13.56% and 9.64% to the total DIC, respectively. The deficit proportion of CO2 consumption associated with CCW resulting from sulfuric acid and nitric acid (13.56%), was slightly lower than that of the Guizhou Plateau in rainy and pre-rainy seasons (15.67% and 14.17%, respectively). The deficit percentage of CO2 uptake associated with CCW induced by sulfuric acid and nitric acid, accounted for 38.44% of the total CO2 consumption related to natural CCW and 18.84% of the anthropogenic acids from external areas. DIC derived from CCW induced by human activities, had a significant positive correlation with the total alkalinity, SIc and pCO2 in river water, indicating that the carbonate system of the LR was also driven by exogenous acids, with the exception of carbonic acid. More attention should be paid to the effects of human activities on the chemical weathering and riverine carbonate system in the karst drainage basin.

The Impact

Accurate and quantitative assessment of the impact of natural environmental changes and human activities on total suspended solids (TSS) concentration is one of the important components of water environment protection. Due to the limits of traditional cross-sectional point monitoring, a novel water quality evaluation method based on the Markov model and remote sensing retrieval is proposed to realize the innovation of large-scale spatial monitoring across administrative boundaries. Additionally, to explore the spatiotemporal characteristics and driving factors of TSS, a new three-band remote sensing model of TSS was built by regression analysis for the inland reservoir using the synchronous field spectral data, water quality samples and remote sensing data in the trans-provincial Hedi Reservoir in the Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces of South China. The results show that: (1) The three-band model based on the OLI sensor explained about 82% of the TSS concentration variation (R2=0.81, N=34,  p value<0.01) with an acceptable validation accuracy (RMSE=6.24 mg/L,MRE=18.02%, N=15), which is basically the first model of its kind available in South China. (2) The TSS concentration has spatial distribution characteristics of high upstream and low downstream, where the average TSS at 31.54 mg/L in the upstream are 2.5 times those of the downstream (12.55 mg/L). (3) Different seasons and rainfall are important factors affecting the TSS in the upstream cross-border area, the TSS in the dry season are higher with average TSS of 33.66 mg/L and TSS are negatively correlated with rainfall from upstream mankind activity. Generally, TSS are higher in rainy seasons than those in dry seasons. However, the result shows that TSS are negatively correlated with rainfall, which means human activities have higher impacts on water quality than climate change. (4) The Markov dynamic evaluation results show that the water quality improvement in the upstream Shijiao Town is the most obvious, especially in 2018, the improvement in the water quality level crossed three levels and the TSS were the lowest. This study provided a technical method for remote sensing dynamic monitoring of water quality in a large reservoir, which is of great significance for remediation of the water environment and the effective evaluation of the river and lake chief system in China.

Nitrate (NO3−) dual isotope analysis was performed in Zhanjiang Bay, which is a closed bay with intensive human activities in South China, to investigate seasonal changes in the main NO3− sources and their biogeochemical processes in the monsoon-controlled climate. The relatively low N/P ratios in Zhanjiang Bay suggests that nitrogen (N) is a limiting nutrient, which indicates that the increase of N is favorable for phytoplankton proliferation. However, a sufficient amount of ammonium was found in our study area owing to intensive human activities, which can support biological processes. Thus, less NO3− biological processes were found, indicating that NO3− isotopic characteristics may reveal details of the mixing from various sources. The Bayesian mixing model showed that NO3− in the upper bay originated from manure (43%), soil N (30%), N fertilizer (17%), and N precipitation (10%) during winter, which reflects the local human activities; while NO3- sources during summer were mainly N fertilizer (36%), soil N (32%), and manure (31%), indicating the source as the runoff from the upper river basin. Our results suggest that nitrate dual-isotope was very useful for tracing the main NO3− sources in the condition of the sufficient ammonium, and runoff exerted an important impact on the shift in NO3− sources between both the local source and the source from the upper river basin during the two seasons in this monsoon-controlled bay.

Abstract Background: Coral reef ecosystems cannot operate normally without an effective nitrogen cycle. For oligotrophic coral reef areas, coral-associated diazotrophs are indispensable participants in the nitrogen cycle. How coral-associated diazotrophs will change in order to adapt to environmental changes resulting from global warming and human activities is a topic of concern for researchers. To this end, 68 colonies of scleractinian coral were collected from 6 coral reefs areas with different environmental variables in the South China Sea to investigate the composition of associated diazotrophs based on nifH gene amplification using high-throughput sequencing. The six coral reefs can be clearly divided into two types (fringing reefs and island reefs), are affected by varying degrees of human activities and are located at different latitudes from 9°20′06′′N to 22°34′55′′N with different seawater temperatures. Results: Alpha- and beta-diversity analyses showed that the distribution of diazotrophs among coral reefs exhibited greater geographical fluctuations than interspecific fluctuations. The predominant bacterial phyla included Proteobacteria, Chlorobi, Cyanobacteria, and two unclassified phyla. Chlorobi exhibited an abundance of 47–96% in coral samples from the high-latitude Daya Bay fringing reef affected by eutrophication. Unclassified bacteria II, with an abundance of 28–87%, was found in all coral samples from the midlatitude Luhuitou fringing reef affected by eutrophication. However, unclassified bacteria I and Proteobacteria dominated (> 80% abundance) in most of the coral samples from the Weizhou Island fringing reef, which is far from land, and three island reefs (Huangyan Island, Xinyi Reef, and Sanjiao Reef) at relatively low latitudes. At the genus level, some core diazotrophs were found in different coral sample groups. In addition, the correlation analysis with various environmental variables revealed that the variables correlated positively or negatively with different diazotrophic genera. Conclusions: We found that coral-associated diazotrophs were common among coral individuals. The presence of these diazotrophs was not affected by the external environment, but their population abundances were closely related to the different environmental variables. These results provide insights into the ecological characteristics of coral-associated diazotrophs and their relationships with critical environmental variables in the South China Sea.
