Abstract Amdal regulation on mining exploitation according to Law No. 32 of 2009 aims to protect and manage the environment properly. This research reveals the paradox of EIA at the micro level (a case study) supporting the neoliberal agenda and facilitating economic development. This study aimed to explore how the practice of compensation for agricultural land at the scoping stage in the preparation of mining Amdal documents. The research was conducted in Mulawarman village, Kutai Kartanagara district, East Kalimantan province in the period 2004-2013. Historically, in the 2004-2013 period, Kutai Kartanegara Regency was the most massive in issuing mining business permits in Indonesia. The results of the study indicate that there was weak legal protection for agricultural land owners and unequal negotiation practices between companies and land owners without government supervision. The practice of compensation is a development tool rather than an environmental protection tool..

Abstract. Sudrajat, Putro MD. 2019. The contribution of forest remnants within industrial area to endemic and threatened mammal conservation: A case study in liquefied natural gas industry in Bontang, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2257-2265. Tropical forests harbor high biodiversity, while natural protected area is one of the approaches for biodiversity conservation. However, the conversion of natural forests for various purposes has caused forest fragmentation. A novel strategy of conservation is proposed in the form of protected area within industrial estate as the contribution of industrial company in biodiversity conservation. The purpose of this study is to document the endemic and threatened species of mammals existing at two forest fragments with extent of 15 ha and 7.4 ha in a natural gas refinery industry area in Bontang, East Kalimantan and their potential as biodiversity conservation areas. Mammals were monitored at the two forest fragments through direct surveys, trace identification, mist nets, and camera traps. The results of the study show that according to IUCN Red List there were 23 mammal species (belonging to 18 genera, 15 families and six orders) of conservation concern found within the forest fragments including one species is under Critically Endangered, two are Endangered, four are Vulnerable, ten are Least Concern, one is Near Threatened and three are Not Evaluated. Four of those species are considered as endemic, namely Bornean orangutan, Pongo pygmaeus morio, Müller’s gibbon, Hylobates muelleri, Proboscis monkey, Nasalis larvatus and East Bornean slow loris, Nycticebus menagensis. These findings suggest that forest fragments located in the environment of industrial estate can be considered as important conservation strategy if they are well preserved and maintained.

Tasawuf or also called by Sufism is an integral part of Islamic religious knowledge which is particularly served in traditional even in modern conditions nowadays. A case study was done in this research in order to capture all of natural phenomenon happened in six different Islamic boarding schools in East Kalimantan particularly in Sabilarrasyad, Darul Ihsan, and An-Nur Islamic boarding schools in Samarinda, Muhammad Arsyad Al Banjari Islamic boarding school in Balikpapan, and Darul Quran wa Tarbiyah and Al Hidayah Islamic boarding schools in Kutai Kartanegara. Specifically, direct observation, semi-structured interview, as well as document study were applied in this research in order to figure out the implementation of teaching and learning of Tasawuf particularly in terms of curriculum applied, materials and media used, methods and evaluation utilized at above Islamic boarding schools. As the result, the essentials of teaching and learning of Tasawuf is directed through hidden curriculum particularly inserted in Akhlak materials taught by the teachers or what so called by Asatidz and Asatidzah at all Islamic boarding schools investigated in this research. Additionally, traditional patterns of Islamic teaching and learning of Akhlak materials are applied i.e. Bandungan, Sorogan, and Wetonan as well as conventional learning steps including Tarjamah, Pendhabitan Harakat, Imlak, Mutholaah, and Memorizing methods. Small difference in terms of media used among those Islamic boarding schools does not lead to significant highlighted aspect since all of the Kitab used is contained about Akhlak or particularly regarding with how to build positive characters, behavior, and attitude of the students. Finally, future implication is also served and discussed in this research.

This paper describes the development and successful implementation of a system designed to detect coal deposits remaining in coal train wagons after unloading (dumping). These undesirable coal deposits constitute both small residual amounts of “carryback”, but also larger “hang-ups” of significant volume that have failed to discharge. The system was originally developed simply to detect and record volumes of carryback, as part of an effort to characterise the extent of the problem for the coal transport industry, but was then enhanced to provide real-time feedback of large hang-ups so that they could be discharged prior to the wagons exiting the dump station. The paper describes the hardware and processing systems used in the system, including the different strategies employed to ensure a reliable detection system. The system has now been installed and operated in a production environment at three dump stations across two different coal terminals, and a case study of the results from one of these dump stations is presented. Automating remnant coal detection at dump stations provides short interval control to minimise potential hazards and downtime, and historical data that may be integrated into existing data platforms and analysed for productivity, environmental, and safety planning insights.

In accordance with the formal regulations currently in force in Poland, the criteria for rockburst hazard assessment with respect to coal deposits include the records of seismic events and their impacts, de-stressing of the entire seam or its parts and expert opinions of mine operation engineers. Effectiveness of the de-stressing can be verified by geophysical test data whilst the expert opinions are mostly based on mathematical modelling using specialist software or dedicated simulation algorithms. This study collates and synthesises the results of tests carried out in a seam section in a colliery within the Upper Silesia Coal Basin, obtained by the outlined methods. Geophysical survey results are interpreted basing on seismic tomography procedures utilising the geo-tomography techniques for velocity field reconstruction in data processing. For comparison, the stress state modelling data are provided, based on conventional engineering solutions applicable to mechanics of deformable media. The actual assessment of the rockburst threat level is based on observations of distributions of the longitudinal wave velocity in relation to the actual value of the vertical component of stress concentration within the coal seam.
